...Ghosts

Do they exist?

Have you ever seen one?

Anyone got any good ghost stories?

Never seen one myself, but had friends that have sworn they have been present around ghostly behaviour.

Sorry Cherts. Bletch is a Desā€™ree hardliner when it comes to ghosts. From her song, ā€œLifeā€.

I donā€™t want to see a ghost,
Itā€™s a sight that I fear most
Iā€™d rather have a piece of toast
And watch the evening news

Does Bletch also want to fly around the world in a beautiful balloon?

FFS, itā€™s one of those Ringu womenā€¦

Few yrs after she died I was visited by ghost of Princess Diana srs. She was wearing white flowing dress. I was in bed and she was like float above me, and she come down, then she went up again, then she come down, then she went up, it went on for a bit like that, and then next morning I found I was covered in a kind of sticky white ectoplasm. I put some of it in an envelope and posted it to Cambridge University for analysis, but they never got back to me. Government Cover-up prob.

Yes, and itā€™s one of the reasons Southampton no longer has a balloon show.

The authorities were tired of having to shoot stolen balloons down whenever he took the urge.

Never seen a ghost but I have experienced some poltergeist activities as mentioned on the religion thread. It wasnt scary but it was definately weird.

Years ago I lived near a graveyard, my sisters would tell me all sorts of stories about the ghosts and apparitions that were in the graveyard.

One night, whilst abed, I felt a weight at the foot of my bed and believed it to be a ghost, so much so that I didnā€™t open my eyes to check it out.

Years later my rational mind realised that it was probably the dog deciding to sleep on my bed for a changeā€¦

So, to answer Cherts, no, no and see aboveā€¦

It strikes me that itā€™s probably easier for dualists to believe in ghosts etc; by dualists I mean people who think there is a separation between body and mind (or what some people might refer to as body and soul).

I am, on the other hand, a monist, insomuch as I donā€™t think there is a separate ethereal essence of Halo floating around somewhere inside my body; instead, I believe my mind/character/personality/soul/whatever is entirely determined by a complex material network of billions of neurons etc in my brain, and that this network is shaped by a combination of inherited genetics and unique personal experiences.

But, having rather dogmatically stated all this, I also like to hedge my bets (I was going to say ā€˜keep an open mindā€™ but, in light of what I said above, that might seem a tad contradictory); therefore, I donā€™t entirely rule out the existence of weird stuff beyond the limits of my comprehension.

(which also might seem a tad contradictory)

I guess the inherited genetics in my family include seeing ā€˜ghostsā€™ then as several members, going back generations, have seen ā€˜ghostsā€™. Maybe we are just lunatics

I thionk we were probably all monists as teenagers :lou_wink:

The most famous ghost for us Flower Road types is the one at the One Hand Clock, known as the Grey Lady of Stoneham Lane.

Interesting fact when researching this. Thereā€™s an active Hampshire Ghost Club.

Thatā€™d be onanistsā€¦

So Halo, the brain in the box question.

If, in your later years, someone says, ā€œhey Halo. We can put your brain in a box, keep it going forever, and you can live in photorealistic VR in perpetuity. You can run about and chase rabbits, or whatever it is Halo Stickmen get up to. Your rellies can come visit, etc. You can give your descendants advice 500 years down the lineā€.

Your description of what you reckon consciousness is makes you a potential ā€œyesā€, I reckon.

Would you put your brain in that box?

Yes.

HTH.

And no, it doesnā€™t involve Golf.

Ooh, spillā€¦

Interesting question, Pap; Iā€™m gonna sleep on it.

Can I have my pick of a top-of-the-range VR body and choose the option for no visits from the rellies - or, at least limited visits that donā€™t involve me giving them any more fucking money.

By the way, who told you about the rabbits?
