How much is this mirrored in Southampton and what are SFC doing about it to look to increase local supporter numbers both currently and for the future?

Thanks for this, Burp.

It’s a good read, and a discussion that I have been having with a couple of Liverpool fans, mostly the missus, but also a Liverpool STH mate of mine.

It’s a valiant effort by the supporter’s association to try and stem the tide on this, a necessary one too. To use a local expression, Anfield has gone “down the banks”* in terms of atmosphere. (*“gone to the dogs”, suvvernahs!). Despite not dominating for about 25 years, they’re victims of their own success. I don’t know that it can be changed, so as positive an appeal as it is, it might also be futile.

I saw the positive response from FSG, saying that they are sensitive to the issue, but I can’t imagine that they’re expanding the stadium to flog cut price seats. Fair play to them if they do, but I reckon they’re going to need a much bigger boat to be able to accommodate their local young fans.

Madness, isn’t it? And it’s not just them. This is happening to every successful club.

When I was growing up our local club was Crystal Palace and I often used to go to Selhurst Park with my mates. My pocket money covered the bus ride, entrance fee, a bag of Percy Dalton peanuts and a cup of Bovril at half time. How times change!

And these fans will be the first to moan when they are not getting World class signings, they made a pact with the devil years ago, well over 20 years ago infact. The atmosphere has been poor at Anfield since the terraces have gone like everywhere else.

10,000 of the expansion is expected to be corporate and executive suites, approx. only 4,000 will be additional season ticket holders.
The popular myth is Liverpool is a proper working class club when our own amazingly is more boys from the blackstuff.
There are more millionaires at Anfield on a match day than most stadiums in the World let alone England.
A massive chunk of Liverpool’s season ticket support comes from the more affluent South Liverpool and Cheshire.

Like I said, I think the appeal may be futile.

I will stick up for us on this front though. I go to nearly every game, and yes, I stand in Itchen North (no sitters near us), and yes, I spend most of that time singing and engaging in bantz with the opposing fans. When the stadium isn’t full of fucking gloryhunters, all the boys and girls around me are big Saints fans, and there’s normally a good deal of atmosphere generated.

Exceptions to be sure. We collectively got a nose bleed when we were around the top four spots last year, but I will say this now.

We’ve got good support.

You were stood around 7 metres from me in that ground, even closer to the away fans than I was. They don’t have a fucking Itchen North. I’m not sure they could even if they wanted to.

Do you stand on your seat, or do you have a kickstool? :lou_lol:
