Malta

Off to Malta next week for ten days - any advice? recommendations? etc etc

Went there about 12 years ago, St Julians I think.

It’s amazing how small Malta is and how easy it is to get from place to place.

Def go to the Blue Caves/Grotto (where Popeye with Robin Williams RIP was filmed) amazing place,

A trip to the Northern Island (who’s name temproarily excapes me) is well worth it too.

Hire a car, don’t be worried about the Maltese drivers they’re just fine, just remember they don’t drive on the left or right they drive in the shade!

Gozo, that’s what it’s called, Gozo.

My Uncle has a flat in Gozo which any one from the family can use, I never have yet as booking flights is just to damn difficult!!!

Oh whilst at Gozo go to the Azur Window at sunset, beautiful and Victoria is well worth a stop too

Not been for 28 years, but loved it then.

Used to be a great war museum in Valetta.

Mdina (the silent city) was good, and the dome on the Church at Mosta is impressive (think it used to be largest dome in Europe and one of the largest in the world).

Gozo definitely worth a visit, as is the Blue Lagoon at Comino.

Be interested to know what you thought and to hear any recommendations when you return as I am headed there in a couple of weeks time too.

My Ma and Pa were stationed in Malta in the mid 60s and that’s where they met, got married and where my eldest sister was born.

We are staying in St Julien - I will be off diving for a good chunk of it - one of the sites will be the grotto (apparently this was where they filmed the recent Count of Monte christo when they found the treasure?)

.I think the dome at Mosta is famous for being the largest ‘unsupported’ one in Europe. And I think that a bomb fell through the roof in WW2 yet no-one was killed.

Years since I’ve been there. One time, we were trying to locate riding stables for one of my daughters and it was underneath some sort of fly-over.

Very lovely friendly people and yes - Gozo and the Popeye film set worth a visit as well as Mdina.

Well survived the blue rinse flight from Bournemouth

Did most of what you recommended - Mdina, Valletta, Victoria in Gozo - All nice places to wander around. If you do go to gozo, go to the St georges basilica rather than the catherdral - it is nicer and you will save yourself 7 euros There is a lot of construction work going on at the momemnt - we were in Portomaso in St Julian just around the corner from Spinola bay - nice upscale marina with some good restaurants Acqua?? was one.

Used the buses to get around - 6.50 euro for a week ly ticket - the taxis are absolute thieves unless they are doing the airport run where they are regulated

If diving Is your thing i used divewise in the Westin hotel - competent

Weather wise it was glorius 30-32 C was a bit windy at first but that died down.

Gozo have a micro brewery called lord Chambray - the golden ale is cracking - just dont plan to do much in the afternoon if you have several for lunch

Enjoy your trip
