Very well said. I remember, back in the early 80s, going to watch a Tottenham UEFA cup match (I lived in Reading, so it was a bit of a trek). My only reason for attending was that the opposition was Feyenoord and Cruyff, then 36 or so, was playing. Spurs won 6-3 but one of Feyenoord’s goals was a Cruyff special - shimmy past three or four defenders, dummy the keeper and slide the ball past him. Superb.

I would have given my left bollock to have had this level of skill when I was playing football.
I copied the Cruyff drag back and turn in a match and managed to do it without faiing over. A team mate of mine was hugely impressed with this piece of skill and rushed over to tell me so. I was tempted to say it was just improvised but did fess up to copying one of the great man’s moves. Him, Pele and Big Ron Davies were huge influences on me growing up and although I was nothing better than a park player once in a while I could do something that emulated my heroes and that would be enough. I once scored a hat trick of headers that was mostly down to studying Ron’s techniques over the years. Happy days. Sad when your heroes get old.
