Doctors vote to strike for first time in history of NHS

Could have just as easily gone into “Tories in trouble?”, but this is an issue broad enough to justify its own thread, I reckon.

NHS junior doctors in England have overwhelmingly voted to strike over proposed changes to their contracts.

The British Medical Association balloted 45,000 of the doctors after negotiations between the professional association and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt collapsed.

98 per cent of junior doctors said they were prepared to take part in strike action, with 99.4 per cent saying they were prepared to take part in action short of a strike. Voter turnout was 76 per cent.

Big numbers.

Although I don’t like strike action that could cost lives, I think it’s probably the correct thing to do.

One of my friends from University is President of ASiT, and has been in contact with Jeremy Hunt, and she said that the strike is necessary, so I am taking her word for it.

It’s a complex one that one is for sure. Personally I don’t think they are right in striking because what they are being offered doesn’t look that bad to me.

Their main beef seems to be the fact that weekends are no longer deeemed unsociable and they, therefore, lose a bit of money because of that. From what I can see only a smal %age of them will actually be worse off after the contract is forced on them.

There is also the concern that hospitals will over utilise them because there will not be any more checks on that, this I don’t agree with.

Dr John Fisher of the BMA said that such a strike could be carried out without harming patient safety, while Mr Hunt has said it would put patients at risk.

In an email to doctors after the result was announced, he wrote: "While the BMA regrets the inevitable disruption that this will cause, junior doctors have clearly been left with no alternative but to consider strike action due to the Government’s continued threat to impose a contract that is unsafe for patients and unfair for doctors.

Maybe he could clarify why the new contract is unsafe for patients and unfair for doctors as, from what I have read, I can see scant information regarding this?

So, OK, a bit more quick reading and it seems that the new contract is considered unsafe because of the checks on hospitals and how they use Junior Doctors is to be removed. Surely, then, if this is reinstated they have no cause for complaint!!

I’m torn and the reason is we all have to work at weekends or most (this is the real rub nothing else) do, the media love the NHS so they’ll get the backing there but your fucked if you are a fireman or tube worker, hell no you cant strike.
76% turnout is massive though and 98% for strike action is a brilliant 2 fingers up to the tory bastards.

Going on tomorrow. Well done, Jeremy Hunt. You’ve engineered the first ever doctor’s strike in the history of the NHS.

I’ve had my appointment for my piles cancelled. A real pain in the arse.

CUNT. Try CUNT. Jeremy CUNT rhymes. Which fits like a CUNT because he is a CUNT.

what is wrong with you he is simply doing hard negotiations to try and secure Best Deal he can, and so are the doctor bros. It is Heroes on Both Sides.

Very interesting interview with 3 Junior Doctors, one supporting strike, one supporting strike but nor emergency care, and one opposing.

ALL 3 said the BMA has repeatedly misrepresented what the contract from the Government actually said, which was quite eye opening.

Mrs G duty manager at General tomorrow :lou_sad:

Have to say I find this strike pretty galling, and very selfish.

All over Saturday Premium Pay. I hope some of those Junior Doctors need urgent medical care today that they can’t get, so they can see how this hurts the general public.

This is why we like old threads.

I don’t know that withholding NHS services is an effective way to blackmail Tory bros, cos we all go Private. They would do better to draw their picket lines around elective botox surgeries.

Yeah, I changed my mind when it turned out it was about Saturday Premium Pay - she’d been sold a lie by the BMA as a lot of the other naive supporters have.

Cherts the Jeremy Hunt supporter.

Never let it be said that Tories don’t like minorities.
