Allardyce for England

Roy to Sam? Very progressive. Is there an international equivalent of Newcastle who can not beat the equivalent of Villa just when it matters so that we scrape through?

I know a faith healer who’s not doing much at the moment…

But it could revive the international careers of any player who can kick a ball a long way + Andy Carroll and Jermaine Defoe.

Personally it sounds like an idea from 1975, but can things get much worse?

And it cheers me up just to imagine how pissed off Harry Redknapp would be when he realises that fate and timing have squatted down together and shat on his cornflakes.

Big Sam - never relegated from the Prem, and actually relegated two teams on the same night:-

Harry…

I love it that Big Sam’s main qualification for the top job in English football is that he hasnt been relegated. Really useful CV addition that!

Apparantly he hasnt returned to Sunderland’s training camp as expected. Read into that as you will.

Thing is, it’s like being a hairdresser. Most people need to get their hair cut on a regular basis, so you know you’ll always have work.

Same thing with relegations. Every year we get teams in danger of them. You get the occasional club that take the long term view. Burnley and Dyche are a good example. Most of the time though, panic buttons are pressed.

Who you going to call?

Ghostbusters?

Fuck that. Call Fat Sam. I’d love to know what sort of bonuses he gets for keeping teams up.

But is keeping a team up a telling sign that you can win a World Cup? What has Fat Sam actually won? It sounds more like damage limitation than ambition.

He plays percentages. Greece won the Euros doing that.

I do suspect that he’d be completely fucked in the MLS, where there is no relegation.

Like a cat being asked to do a dog’s job.

And Portugal have just won the Euros in pretty similar style - well organised, hard to beat, every player knowing their role and sticking to it. Classic Big Fat Sam attributes.

I think a key argument in favour of Allardyce is that he has a good record of improving teams, and you can hardly argue that England don’t need improving. His style of play tends to be effective rather than beautiful, but he’s not really the long-ball dinosaur that he’s often portrayed as. He plays a direct style, getting the ball out wide and forward quickly, but it’s not just a question of hoofing it up to a big man up front. And let’s face it, seeing a well-organised England team would be a bit of a novelty.

All that said, I’d hate to see him managing Saints (and yes, I know it’s not going to happen. Ever). Do I want to see him managing England? Hmm… Not sure just how much I actually care.

Wouldn’t be too keen if BFS was going to be Saints manager, but I thought he was keen on promoting Sports science? Or are you taking the piss out of this? Think we could get worse for England. But I was quite a believer in Clive Woodward.

He has used “sports science” for some time and is less of a dinosaur in that respect than someone like Redknapp. But if you are talking about the beautiful game and wanting your team to play attractive football, I dont think that BFS is your man. I think there is a place for people like Clive Woodward in the game, especially for our international team who clearly have issues when it comes to tarnsferring their club form to international matches. If you can squeeze an extra 5% out of your team and get them playing as a unit, you have got a chance. All too often we look like a bunch of individuals who have only met each other 5 minutes before the game. BFS could get us to perform like Portugal, but is that what we want? It seems to me that we want to win, but we want to win with style and class.

On the bbc site it asks ‘What would England look like under Allardyce?’ BIG. I would imagine.

I would be like, right, England has no International payers. Hart, ur not International. Rooney, ur not international. Milner, Henderson, Sterling, Sturridge, Wilshere, Walker, Cahill, Smalling… you can all fk off. I would start again with a midfield of James Ward-Prowse, and no-one up front.

False 9 bear? Better than the usual fraud 11 I spose.
