Flop Southampton striker Emmanuel Mayuka to join Spartak Moscow

Southampton striker Emmanuel Mayuka is set to join Russian club Spartak Moscow after being stripped of his squad number.

Mayuka, 24, has played just 16 Premier League games, without scoring a single goal, since moving to St Mary’s from Swiss club Young Boys in a £3million deal in the summer of 2012.

The Zambia international was left at home for Saints’ pre-season tour of Holland last week after being told he is not part of manager Ronald Koeman’s plans for the new season.

Mayuka scored his only competitive goal for Southampton in a 5-1 Capital One Cup win at Barnsley in 2013.

The Saints are reportedly eyeing Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin to bolster their forward options.

Koeman has already signed ex-Feyenoord captain Jordy Clasie as a midfield replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin, who moved to Manchester United from the South Coast in a £24m deal.

Well, it looks like Mayuka is moving on. Never made the slightest bit of impact here. Doesn’t even have a squad number, according to the Mirror article. Got to wonder why on Earth we signed him.

#85 Top Player in the world, pap.

Above John Terry, Samir Nasri, Javier Pastore & Wesley Sneijder.

An odd one, that’s for sure.

Agree that he didn’t seem to make any real impact. But I’m not sure that he was given a full run in the team. Probably because he wasn’t up to Prem standard, but wouldn’t be surprised to see him score a few elsewhere.

Yes, well I’ve asked that journo for an update on Twitter

My guess is that we thought he was better than he turned out to be.

Bit more complex than that. Mayuka was an Adkins-era Premier League signing, occuring toward the end of the summer transfer window. That window wasn’t a disaster; we got Boruc, Rodriguez and Davis out of it, after all - but we didn’t get all of our priority targets, and it very much reflected the combined reach of the club and manager back then. Newly promoted club with a relatively unknown bloke in charge, expected to go straight back down.

We had to gamble. We still have to gamble, really. The academy takes chances on players that the bigger clubs overlook, and we’re still taking chances in the transfer market by importing most of our talent in from other leagues. Main difference between then and now is that we’re making better punts. Mane, Tadic and Pelle might not have done it in the PL, but their stats were monstrous where they did play. That’s the sort of punt worth taking. Back then, it almost felt as if we’d take a player if they said “yes”

Times change, happily.
