Double barrelled names

There seems to be a trend for more and more double barrelled names, I’ve noticed this particularly watching the Athletics. I’ve never understood why people want to do this, it never crossed my wife’s mind not to simply take my surname. I wonder how the parents of the heptathlete Johnson-Thompson came to their decision. Surely one of them must of thought “let’s stop fucking about and just toss a coin”.

What about when she herself wants to marry a Mr Smith-Jones, what happens then FFS, a quad barrel?

We should do what they do in Switzerland where women keep their birth surname after marriage.

Taking a husband’s surname is really quite old fashioned I think. And what about same sex marriages?

Mind you, both my daughters ‘took’ their husbands’ names when they got married. I suppose some old fashioned people can’t cope with children of a union not having the same surname as their fathers.

Well everyone can do as they want of course, there are no rules. As a homophobe I have no idea what same sex couples do, what do they do?

It’s a temporary solution at best, isn’t it? What happens when two double-barrelled children wed? Quarduple barrelled name? Where does it end? If the offspring are in any way sensible, they’re either going to jip one of your names off or worse, get creative, forming bastard amalgams of surnames like Smones or Jith.

It’s just not tenable over the long term.

Bum each other or lick muff?

I’ll tee them up…

I think whoever has the better surname should win.

I think that’s a good idea Miss Brush.

Look, if you’re going to take on a different name as a result of your union, it makes no sense to use both your dad’s surnames. You are far better off coining a new family name that reflects the union, or something amusing of your choice. According to the UK Deed Poll Service, someone decided to rename themselves Jellyfish McSaveloy, so bar set, the world is your oyster.

We could have new generations of Tinderlays and Toiletfucks if we’d only buck with convention.

I’m with you on this. However, it would mean the ‘have you looked into your family history’ thread would be defunct, and I’m not sure if I could cope with that.

I just hope my daughter doesn’t want to marry a Mr Nobbs.
