Fonte. Will he stay or will he go?

It’s a question that’s been asked on social media since the big man got back in the week. Cedric’s had his big interview, but so far our Captain has remained tight lipped.

You would imagine the club would pull out all the stops for Jose, milking it for all it’s worth. So far all we’ve been met with is an unusual wall of silence, and frankly, it’s unnerving.

Maybe it’s nothing, maybe they want to get his new contract signed then do all the bells and whistle shit after. Maybe they’ve got a massive piece planned for the matchday magazine, and staying silent to shift a few more copies.

Maybe it’s more sinister than that though. Are the rumours of bids from Man Utd & Everton accurate? Everton I’m not concerned with, I imagine Fonte would brush that aside to play European football with us. If Man Ure is right though, would that be enough to tempt the big fella away?

IMO we cannot afford to lose him. Of all the players that have gone since Darth Cortese stomped off into the distance in his platforms, Fonte would be the one that would devistate me the most. Frankly it would really put a massive question mark over where exactly our club is headed. For all the mantra of wanting Champions League football, that new 5 year plan would ring as hollow as a Les Reed interview in pre season.

Chill.

In news that’ll make Rallyboy proud, I voted to Stay.

I voted leave as my mate has a dry mattress he’s trying to flog on ebay.

He will stay. Keep the faith!

At some point in his life he’ll leave, yes.

He will die, ant. Like you and me and our forebearers.

The stumbling block in his new contract talks is his refusal to open a Twitter Account. The club insist he has one so that instead of having to type his name out everytime they mention him, they can just use his hashtag.

This doesn’t inspire me with confidence…

Sounds bad indeed. Will be a bit gutted if it happens.

So, who we buying then?

I think IF a team in the champions league came in for him, he would be tempted, if not, he will stay. We are so close to the start of the season, it would have a huge impact on the feel throughout the club.

i know people love him and that he’s been on the long journey with us to the prem, but Jose is not champions league material.

He got the biggest cheer of the day yesterday when he warmed up along the Itchen touch line. Also, he and Cedric got a round of applause before the game when announced as our returning Euro winners.

Fonte’s like a 2004 Focus.

Super reliable and will get you from A to B everyday - but it won’t last forever, it’s likely to let you down in the middle of winter and has done too many miles to have any great value.

You could keep it and it will still do you a good job.

You’ve been on some great journeys together, it has been a fantastic little car, but if someone wants to give you £10k for it, you’ve had it’s best days, the cambelt is clunky, the advisory list at MOT was two pages…have their arm off.

I leant my 2004 Ford Focus to a Portugese mate and he won Le Mans in it

Yes, but he did it as a team entry with several Ferraris, a Maserati, two Bugattis, a Lamborghini and a Transit.

Fonte said something very similar last season, possibly just before he signed his new contact. I wouldnt get the rubber sheets out just yet.

Not bed wetting or anything. But honestry if there is genuine champions league team interest, then he will go. The club won’t turn down an 8 figure bid for a player in his 30s and I’m sure Fonte himself would like a crack at the champions league and One final big pay day it would bring. Might be good for all involved.

It’s football. Players get bought and sold. As a nipper I’d have cared these days I couldn’t give a fuck.

I’ve never understood people who worship a player one week and heap abuse on him the next week if he leaves with dignity to quietly further his career in a different shirt.

Show me a man who has never felt emotion over football and I’ll show you Peter Sutcliffe or Myra Hindley.

We’ve been a club that has been pretty good with nostalgia - if a player has given much for the shirt I don’t recall us shitting too badly on anyone.

We all know times change and our hobby is their career - Rickie got his ‘dream move’ and remained a legend here.

As for those who will say ‘If he’s not a Saints player he’s dead to me’ - I say, stop killing cats and get treatment before your rape attacks escalate to serial killing.

Jose has been a fantastic servant and while with us has done very well for himself, I see no reason for that relationship to be damaged if he leaves with dignity to a bigger club.
