📺 Documentaries

Decent documentaries would get lost in ‘Good Shows’ thread…so ones I’ve watched recently include.

Storyville - Cartel Land - currently on Iplayer. A dual story telling the story of the effect of the drugs cartels either side of the Mexico/US border. The US story is pretty much standard rightwing nutjob vigilantes - and not particularly interesting. The Mexico story pretty much sums up why the country is fucked. Essential viewing if you want an insight into why/how the cartels hold so much sway.

Arena - Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus - also on Iplayer. A road trip through the American South with stories and decent music attached.

There must be a tonne on Youtube - if people fancy linking decent docs that would be pretty sweet. I’ll watch decent factual over fiction any day of the week.

We’d probably get Furball back in a flash if I linked some of my faves  Lets start with something that isn’t super contentious. The excellent John Pilger.

Hey TCK, have downloaned that Storyville episode now, based on your recommendation. Have you seen any of the other episodes? One is about Lance Armstrong, another an FBI counterterrorist sting, etc.

Ok it’s a long watch, It’s Adam Curtis though expect lots of edited footage and voiceover for 2 hours. It’s a really interesting film if you can stick with it

All of the US marine camera footage is for real

The basis of ISIS

Some of the imagery is insane

Well big thanks to Cholula for the recommendation on Storyville - Cartel Land. The Mexico story, which thankfully is about 80% of the documentary, was gripping. What an insight into just how totally screwed up that country is, with the normal decent people as ever paying the price.

You’d have to torrent it, but Still The Enemy Within is well worth a watch. It’s a detailed look at the Miner’s Strike and ia scary glimpse at what could have been.

+1

The only issue I had with it was the American part. It just seemed a tad pointless? I don’t really know what it added to the film. I would have been perfectly happy with it being just about the Autodefensas, and perhaps more on the process leading up to them becoming the rural defence force, and Mireless’ estrangement from the group - which although mentioned, seemed very rushed and didn’t make much sense.

This is much more interesting than glimpses of some American dude strolling around the desert. There probably is a decent film in following these guys around, but the time given to them made it seem a tad pointless, as there was no depth to it.

Thanks though, Cholula. It was a very enjoyable watch.

This is still on iPlayer actually. And well worth the watch. Discussed on another thread on here I think.

A couple of other Adam Curtis docs available on YouTube. I like this one:

The Hunt (BBCiplayer) has been awesome.

Making of a Murderer on Netflix. Currently caning 9.4 IMDB and 85% on Metacritic. Plenty of real life true crime docs out there. This is superior to all of them. Shocking and barely credible but all true. Nuts.

Grey Gardens, a fascinating documentary about the aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy…

It’s a factual film but uses kind of covert techniques to reveal things, it’s just the trailer but its really worth watching.

Started watching based on your shout, TiCK.

Compelling and a half.

3 episodes in and I just want to get rid of the relatives and keep watching it.

No spoilers please!

No spoilers from me. I’m 5 episodes down now. It’s taking all my willpower not to Google the outcome. Amazing television.
