Bands I Wish I Had Seen

I was pretty lucky, looking back. Managed to see Led Zeppelin (not a big fan now though), The Who at the Valley, Dr Feelgood, Dylan at Earls Court, and then again at Hammersmith, The Ramones, The Jam, The Clash quite a few times, load of Two-Tone bands (The Specials, Madness, Dexys Mignight Runners and The Selecter on the same bill - hah!), and quite a few old legends no longer with us - Muddy Waters, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield…

But the one I really regret not seeing was Bob Marley. Bit too young for the Lyceum in 1975, but could have made the ‘Rastaman Vibration’ or ‘Exodus’ tours. I probably thought I’d get around to seeing him sometime but by 1981 he was gone

Not one for the Punk Era kids but I was sorry to miss Steely Dan. A lot of the Punks I used to know at work have tempered their opinions on them in recent years. They were supposedly the antithesis of Punk but they were simply a great Rock band.

My girlfiend and I had tickets to see them at the Top Rank in Southampton around 1974 IIRC…we were walking up and everyone else were going in the opposite direction…“Forget it Donald Fagan’s got a bad throat…gig’s cancelled”

King Crimson (any incarnation) and Gong (original incarnation)

There are also a few gigs that I wish my brain had gone to while my body was there.

I do, however regret seeing Tangerine Dream at Salisbury cathedral. It was nice to take a well earned nap though.

Saw them on a couple of occasions…one “Lizard” era at the Old Refectory, Southampton Uni (cracking gig) and also McDonald & Giles at an open air gig in the Uni grounds.

With you on that one. I was playing cricket at Havant that day and got the driver to get us back at breakneck speed only to be told it was off.

Wasn’t it at The Guildhall though? Definately 1974.

It was “Top Rank”…I remember because it was very unusual…Doobies at the Guildhall around the same time. The only other rock band I saw at “Top Rank” was Focus…not sure of the date on that one.

Justin Harris in Hi Watts…hear they were a top band in Southampton.

Beatles, Queen, Oasis and White Stripes.

Oh and Johnny Cash.

I should have added REM to my list. At their peak they were awesome.

I left The Beatles off purely because of all the screaming girlies. I went to see T.Rex at the point they stopped being a hippy duo and turned into and electric teenybopper combo. Ride A White Swan and Get It On had turned them into a big act and I was swamped with screaming prepubescent girls. Rolf Harris would have loved it!

Hendrix

Johnny Cash

The Clash

Sonic Youth

Fugazi

The Slits

Velvet Underground

I was fortunate enough to see Arthur Lee with a backing band back in the early 2000’s, but would have loved to have seen the original Love lineup as well.

Just Nirvana and Bob Marley for me.

I wish’d I’d seen more Slits growing up, too Won Ton.

Much discussion on Arthur Lee and Love in the Cover us in Glory thread. You’re amongst friends.

+1 for Cash and the Clash too.

Have seen Morrisey a few times, but yes that’s another great shout, Goatster.

Saw them at Poole Arts Centre, on the “Meat is Murder” tour in 1985. Finished with the title track and left the stage to the deafening sound of the abbatoir.

A new band called James supported them and I have seen them over 20 times since.

Was lucky enough to see Queen at Knebworth on the Live Magic Tour in '86.

Would loved to have seen Deep Purple live back in the day (wouldn’t go to see them now if you paid me).

Have always wanted to see Bowie live, but fear I may have missed the boat on seeing a worthwhile gig. Glass Spider TOur would’ve been great.

Have seen The Who, but would’ve loved to have seen them while Moon was still alive. Same goes for AC/DC, Bon Scott, yes - Brian Johnson, no thank you.

Remembered another one that I was too young for - Roxy Music, circa 1972, with Eno.

I saw The Who with Moon and without but they really should pack it in now. Without Entwhistle and Moon thet just arent The Who anymore. Saw Deep Purple in 1972 and the were awesome. Saw them again after Ritchie Blackmore had left and Tommy Bolin was on guitar and they were awful. Didnt think much of Black Sabbath live but there was a band called The Groundhogs that never made it big but were really good. Wasnt a great Zeppelin fan but saw that at Earls Court around 1974 and they were impressive live. Same with Bowie. Liked some of his stuff but wasnt fussed about seeing him. Was working at Glastobury in 2000 I think when he was headlining and he was really good. I have been lucky enough to see most of the bands/artists I like and have rarely been disappointed. Re King Crimson, I saw Greg Lake on tour a few years back in Tunbridge Wells. The place was less than half full but he put on a great show and included some tracks from In The Court of the Crimson King which were out of this world. Interested to hear that KC are touring again and will try and get to see them. Three drummers nowdays apparently.

I saw The Groundhogs about 20-25 years ago at the Tower Arts Centre in Winchester after a friend of mine introduced me to their music. T.S.McPhee was excellent.

Have seen Black Sabbath live several times and different incarnations of the band, but never with Ozzy. Ronnie Dio was my favourite Sabbath singer but there was a great line-up that had Neil Murray (Whitesnake) and Cozy Powell (Rainbow) and a great vocalist called Tony Martin.
