Football and ethics

Thoughts?

Very strange. Others have sent “private” texts or had “private” conversations off camera or off mike and have been brought to book. Cop out basically.

Changed the subject line to make this a broader conversation after reading this article:

Wrong answer, football.

Saying appalling things you don’t really mean is quite good fun, and a privilege you can only enjoy in private conversations with friends that know you well enough to understand that you ain’t really an appalling person.

I’m not saying this is necessarily the case with Mackay - he might just be a cunt - but I.e my text conversations with my best mate from school would seem horrific to the outsider, but you don’t know the context. You don’t have our shared experiences. You can’t recognise what is irony, what is an in-joke, what is referencing some thing that happened 20 yrs ago. You should butt ur nose out!

Or to put it another way, punishing people for their private conversations, is uncomfortably close to punishing people for their thoughts. What if he had wrote these things in his diary?

Punish people for racist violence, of course

Punish people for racist actions, of course

Punish people for verbal abuse, sure, why not?

Punish people for having racist thoughts? Not for me. Educate them. Think worse of them. But you can’t make it fucking illegal.

“Ethics” and “football” - two words that don’t belong in the same sentence (unless of course the word “lack” is present)

Ok, well that’s a pretty strong case. So it’s the fact it wasn’t done in the environment of work or in a public space that makes it different?

At the moment, but as consumers we’re best placed to change that…

Not precisely. If the bro he was talking to had complained, there would be a punitive case to answer. But as it stands, as we’re effectively eavesdroppers, we can think ill of him, but we can’t actually do anything about it.

Got to go now, I need to send some racist, homophobic & paedophile pm’s to tokyos.

Two words that just do not go together, I’m afraid!

Ooh, I do like it when every now and then, Bearsy gets all serious on us.

He oviously has lots of really sick, racist, homophobic etc thoughts and has had time to build his case

I see that Delph has done yet another U turn. I should imagine the Villa equivalent of TSW bedwetters will have a field day with that one. Delph was being held up as a good egg in turning down mega bucks to stay at Villa. Opps.

It seems very odd that a player should be penalised for reacting to racist chants. The ref should have taken the players off of the pitch until the chants stopped and threatened to abondon the game. I wouldnt blame amyone suffering racist chants for walking off of the pitch. Not acceptable in this day and age.

yeah my villa bros are v.MAD bout this. I was like, leave off, he’s not a Villain. They didn’t like that tho!

It seems that racism is basically accepted, if not welcomed, in Russian football. How FIFA could have thought it appropriate to put the World Cup this is beyond me. Oh wait. Bribes.

The problem is that these weren’t private conversations. They were business conversations. If they cannot be sanctioned that how can discrimination be eliminated from football (or at least reduced in its pervasiveness). Virtually every racist statement could be characteriized as private if it is on TV or chanting in a stadium.

The statement about there not being very many white faces, for example, reflects a clear willingness to hire some blacks, but not too many.

If were truly a private conversation between two friends that would be one thing. However, it was two employees of a business discussing business in a way that was inappropriate especially given that their boss was one of the targets of their racism.
