Cultural influences

The thread to reflect on how culture has shaped you as a person, both in the short term and the long term.

I will start this off with a simple one. After getting back from watching Arachnophobia at the cinema, I checked my bed for spiders.

When there’s nobody home I like to dress up in a turn of the century ankle length dress and pretend I am Anya from The Cherry Orchard.

When I watched when Debbie did Dallas I got shafted all over the bargate.

I think I remember that one. Wasn’t it “Barry Bangs Babes In The Bargate” or the sequel “Barry’s Bargate Bummers”?

I think it was the latter.

The mystery of Barry’s hometown hatred finally solved.

This thread can end now and we’ll all be happy.

Having just finished watching the World Cup footy, I’ve realised I don’t have any potatoes in the house.

Use Vodka it is only liquid potato.

I did the same after seeing the series of Taggart where people were being muddered by spiders and snakes being put in their beds.

I started drinking white russians after watching the big lebowski.

During my x-files phase I was convinced I was being abducted by aliens.

I stopped swimming in the sea after seeing Jaws.

Until I came here got pissed went diving & met a 3 metre long shark face to face.

Didn’t cure my phobia but cured my constipation.as he swam in a circle round me

After seeing Jaws I don’t think I went in the sea for twenty years!

I wasn’t that comfortable in the bath.

Bletch has been massively influenced by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Or maybe it was the other way round.

Went to Gdansk in Poland in about 89 and drank copious amounts of very nice Vodka and have been drinking it steadily ever since.

He is the love child of Llewellyn-Bowen and Quentin Crisp. Only more flamboyant.

Ditto but switch Poland with Grenada and Vodka with Rum

I used to drink white wine (didn’t like red), have my steak burnt to a crisp and not really like spicy food or garlic.

Then I worked in France for a year, now I know how to treat red wind and I drink that and not white.

My steaks are generally now blue or rare.

And I love garlic and well seasoned food.

I’m culturally influenced by gangsta rap music - I wear a gold grill, have pimped my ride, am a misogynist and have a deep irrational distrust of homosexuals.

None of this is true.

I used to hate japanese food - too slimey, too raw, too wierd

Then thanks to many trips to asia, some very helpful people and some high end restaurants, i absolutely love it. Half the battle is getting over the textures and concentrating on the flavours.

Less extravagantly coiffured though.
