Concentrating on the league

We’re all disappointed after yesterday’s result. We wanted silverware, but we’ve ended up with the wooden spoon of a cliché.

Given that we’ve no choice but to concentrate on the League, what are your expectations for the rest of the season? What now, is a good finish?

I think we will have a good run in

We have been a stricker away from being good this year and now we have one.

I’ll be very happy with 8th and I think we could do it. Excited about next season now we have Gabbiadini. Once Boufal is fit and settled we’ll be even better. I’m one of those who believes Virgil will still be here next season, so things are looking up. I’m feeling positive!

VVD staying on would be massive. It’s difficult to see that happening unless the club can make him a serious offer. He’s already got the captaincy when fit. I’d have no problem with him being our top earner. Magical player with positioning so good you wonder if he has a teleporter. Just seems to be under the danger all the time.

If we could sneak 7th above Everton I would be over the moon, sadly I think we have left it far to late, we’re 10 points behind West Brom in 8th so I think, realistically, 9th place is the best we can hope for.

Play like we did yesterday, but not make silly errors at the back and I’ll be more than happy wherever we end up…as long as it’s not the Championship.

If we play every game like yesterday Gabbiadini will be getting the golden boot for this season :lou_lol:

Any way is @gavstar starting the next match thread as the incumbent non winner or is he handing back to Who was it CB Saint? That he stole the mantle from in an obvious ploy of going for glory :lou_surprised:

Edited because I still can

I would take 10th or above. I too think VVD will be here next season and have no doubt that we will be a stronger outfit.

We need to address a few issues though. I would sell Clasie. Though I think he is a tidy player, I reckon we need a more physical and attacking option in midfield. Fer maybe? Probably someone young and in Europe though.

Our line up yesterday did pretty well and shows that we are not far off:

Forster, Cedric, Yoshida, Stephens, Bertrand, Romeu, Davis ©, Ward-Prowse, Tadic, Redmond, Gabbiadini. Substitutes: Hassen, Caceres, McQueen, Hojbjerg, Boufal, Long, Rodriguez.

Add to that: VVD, Austin, Sims and we start to look strong.

Not convinced about Forster. I would sell him if we can find anyone daft enough to give us a decent wedge. Reckon we might move JRod on too if we get a half decent West Brom offer in the summer. Be nice to get Ben Foster in part exchange.

Be interesting to see who steps up from the academy too. Hesketh? Seager? Return of Gallagher?

Yep, reckon 8th is best we can hope for, but 9th is most likely unless WBA have a nightmare of a run-in - they look pretty solid though.

Main issue is what happens behind the scenes rather than on the pitch. If we can keep hold of VVD and make some good decisions in the summer transfer window then next season could be quality. If we lose VVD then it could potentially have a knock-on effect to the rest of the players.

Personally, I think we could keep him for one more season, but decent CBs are in such short supply that we may get a ridiculous offer we can’t refuse. Who knows.

I think this season has, unfortunately, shown up Forster’s shortcomings, so wouldn’t be against selling him. Puel seemed to favour Hassen at Nice so maybe he’s planning on doing so again, with McCarthy as back-up…

It’ll be a bit of a shame to look back on this season as a bit of a ‘meh’ one in future, given how close we were to lifting the cup, but I think that’s what it’ll end up being.

However it ends I got to watch Saints in Prague and at Wembley so (despite the results) it will never be a ‘meh’ season for me.

I think you are confusing me with @btripz , he took over from CB (which I did flag up, admittedly after I had started the cup final thread). But yes I will start the Watford thread, no shirking responsibilities and all that, wallowing time is over :lou_wink_2:

I appologise and I edited that thread to put your name in in place of Btripz, so I wasn’t far wrong. Unlike that blind git of a linesman yesterday.

Unfair, I did it to save @cb-saint because he was getting mentally scarred by the results. He asked to be relieved of duty and as a kind and caring fella I did just that.

haha I know mate, was just having a naughty dig (again) :lou_wink_2:

Qualifying for Europe via the league is now going to be tricky but not impossible. I would settle for top half finish and Gabbiadini getting to double figures, if we could do that and keep VVD for another year that would be a great starting point for next season.

I hope Le Tiss keeps up his critisims. Ive often got frustrated that he is so understanding. Yesterday showed the real frustration he feels. I think someone desperatly need to redaress the media bias not only in reporting but in the views given in games.

Finish top half and win more than we lose has always been the yardstick I’ve personally tended to set us each season since the end of 12/13. So far so good, lets see if we can kick on. It’ll be tough as our fixture list isn’t an easy one.

Above Everton would be nice but unlikely

Above West Ham is a ‘must’ for me :lou_lol:
