Very proud and very happy to sign a new contract with @ SouthamptonFC # SaintsFC # WeMarchOn

Now, now.

As you more than anyone should know, Big Bitter Bob, life is about taking part - not winning.

Excellent news, BTW.

So, just me that still isn’t all that sold on him?

Not sure that we should be employing players who can’t spell ‘official’. Disappointing.

I’m more concerned about his ability to defend, truth be told.

Good enough for the European champions, so it seems. Good player, excellent that he’s extended his contract. Looked a little lightweight at the start of last season but grew into life in the Premier Leauge very nicely.

Hmmm, so how many of the Greece '04 winning team would you have wanted to snap up after their victory?

Would you have signed Djimi Traore after his CL win in '05?

Don’t think it’s quite that simple.

See also Roberto Di Matteo.

He’ll be fine - I’d much rather Martina went to Everton than Cedric.

This action might be most valuable as a timely reminder to Jose that he’s on his own when it coms to checking out how green the grass is over the fence.

Well, the initial comment was slightly tongue in cheek. I’ve seen enough of him to feel very pleased that he’s exetnded his contract with us. You can also be certain that the club’s management wouldn’t have offered him any such extension if they didn’t consider him to be worth it.

As I said previously, he got better after a rather shaky start, and looked very good by the end of the season. So I’m not worried about his defensive abilities; our goals-against column didn’t look too shabby last season either.

I think Cedric has proved in the Euros and at times for Saints that he can both defend and attack. Sure he’s been a bit inconsistent, which is only to be expected for a reasonably young chap moving to a new club, country and league, but I can’t help but think at least part of that was down to Koeman’s habit of dropping him just when he seemed to have hit his stride.

I admit he’ll always be at risk of being overpowered in the air at the back post, but that’s true of many modern fullbacks and certainly was of Clyne on numerous occasions, especially his first season in the Prem with us. Give him time and a run of games and I’m sure he’ll show why we shelled out on him in the first place.
