Great Get Together in memory of Jo Cox

I briefly mentioned this on the Maynority govt thread last night. There are a whole series of communities pulling together across the country this weekend, one year after the murder of Jo Cox.

The spirit of these is simple: as Jo said, we have more in common than that which divides us.

The weekend was kicked off in grand style last night by The Last Leg on Ch4. All of you on here who speak of division and bitterness would benefit from watching it, even if only the first 30 minutes. Blair reconciled with Hague; Balls with Gove; Sturgeon with Davidson. If they can do it, so can you.

Some of the current bitterness on the Forum is a long way from where we started. As the country tries to pull together and ignore divisions, despite all the difficulties of the past month, I am sure we could do more, fellow Sotonians.

I’ve spent the past seven weeks campaigning on unity and solidarity, @bucks .

I think it’s fantastic that Jo Cox has been honoured in this way. I was listening to her husband Brendan, who revealed that he was encouraged to keep a diary by trauma counsellors in the immediate aftermath of Jo’s death. He’s going to be publishing extracts of it soon.

I’d be interested to learn what your definition of bitterness is, sir. I’ve not been around as much as I used to be, but what I’ve seen is a forum covering some very troubling times in a pretty responsible way.

As much as I agree about the love not hate bit, I’m staring to wonder when the media are going to start pushing for the Pope to turn her into Saint Jo.

It’s not as bad as when her holiness Saint Diana died, but come on people, we don’t need to raise up someone who was an average ordinary MP as a paragon of virtue.

We should all be loving, caring and tolerant without the media love-in.

Put aside political differences, recognise that all of us have much in common with each other (much more than what divides us), see the good in others.

Tough ask I know but seriously, try it.

I do this in real life though. I reserve my right to be biased, hate-filled and spew bile on here :lou_wink_2:

Sympathise mate. Jo Cox is a symbolic figure - the spirit is the main issue here. Despite terrorism, murder, political turmoil and deep tragedy we should all try to love, not hate.

PS the more I hear about Ms Cox, the more I wish she was an average representation of most MPs, but sadly that’s not the case.

And we all go back to our own communities and still won’t integrate due to culture, family ties and religion…

PS I have actually been to Batley and other parts nearby and they’re far from integrated.

Your mouth, brain and empathy seem far from integrated.

Time and place, Bazza.

I am not wrong though and I have a huge sympathy for her and her family, same old soundbites though that are frankly wrong.

You are wrong, both in what you’re saying and what you’re trying to do.

I’ve complained before that you infest every thread with this sort of rubbish. Given @bucks admirable intent, please don’t do that here.

Her murder at the hands of a terrorist was the catalyst for positive change.

Her family and friends promoted unity and love when most of us would be seeking vengeance for that cowardly act of terror.

Their positivity should be applauded and if any soundbites appear too much for some, there are occasions when it’s cool to keep those thoughts to yourself and just accept that the majority believe that she was a good person trying to unite her community.

I had intended to go to the Walthamstow one. From the photos I’ve seen it looked a positive, well attended, integrated, diverse community event. A picnic followed by iftar.

It’s a start isn’t it? Bringing people together and maybe being less alone, less judgemental of others, seeing we are all the same.

In the interests of harmony shouldn’t the picnic have been held after Iftar so the the Muslim failthful could have joined in at the same time?
