I was tricked, Bear. Tricked!

I should have gotten out a lot earlier than I did. That is on me.

Itā€™s tough when ur vested. You can end up watching i.e. every episode of Californication if ur not careful. I try and make judgements early, nowadays, and get out while I still can. Iā€™m v.proud of myself that I donā€™t have to watch i.e. Walking Dead or i.e. Mad Mens or i.e. any of the dumb Arrow/Flash/Agent Carter type shows.

The latest series of Game of Thrones isnā€™t very good. Too much talk and not enough of the smut that the early episodes promised. And a bit of gratuitous violence doesnā€™t slake the thirst either.

Canā€™t wait for Ray Donovan to come back though. Liked that a lot.

Nothing wrong with Walking Dead - its got better and better the last few series.

GoTits is a little poor this time, at least it would be if Ramsey Bolton wasnā€™t such a menacing bastard.

First series of Peaky Blinders is on Netflix and is worth a watch if you missed it.

Iā€™d second Peaky Blinders. Birmingham gangster show, set in a time when the city was visually interesting. Some very decent performances from Cillian Murphy and Sam Neill give excellent performances, and I am a stickler for shit accents. Loved the thundering speech that Neill delivers to his coppers on arrival.

Wholeheartedly agree with this. The missus was well into Californication and itā€™s pure shit (which, tbf, she acknowledged) Loads of nudity being itā€™s only redeeming feature.

Iā€™ve still got a bit of Sons of Anarchy to finish, should I so wish. I do not so wish. I canā€™t be arsed, and donā€™t really give a flying about the way their unconvincing little universe ends. When shows are driven by really dumb shit, itā€™s bloody difficult to care, especially when so little care was demonstrated with the casting.

Thirded.

I actually thought the second series was much better than the first. Tom Hardyā€™s portrayal of the baker Solomons was fantastic.

Good music on Peaky Blinders too. Jack White, Nick Cave and even the original stuff by Mearl.

Well, the latest episode of Game of Thrones has now been logged into the catalogue of universes I maintain in my head. A marked improvement on last weeks episode and (drum roll) the books in quite a few areas. The Bastard continues to be a bastard. Sansa is not in a great place. Friends in the north? 'flayed not, love. This isnā€™t book informed or owt, because so many things are different at this point, but I can see Brienne being Sansaā€™s saviour. That hasnā€™t happened in the books, btw. Just guessing at this point, like everybody else.

The books are bloody long, and needlessly so in my opinion. Martin keeps his characters in one place either by ignoring them, introducing new characters or introducing new characters and ignoring them. Iā€™m not moaning that much; I loved the deep dive in the Iron Islands in the books, but the plot starts to branch and branch, and well, Iā€™m not surprised theyā€™re still not done.

No such qualms for the show. Theyā€™re ripping through it, skipping loads of the fluff and getting us to the bits that we want to see. There is a big meet tonight.

Overall, not amazed in the ā€œooh, they spent tons of money on it senseā€, but some bloody strong acting, big payoffs and dramatic game-changers made this a goodā€™un for me.

Yeah I was more ok with that episode. Stuff happened! Cersei has laid an egg + there is no Jamie to save her! Still donā€™t like sandsnakes tho, even when theyā€™re topless

Thought it was a lot better this week. Apart from Bronn perfectly fine getting excited by tit, nosebleed and antidote and instant recovery in all off 30 seconds.

who would win the biggest bastard comp of Joffrey and Ramsey?

Even better this week, best episode so far this season.

Winter is here.

Why does this site have no spoiler code , you canā€™t have a GOT thread without it.

Spoilers ahoy!

Well, I think that this weekā€™s episode has made up for the legitimate ā€œShit Sand Snakes scrapā€ complaint that spawned this thread. Iā€™ve been away on business this week, so I havenā€™t had my usual access to the show. Ended up watching the repeat at 11:05 tonight, and boy, am I glad I did.

Cersei
This really is quite close to the books. She got herself in exactly the same scrape there, and the trigger, an innate sense of unearned competence on Cerseiā€™s part, was ultimately the thing that landed her in the trouble sheā€™s in now. Sheā€™s a short-term thinker that doesnā€™t consider the long-term outcomes. She enabled the very group that is prosecuting her now, and despite all the stuff she says about gender, some of it undoubtedly true in the male-dominated world of GoT, the reality is she doesnā€™t realise how bright she isnā€™t.

Arya
Again, not a huge departure from the books. Sheā€™s doing the work of the Many Faced God. She played that character in the books, and this was her first assignment. Given the 20 minute focus on one location, this was understandably a case of keeping the ball in the air.

Daenerys & Tyrion
Still hasnā€™t happened in the books, but wouldnā€™t consider this a huge departure other than the timing. Tyrion has been on his way to meet Daenerys for what seems like forever. At the end of the Dance of Dragons (the last book, and the title of next weekā€™s episode) he is still milling around outside Meereen and hasnā€™t yet met the Dragon Queen. A big part of Daeneryā€™s story in the novels involved a suitor from Dorne. It didnā€™t really go anywhere and didnā€™t do too much except that explain that once again, short dudes get the worst breaks when it comes to women.

Focusing on the TV though, this shit was electric. Two of the most outspoken (and well-spoken) characters finally meet, verbally spar, and delight. Poor old Jorah Mormont thoā€™.

Sansa
A brief visit to Winterfell reveals some interesting revelations, at least for Sansa. Her younger brothers are not dead. From a character perspective, this must be hugely ennobling for Sansa. The girl who had no family to live for suddenly determines that some of them are still out there.

Jon Snow / Hardhome
Saving the last, best scene, until the end. Itā€™s another GoT battle, but unlike those that have gone before, this one is both on-screen (many of the early battles in the War of the Five Kings were not) and most impressively, happening in broad daylight. The other two major battles, Stannisā€™ assault on Kings Landing and the assault on the Wall, both occurred at night, very forgiving on the budget.

Not a bit of it here. I am not going to pretend for a second that this was Helmā€™s Deep on scale, but it easily eclipses any other battle put to screen in GoT. The bit where the wildling chick gets whacked? Wow, that was difficult to deal with, and gives an indication of the desperate struggle that lies ahead.

In conclusion
As I said as the start of this post, it took me a little while to get around to watching this. Iā€™ve heard a lot of hyperbole about how this is the best episode ever. After viewing, Iā€™m not that sure itā€™s hyperbole. Usually, the battle episodes are an entire episode, or the best part of it. This managed to advance several plot-lines, put on a tremendous show and, not coincidentally, produced the best ā€œCome at me broā€ moment of the entire series. Loved it.

This weeks episode was the topic at work this week (frankly a change from which fake tan is the best which is getting a bit tedious now). I havenā€™t managed to keep up with the books as theyā€™re just too bloody long. I like reading, I read all sorts but there is just a lot of filler. So appreciate Pap letting me know itā€™s in keeping with them.

That was fucked up.

I didnā€™t like it this week. It was pretty good up until the point it turned into starwars and neverending story.
