Greatest ever Saints game

We’ve all got one…

November 1993, Saints versus Newcastle United.
I don’t know whether or not it was because I was a young teenager, but that match was one of the greatest I have ever attended or witnessed. I remember the massive cheers when Le Tissier was announced back into team - twat Branfoot had dropped him - and we always hoped that he could do something special.

I was lucky enough to be right behind the goal for both of his wonder strikes. The first one was better in my opinion, but the timing of the second one, just before full time, brought scenes on the terraces I’d never witnessed or seen since. It was amazing. Looking back at the footage I’m so happy to have been there because whilst it looks great on TV there was simply nothing like being there.

Of course, these things are balanced out by getting tonked 2-6 by Spurs after the Grobbelaar debacle…

Anyone remember the song at the time when Grobbelaar’s deliberate butter fingers were revealed?

To the tune of Heads, Shoulders Knees and Toes.

Bruce Grobbelaar lets in goals (lets in goals)
Bruce Grobbelaar lets in goals (lets in goals)
And then he drives a fucking great big Rolls
Bruce Grobbelaar lets in goals (lets in goals)

Parking the brilliant Cup Final win in 1976, my other favourite game was a 4-3 against Stoke many moons ago at The Dell. 3-0 up at half time and coasting only for Stoke to come out in the second half and give it some welly. They pulled it back to 3-3 but we got a winner at the death - the place erupted. Oh, but then there was that run of matches in The Great Escape too! Argh…so many choices!

Like SOG, I’ll put '76 aside and say the 6-2 against United is the first to spring to mind.

However I’m going more recent and say the 8 nil Sunderland one. No only because of the cricket score but for the bigger picture. We’d were just coming out of the summer meltdown, Poch had gone, the spine of our team had gone and this was the perfect tonic and made a big statement to the doubters … crisis, what crisis ?

The OP’s choice of game is a good one. Was stood behind the goal for both MLT’s screamers. On my 21st birthday. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Otherwise I’ll go with beating United on pens at OT. A day of McEwans Export and Pro-Plus. Rolling around on the terraces when we scored. Almost pissing myself during the pens. Flowers running the length of the pitch, Jeff Kenna’s sideburns etc etc.

Welcome to Sotonians, Dizzyfeet - top thread to get you off the mark, too.

I’d say the best game I ever attended was our victory over Liverpool in the spring of 1983. They, of course, were well ontheir way to winning the league (as was almost always the case at that time); I think a win would have sealed it for them.

We scored very early - Martin Foyle was brought down in the box and Steve Moran scored from the penalty. They equalised and then took the lead, but before the first half was done the great Nick Holmes scored two (the second of which was a real beauty).

The second half was brilliant - Liverpool did their damnedest to break us down, but they couldn’t. In spite of the lack of goals, it was a superb 45 minutes of football.

I also recall SOG’s choice very well - one of Stoke’s goals was a thunderbolt from Dave Watson, who’d only recently left us to join Stoke. I also remember their manager making somewhat disparaging comments about Saints, to the effect that we were only considered an entertaining team because we didn’t know how to close games down. Sour grapes, but in some ways you could say he was right.

Still regularly attends games at St Marys and was sat a few seats away from me in the Itchen South on Sunday.

Watson hit a screamer that whistled past Shilton. I also seem to remember that their revival in the second half was prompted by an electric display by ex Skate Alan Biley. Bastard.

It’s a great choice. Seeing those goals on highlights reels still brings tears to my eyes.

Beating Spurs in the 03 cup run felt pretty good.

Saints 4-1 Liverpool 1989.

Forest 1-3 Saints 1997

Stand out for me.

Nah, I’m much more of Chris Marsden type (albeit with a lot more hair). Pretty safe and dependable, nothing too fancy but every now and then come up with a surprising blinder!

Good shout. Mickey Evans? Proper pandemonium in the away end.

Mick Mills man-marking Dalglish. Wow. Defending as an art form

Would much rather watch that than, say the 5-5 draw v Coventry in 1982 that sometimes gets mentioned on the ‘best games’ theme

I got an eyebrow shaved off as I fell asleep the night before so I looked even more of a bellend going mental in the away afterwards with no eyebrows.

Too many to mention from Notts Forest in the FA Cup replay in April 1963 at the Dell when we were 0 - 3 down with 15 minutes to go, only for Saints to score the equaliser in the last minute. The second replay at the neutral WHL ended with Div. 2 Saints beating Div. 1 Forest 5 - 0 to Saints beating Wolves 9 - 3 at the Dell in Sept 1965, Saints conceeding an own goal in the 1st minute and with the scoring ending at 9 - 3 in the 60th minute (I still have all the Sports Echos from that season). Ron Davies hatricks…Pompey getting shafted (as usual), Matt LeTiss hatricks…FA Cup 1976…Mickey Channons Testimonial 2 days after the '76 final…RIckie Lambert hatricks etc etc. You get the picture. Looking forward to the next one. :lou_lol:

Have never been so “ill” at a match. Had been to a cricket awards dinner the night before, which carried on it the hotel bar until I was picked up in the morning to go to the game.

Lunch in Trent Bridge Cricket ground didn’t help.

Welcome dizzy feet :lou_lol:

Lots of games I could choose from, these two immediately jump out, maybe not classics in terms of performance but burnt into my memory.

Semi-final vs Watford (not sure why desrciption says 2-0), easily one of the best days out at a football match I’ve ever had.

Then this one, 1995, trailing 1-0 to Newcastle at home in the 89th minute, miserable run of form, then up steps Heaney, Flash and Shippers for an unlikely 3-1 win, went home absolutely buzzing :lou_smiley:

Edit : 2nd video blocking access, you’ll have to make do with my stellar description.

And welcome Dizzyfeet.
