Hugo Scheckter comes out as gay

The Times article is here.

Brave bloke or not a story?

Some funny stuff in the articleā€¦

When he texted the squad to tell them he was gay, someone texted back asking if Charlie Austin had just stolen his phone.

But is that funny?

Should I laugh?

Should I be disappointed with myself?

Hugo thought it was funny, we love Hugo, so why the self doubt?

Btw Hugo IS a hero - met him in Milan even posed with me & Eirc for a legendary Selfie.

Yeah I always like his public personaā€¦seems like a nice bloke.

Coming out in the macho world of Professional Football is pretty brave but Iā€™m pleased to say he did it here. Itā€™s speaks well of the spirit of the club, that he felt confident enough in the community spirit of the people he works with.

Good on you mate. :lou_lol:

Iā€™m too tight to pay for the Times subscription, can someone post the article here please

Yeah, when I first read that I didnā€™t think it was a funny responseā€¦

Do we ever think weā€™ll see a time when ā€˜coming outā€™ doesnā€™t have to be a thing? People can just be what they want? Personally I couldnā€™t care less about this. If everyone was like me the world would be a better place.

I read it without paying. Give them an email address(donā€™t forget to tick the ā€œdonā€™t bombard me with shitā€ box) and youā€™re the lucky winner of 3 free articles a month.

If you donā€™t want to do that, hereā€™s a summary.

Nice bloke comes out. Team, club and supporters shrug shoulders and say no problem, glad you trust us. The rest of the football world learn a valuable lesson.

It shouldnā€™t be a story, but I guess it is because of the environment in which he works.

Who gives a fuck if he is gay - the fact that he is apparently a decent bloke and good at his job and is all we should need to know.

I live in hope that, one day, no one will know what ā€œcoming outā€ is because everyone will be comfortable with who they are and so will the rest of society. Football still has some way to go. If it can happen in rugby, it should be further along the line in this sport.

I just think that a national newspaper think it newsworthy shows there is a preconception that in the football world itā€™s still an issue. I tend to agree, football is lagging behind a greater section of UK society in accepting it so by that token, itā€™s a good, positive story.

I doubt that tbh, I doubt that football & footballers are less PC than most other equivalent cross-section of society. If I was a gay nervous coming out, Iā€™d prob be more relax bout it in football than i.e. the construction industry. Most of my lads on the tools still talk like itā€™s the fkn 70s.

Crowd reaction i grant you is still Untested, but I think it would be fine & any dickheads causing trouble would be dealt with v.srs.

Maybeā€¦but even if itā€™s just a perception, it needs to be changed. :lou_lol:

Good on him, should never be an issue though.

Just being provocative, Phil.

Around the time that slavery ended in the US black people, who were technically equal, had to adopt all manner of appeasement strategies.

I imagine about that time you could find black people laughing at white peopleā€™s jokes that today weā€™d find appalling.

Just wondered whether Hugo was being an ā€œUncle Tomā€ and using humour to deflect.

Bottom line is I found it funny and I laughed.

In 100 years time, Iā€™m guessing that suggesting another person is gay when theyā€™re not will be thought of as weird and not funny.

Itā€™s cool - and hopefully itā€™s a small step forward in a sport that needs to catch up.
