Sorry Stephen... I wa sbeing given a bit of grief from Mrs Abandon of spending too much time on the internet ... but needless to say, my knowledge of local Kebab procurement is limited to Central Fife

Is this a trick question, sir?   There is no best place to buy a doner kebab.  All purchases involve moments of complete misjudgement. normally drunken, but sometimes borne from tragic life circumstances, such as being raised on Pop Tarts.

I'm easily influenced.   Once again, Jack Dee is to blame. 1m20 onwards.

Assuming this was a serious request, I did some follow up with a city-based conneisseur.

Apparently, Lounge in Woolston is good.

Southampton Kebab & Chicken is apparently a good "proper Southampton" place.

I love that "proper Southampton" was qualified there.  Dirty, over the river buggers * lou_lol

* I jest, I jest.

The only places I know of where you can get a good doner kebab are in London (Dalston area mostly) and they're all Turkish run. You get meat that is recognisably lamb and not some horrible rendered paste stuff. Also, they serve it in fab bread, not the usual taste-free pitta.

Mangal Ocakbasi is one of the best - fuck all use my telling you this if you're looking in Southampton, mind. lou_lol

Best imho used to be Marmaris on St Denys Road but that has changed hands now.

Bitterne Grill is pretty good.

I honestly didn't know such things existed.   Will have to give them a go the next time I've got free time in the capital.   I'm not going to pretend I've never eaten donner meat.  We all have, probably.   I've just never felt good about it in the morning.

No worries. I lived in Stoke Newington for about fifteen years, so I knew the local Turkish places pretty well. The original Mangal is on Arcola Street, a side street off Stoke Newington Road; there's also the larger (and licensed) Mangal II, which is on Stoke Newington Road a bit closer to Dalston (just up from the Rio, on the other side of the road). If you eat at the Mangal II you stand a very good chance of seeing Gilbert and George, as they eat there every evening. Yes, every evening.

I second this recommendation. Mangal 2 is my fav, but probably only because it's the first I found.

And they do takeaway!

Unlike other kebab emporiums which presumably nail your feet to the floor of their establishment until you have consumed your meal(s).

Pap, I think you should promote this site for recommendations about anything Southampton related. Buy some google adwords 'Best Southampton recommendations' 'We know the best kebab shops, pubs, hardware stores this side of the M27' then you could really set this place up! Stick a bit of advertising on, and make your fortune!

The borderline communists would hang me out to dry if I did that.

Besides, Goaters has a theory that sensitivity to advertisers might be one of the reasons Steveweb has a swear filter.  Fuck that shit.

We did this on another thread recently. But I'll chime in again.

KRG - if you haven't eaten there then you are missing out. I second Fowllyd and Lou.

Pretty sure I used the same one Ted, after a night in the Academy club.  Also 20 years ago!

Furthermore, if you're eating at the Mangal II, then wash your meal down with either Efes pilsner or, if you prefer wine, Villa Doluca red. Both from Turkey, of course; the latter is an excellent pure Gamay at a decent price (you can also get it in all the Turkish food shops in the area, along with the wonderful freshly-baked bread. I really don't miss living in London, but I'd love to be able to get those things just by walking round the corner as I used to do...)

Right. I dont like swearing for swearing's sake... however, my brain is so fucking huge it makes you all look like stupid cunts... but as I have said previously, there is no need for bad language unless it's absoutely fucking necessary.

Those like me with huge fucking brains will recognise that it can be very effective if used with full on intellect as a wonderful expression of humour (funny as fuck), insult (you complete and utter Hypo), love (you complete an utter fucking pap/goat/toke/lou), and confusion (you complete and utter fucking bear). It is also an important part of the weekend. Those times when great minds meet to discuss world problems, define potential solutions, identify new visions of peaceful humanity.. and finish up those evenings of intellectual brilliance with those immortal lines '' I fucking love you mate' and 'you're my best fucking pal' .
