Cliched Match Thread: The 'now then now thens' v The mighty and magnificent Saints

Alas, this week, Iwill be enjoying an outing to The Big Smoke with Family, so needed to get the old match thread started early in case of forgetfulness - I will not be able to contribute but hope you enjoy appropriate amounts of cliched comment, and debate and dont forget plenty of tired sterotypes - afterall Tarbuck made a career out of them…now who were those feckers who bombed our chip shop again? :lou_facepalm_2:

We’re not fucking playing Jimmy Savile!

I hope you have your match thread role well and truly bolted down: some fucker will rob it.

Scouser Liverpool fans in the main are sound, its the cling on wankers who are fucking delusional.

Is he not more ‘how’a about that then’ ?

It’s a sign of the times Bucks… having to get in earlier each week to keep the fuckers at bay. I would be lost without this pivotal forum role…

I’ve seen a change over the years. I first got here in '94, five years after Liverpool had lifted their last gong. Brilliant season, looking back, but Liverpool were still seen as a team capable of going for honours. Some of the local Reds were full of themselves then.

“Sou’tamp’ton? What division are dey in?”

I think my finest moment might have been talking absolute bollocks to Phil Thompson while steaming drunk in the Mulliner, having no fucking clue who he was, and knowing even less about football than I do now. He must have loved it. Liked Matt Le Tissier back then.

Everton, under the disastrous “leadership” of Norwich great Mike Walker, were bottom of the league for what seemed like forever. Joe Royle comes in, they whack Liverpool 2-0 and go on to win the cup. My Bluenose mate used “two nil” as a chat up line on the night of the derby, and you know what, it worked with half the girls in the city.

These days, “da local Reds” are a much humbler bunch. They don’t have an expectation or an entitlement of winning. I think they’ve expectedly been quite worn down by events, especially United overtaking their title tally.

But yes, I have a large amount of ire for the glory hunters that phone up on talkSPORT with southern accents crying about how “we” are “doing so facking poorly, guvnor, me ol’ China” (insert further potentially offensive cockney smears here).

I have no sympathy for them, but no desire to do anything about it either. Punishment has already been meted out, self-inflicted as it goes. They’ve put themselves on national radio, and revealed themselves to be glory hunting mofo’s that bitch and cry when the long term credibility gamble fails to pay off. Fuck those guys. The boys and girls that stayed local must be laughing their fucking arses off.

I understand that Anfield is one of those grand old stadiums that draws in tourists by the bucketload. Who can blame them really? History’s interesting.

But if you keep filling The Kop with people that are just there ‘to experience it’, you’re going to be left without an atmosphere to market. Loud renditions of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ sandwiching the beginning and end of a match, but between that nothing of substance to tuck into.

I wouldn’t be so sure of that, ant. Maybe for cup games and Europe stuff, but the whole point of them building that extended stand is to deal with massive oversubscription of season tickets. My mate of mine got his first season ticket three years ago, had been on the waiting list ten years, and that was a relatively short wait. He basically had to wait for someone to die or become financially unable to keep going.

Is football the only ‘industry’ in which punters keep spenidng money no matter how shit the product is in the belief that this ‘loyalty’ somehow sets them apart as superior to others… when in all other ‘industries’ this would be viewed as stupidity? Of course there are those who will suggest that football IS thus set apart and is culturally important for this very reason… but as I get older, you do start to question teh sanity of those that are prepared to get into debt, prioritise football over family, work, friends etc… yet they are held up as ‘real fans’ - in all honesty, am I the only one who is questioning this?

Cool, I genuinely hope that’s the case - for their fans and the state of football crowds in general.

It’s Liverpool Away eve. I know we’ve had some recent success in this fixture with Lovren getting the winner in the 1-0 a couple of years back, but that was really the last of our Liverpool success. However shit Brendan Rodgers was for Liverpool in general, he did seem to have us figured out after that game. Different teams, different managers.

According to Ron the other day, Stekelenburg is fit again, good news for anyone that gets the Kelv jitters. Klopp’s lot had a fairly frustrating European fixture on Thursday, but the worry is that this becomes the game where it all clicks. I’ve not got too much reason to disagree with the assessment of Liverpool coming straight out of the blocks, although I think we should do our best to do that ourselves. We should have the fitness advantage with eight days of rest. There’s no reason to let them dictate terms early on, although they may compensate with a bit of additional sharpness.

Very excited about this now. I’ve only ever seen us win live here once. Hoping for a repeat.

I can seriously see us nicking all 3 points here, IF we are on our game. The pressure is all on Liverpool. It is not the fortress it used to be for sure, where teams used to fear going and It should be a good open game.

I have seen us win once out of 6 visits to Anfield and have seen a couple of 6 or 7’s against! But it was worth it for the 2-3 back in the 90’s.

We are a much better team now and Liverpool are much worse. I expect a draw at least!

Is this the match thread? If so, c’mon Saints!

Bit dull at the moment!

Come on you greeeeeeens!
