10000 hours

…is often given as the amount of time needed to become an expert at something (based on some rather ropey research but nevertheless…) and has been mentioned at least a couple of times during this Olympics. And here:

To complete 10000 hours you’d need to commit 4 hours a day for 8 years (roughly)

Aside from the obvious (drinking, wanking, trolling) has anybody spent the required 10000 hours on something and become an expert at it? Or close to it? If so, to what standard?

If not, given current age and ability what would you choose to spend your 10000 hours on if you were to become an expert?

I’ll go with procrastinating while I have a think about what I would do with my 10000 hours.

Only the obvious you mention…

I reached the dizzy heights of an online top 20 ranking on Topspin 2 (Xbox 360) back in the day.

I’ve wasted all my time drinking, wanking and trolling.

I’ve spent a lot of money and time on women and fast cars - and I wasted the rest.

Thats about the amount of time I commit to my job per day so yes I can qualify as an expert on what I have no idea but an expert yes thats me.

I have definitely done more than 10,000 hours typing.

One of my favourite tricks to pull on the rare occasions I’m onsite is continuing to type, while maintaining eye contact with someone that is asking me a question.

I’m something of an expert on that.
