Esther Planas Balduz, 55, an artist who attended the protest after hearing about it on Facebook, said she supported the cause because she was evicted from her home of seven years when her rent doubled last year.
āIāve lived in Shoreditch for 17 years and itās appalling whatās been going on. Its our fault, artists like me go to these kind of areas, then the architects follow, the developers, the hipsters etc,ā Balduz said. āThe problem is social cleansing. There are no protections for us. The law does not protect us, only the greedy landowners.ā
Balduz said the protest seemed āmore like a punk carnivalā and hoped it would open up debate on the issue of gentrification. ā Even if a few became a bit aggressive, it was really less aggressive than the masses of drunks I have to cope with every weekend in the area ,ā she said.
Another protester, who declined to be named, conceded that there were āmore justifiable targetsā than a small independent business, but played down the scale of the attack.
So thatās a slightly less sensationalist take, but probably wonāt tick as many right wing boxes. I disagree with the violence, as I do at any other demonstration. I also disagree with the way that the media only ever focuses on the violence. Iāve been to loads of protests and have never seen any with my own eyes. Thatās all I see on the news reports afterwards. Itās such a myopically presented view that when suggesting that I take Juvenile Unit #1 to a demo, I had a 30 minute interrogation from ms pap about safety.

So an artist whose colonisation of the area contributed to the gentrification in the first place goes on a sanctimonious rampage at a perceived consequence of her own actions. Admitting her part in it makes it even more bizarre.

My experience of āhipstersā is that they are generally a pretty placid bunch, kids doing daft things to be different or stand out or whatever. When I go out in a so called āhipsterā area, I never feel threatened, or intimidated (at least, not by the hipsters). But theyāre easy to mock, easy to pick on, and now it seems, easy to blame.
Shoreditch has got ridiculously expensive because the bankers have bought it out, not because of hipsters. People who get drunk on Brick Lane arenāt hipsters.
Reality is, most of you wouldnāt be able to tell the difference between an artist and a hipster.
And thatās the trouble when you lump people together in a group, and you follow group mentality. People arenāt individuals anymore. Theyāre just hipsters, and hipsters have ruined it for me.

Lots of people pay 700 odd quid a year, to watch a bunch of kids kick a ball round a pitch. Many people consider that pretty dumb. Each to their own, I say. If itās not harming anyone, who are you to judge.

I donāt actually eat cereal. But if they also served tea, and happily hang out in their cafe because Iām sure it would be a relaxed friendly place.
