Just had a random pop up telling

me I have an infected pc, over speaker its states sky user Liverpool please call this number you have been infected, what the fuck is that all about and what do I do?

  1. Stop going onto dodgy websites.

  2. Ignore it. They prey on paranoia and ignorance. It’s easy to work out via IP address where you’re located.

  3. Disregard all of the above - you’re screwed, matey. Expect a knock on the door any minute now from the authorities.

If you call the number, you will be infected. They’ll get you to go to a website, which will zombie your PC.

As ant says, reverse lookups on IP addresses are really easy to do. I have to do them routinely as part of a spam check.

Had some interesting calls from ‘BT’ recently sayoing my PC was infected… asked them for their name and tel number so I could phone back when I had more time… they hung up which was a real shame…

I had a call about my broadband being infected. Seriously. I resisted the urge to shout WTF, but said I would grab a pen. Left them on hold and watched a film on stream.
