Berlin Attack

Lorry driven into Christmas market in Berlin . At least 9 dead. Believed to be deliberate attack.

12 dead, 48 injured.

:lou_sad: Berlin is my favourite European city. They have Bears on every street corner srs.

I see Trump wasn’t reactionary in his response to the attack last night at all.

I fear for the world at the moment.

My neice was in that very same market last week and one of my daugheters has gone out there today. So much for peace on earth and goodwill to all men.

I see mad Merkel is in mourning. For her job.

She must be regretting her actions or lack of them now.

The worst bit is that there is no answer.

If a loner wants to commit murder there is little you can do to halt it.

And let’s not pretend that there is massive support for this extremism.

Unlike 9/11, I see no structure or organisation, it’s a tiny minority of small cells who are trying to create division through random acts of violence.

That is the major issue. We now have a number of nutjobs scattered through our communities who are acting on their own. There is no way to defend society against these lone wolves. We live in a fucked up world, but in truth it was ever thus.

I’m not buying this ‘the world is fucked’ stuff. Bad times, f’sure, but there are maybe a few thousand mentalists (among 7 billion) who would carry out mad shit like this. That’s worse odds than winning the lottery.

Have you read Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels of our Nature, TCK? It’s quite a revealing and reassuring study into how much less violent the world is becoming.

It’ll be no consolation to those afected by this attack, and I don’t want to sound disrespectful to them. But the aim of terrorism is to make people live in fear. And the widespread reporting of it inadvertantly helps to spread that fear. But the balance of the odds seems to suggest that fear is unnecessary.

My point is that in 2016 we are still no nearer living in a peaceful world than we ever were.

Police hunt Tunisian man over Berlin market attack after identity document found in truck, German media reports http://bbc.in/2i9D4jf

Maybe I’m missing the point here, but if you’re a jihadist and expect to die why would you take identity documents with you?

NVM I think I’ve worked out the answer!!

Stolen van keys - check

Petty cash for breakfast - check

Bottle of Evian to keep hydrated - check

Driving licence - whoops, nearly forgot that! Imagine if I got pulled over, that would be embarrassing…

It’s very strange that they released the Pakistani bloke so quickly and now have a new suspect, who just so happened to leave his ID behind. The Pakistani bloke was arrested after being followed by a witness having left the lorry. So how do you end up following the wrong bloke if you’ve tracked him leaving the cab? And how could the Tunisian leave the lorry without being spotted? I’m finding the whole thing a bid odd. I’m going full Pap/Jack Schitt conspiracy theory mental.

Total and utter security failure.

Shot dead? Blimey. If I were to be into conspiracy theories, I’d really start developing one now. Really convenient result.
