Who Are Westerly, Malan & Roland-Jones?
Jennings gets another duck
England 23-1 off 8 overs
It has been obvious in the first two Tests that Jennings simply isn’t good enough to open the batting in Test cricket, three ducks already in only nine innings. His basic technique is awful, as evidenced by this morning’s dismissal. No footwork, just hanging his bat out, a walking wicket. It is difficult to understand why he keeps being picked, he clearly wasn’t considered good enough to play for South Africa where he was born, grew up and learned his cricket. Captain of South Africa under 19s, he didn’t come to England until he was 20, qualified under the four year residency rule, then fast tracked into the England test side. He clearly has the right connections.
Fifty up for England
51-1 off 20 overs
Well they came off at 62-1 after 22 overs for rain and then went straight back on again ?
Now they are back off and lunch is called.
Ah.
The old settled side trick eh?
Close of play
England 171 -4 from 59 overs
Jennings got a duck
Westly made 25
Malan made 1
Root made 29
Cook 82 not out
Stokes 21 not out
Day 2 is underway 6 overs in
Cook goes for 88
England 190 - 5 off 66 overs
Currently 218/5 from 71 overs. New ball due pretty soon. Interesting comment from the great Michael Holding, that as a bowling side you’d be disappointed to concede 300 runs on this pitch. Could be a low-scoring game then.
Thats Stokes 50
England 234 -5 off 73.3 overs
So that’s 353 all out. If Michael Holding is to be believed that’s a pretty decent score. But, as Sir Geoffrey always likes to point out, you don’t know how a pitch is playing until both sets of batters and bowlers have had a go on it. Bring on the SA batsmen and our bowlers!
South Africa 27- 2 after 12 overs
Elgar and Kuhn back in the clubhouse
Amla goes for 6
SA 30 for 3 off 13 overs
Roland-Jones with all three wickets so far.
TRJ must be on something…he is on fire
4 wickets down 47 runs
SA now 47/4 as Toblerone has snaffled de Kock (I enjoyed typing that) to go with his other three! England’s total looking better by the minute here.
And it’s 47/5 as Anderson gets Faf du Plessis. Bloody hell.
