Stephens signs new Southampton deal - but leaves on loan

Expand article…

SAINTS defender Jack Stephens has signed a two-year contract extension with the club, but is heading out on loan to Middlesbrough for the coming season.

The 21-year-old centre-back has extended his current deal until the summer of 2019, and will gain further experience this term with the Championship side.

Executive director of football Les Reed said: “The move to Middlesbrough is a fantastic opportunity for Jack on the back of his successful spell in League 1 with Swindon last year.

“Our decision to hand him a new, long-term contract is a show of the club’s faith and trust in his development.

“Middlesbrough is a club with a good playing style and one likely to be challenging for promotion this season – an experience that Jack will surely relish.

“As with Sam Gallagher, who joined MK Dons yesterday, we will watch Jack’s progress closely and look forward to welcoming him back to the club next summer.”

I agree Rust, and as it says in the article above, Boro’ do play a nice brand of football.

Wish him well with his loan.

Personally felt he was ready to be in and around the team/squad. Rate him highly.

Centre back/Right Back or holding midfielder…could have been very useful this season…

Still see him here asfirst team player on his return…maybe further aquisitions due in.

Powers to be obviously think playing time at Boro will enhance his game…They know best

I am but another fan helping coach the team from block 37 of the Kingsland.

This has to mean that another CB is on the agenda for this transfer window, unless they think Turnbull is ready to play. After all, he was Swindon Towns player of the year last year so possible he is closer to premier league status than Stephens.

I agree with your analysis Redslo, and with the news that Turnbull is on his way back to Swindon Town…
