Lunchtime drinking

Am about to indulge in a liquid lunch with colleagues. And with a gig after work tonight, and therefore not driving, could be quite a, erm, social one.

I’ve also had an epic work morning, with the scope for more later… so I stand on the precipice of having to tidy up other people’s mess later today whilst possibly slightly tiddly.

Where do you stand on a lunch drink?

  • Never, it’s so unprofessional. Besides, my body is a temple.
  • Yes, whenever the opportunity arises. Plus toppings on the burger pls.
  • Occasionally, depends whose leaving lunch it is.

I do have the occasional lunch tipple but am inclined to feel a bit more woozie per unit than if I drink in the evenings. Plus the eyelids rend to feel much heavier after a lunchtime session.

Back in the late 1980s long, liquid lunches were pretty common - all the more so in London, where nobody had to drive. And, as I was young and working in London, I was more than happy to go with the flow. :lou_sunglasses:

Nowadays all has changed, so it seems. Not only do I neither live nor work in that London, but I drive 35 miles each way to work, so any serious indulgence would be pretty much impossible, even if I could handle several pints at that time of day. Which I probably couldn’t. :lou_sad:

If you’re out on the lash this evening only have 1 this lunchtime, will also affect your work judgement if you have more than one.

Had to work Saturday overtime once, went down pub with other colleagues and had 3 or 4 beers (wasn’t driving), went back to work and cut the best code ever!

Came in on Monday and had to rewrite the whole lot as it was the biggest bunch of garbage you had ever seen.

Apart from that Friday is always 2 pint Friday, during the week occasionally.

Used to do this, in fact it was almost required at work (back in the days when you could smoke at your desk). Trouble is, a pint or two at lunch time these days, fires up my can’t be arsed gene, so I become massively unproductive.

Boozing is left for the evenings

Generally work in places where I’d be sacked for drinking at lunch. So it’s a no from me. If I did drink I would probably have a hangover or fall asleep at my desk. I was always a bit surprised in one place that the finance team always did have a liquid lunch on a Friday and no one raised it.

It used to be the norm here too when I started 16 years ago. Then everyone became gym bunnies. Now we have a few boozers, they’re a lunchtime cabal of sorts. They are of course younger, and can handle it, whereas I will be asleep in the corner.

I drink very heavily every lunchtime because it makes home time come around a lot qucker. Plus almost no one can piss me off in the afternoons, so I am only ever fuming before 11.30am, result

Nope

Have just got back from a liquid lunch with a client after sealing a deal. Happens pretty often in town still and is par for the course, have come back to turn off PC & go out to carry on… but not like back I the late 80’s…

When I worked for a company that had an office at Town Quay we popped next door to the Platform Tavern for a work colleagues birthday, this was at about lunchtime.

At 16:30 we got a call off of one of our bosses wondering where we were. When we explained, quite drunkely, they came down and joined us and even bought a round. I seem to remember getting the last train home to Poole, just…

We were all bollocked the next day though!!

And may I say what a great boss you were!! What happened to your South African accent though??

Something’s got to make chasing rabbits down holes all day seem interesting…

The old saying No smoking 10 hours before a duty and no drinking within 100 yards of the Control Tower

More of a guideline than a rule

:lou_wink:

I did a stint in Crouch End, working for a bunch of 1st and 2nd generation Irish guys and they’d be on it most lunchtimes. I couldn’t keep up with them, they were a couple of leagues above me in the drinking stakes.

And they’d fuck off back home at the drop of a hat, for a couple of weeks, to go on the piss, often taking one of the labourers along with them to act as their driver. They’d never tell me either. I’d often turn up on a Monday morning for a client meeting on my own as Joe or Tommy had gone home for a “little rest”, along with the company credit card and a couple of fellas to drive them around.

These days, I can’t go back to work if i have taken a drink at lunchtime. I have to bin the rest of the day off or carry on in the pub.
