Morocco

me and Mrs Sfcsim, have a trip to Morroco booked for the first week of August. After yesterday’s events we are getting increasing nervous about the trip. Ok it is highly unlikely that anything will happen out there, but it is supposed to be a holiday and we do not want to be worrying about what might happen!

We are thinking of cancelling and going somewhere else! I know your safety cannot be guaranteed at any time, but these events do have an impact on how you think.

I would at least see if you have the option of switching. It’s a very sad indictment of post Cold War policy when people are concerned about travelling to any part of an entire religious sphere of influence. The news doesn’t help either; I was watching the reports of the Tunisian atrocity yesterday; I heard the word Islamic mentioned over and over, tied to describe extremist behaviour. I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking twice about visiting a Muslim country with those messages going out.

Don’t cancel! You’re more likely to get blown up in London imho.

I’m travelling to London next week. I might cancel and go Baghdad, its probably safer! Bloody Muslims.

As an aside, I very much liked the way Batman posted news of the beheading in the French factory on the Calais thread on SWF and when it was pointed out that the incident was nothing to do with Calais he said “I know it just save starting another thread”. What an excellent approach to posting on a forum. Doesn’t matter if what you have to say is irrelevant to the thread, post it anyway just to save another thread being started. I mean, no on wants another thread on a forum for discussion, do they? That man is an asshole of the highest order.

I was thinking of going to Morocco a few weeks ago but booked up a last minute holiday in Turkey instead. Just as likely to get shot there I suppose. It is a difficult call but us Brits are a stoic breed and I think you should go where you want within reason (not Bagdad ). Do these attacks follow one another or do the terrorists keep their heads down for a bit after a massacre? It could be quite for a while now.

An aside, did you see the guy on the news who was shot in the arm? He didnt seem happy that his wife legged it back to the hotel and left him to fend for himself. He went the other way to the sea after he was shot but mentioned that his wife went the other way a couple of times. Could be a frosty trip home.

The other thing to potentially consider is that this may just be a very bad month for this. I’ve read reports that ISIS are seeking to conduct a campaign of terror throughout the Ramadan period, which ends on 17th July. No guarantees though.

Nice, it is a holy period so lets go kill people. Bastards.

You are right, as the safest place to go right now is probably Sousse. I know you cannot stop going to certain places, but it is human to try and avoid places that it could happen.

It is all crazy, I think I will stick with it for now and see what happens over the next couple of weeks. Turkey would be our normal choice, having been there 6 times, but a terrorist attack could happen there!

Well we’re penciled to go to between Monastir and Sousse on Sunday, this is also the first day that Thomson are putting flights back out to Tunisia.

Given the sheer nightmare of having to rearrange everything and to find another suitable resort and holiday (finding a suitable place for a family of 5 is difficult at best believe me) we have made the decision to still go.

I’m not going to let a mindless few dictate my life to me and these incidents are few and far between, and anyway if I was worried about things that had happened I wouldn’t use the underground, I wouldn’t go to America (how many people get shot there every day), I’d stay away from Barcelona and the Basque areas, Norway? No thanks…

@sfcsim FWIW I think Morocco is much, much safer than Tunisia, I personally have not heard of anything going on there. Been there twice and it’s a lovely place.

Fair play Btripz - Given the heightened security that will be there, you should be arguably safer that before the shootings. I m sure that you will have a great time - from personal experience of travelling to Eygpt after a bombing, the locals will be so appreciative that you chose to go and will look after you.

I’m looking for Tunisia holiday on i.e. late booking websites. I feel like there must be some Bargains to be had! But they don’t seem as bargain as you would think. What is up with that?

Leave it a month or so bear, then it will be much cheaper - same with i.e. Greece as they have to pay wonga back this month and they have less dollar than you.

Dunno bout Greece cos they won’t have any currency or banking system, so I will prob have to pay for drinks using i.e. chickens, and there is only so many chickens you can fit in ur hand luggage.

We went a few months ago. Where are you actually going to in Morocco? It’s a big place. …We went a few years ago and a few days after we left there was a bomb in the main square in Marrakech. But as many have pointed out could also be caught up here in the UK in an attack.

Went to Marrakech a year or so ago. It was completely bewildering and brilliant at the same time. A complete assault on every sense. I’d certainly recommend going there and I wouldn’t let a few bellends put me off.

Greetings from Marrakesh and riad Fabiola spa roof top terrace!

My goodness, it was our first day yesterday and we went into the market square, it was amazing. We went at dusk for a meal and sat overlooking the square and the masses of people. Then came back to the riad and onto the terrace to drink a bottle of wine and chill out!

We have booked our trip to the mountains and the waterfalls for tomorrow and Wednesday and believe it or not meeting up with friends for a meal this evening. Want to see the palace (not crystal) and the undercover market!

Well nearly time for our spa and massage for 90 minutes!

Atm so pleased we came, it is a great experience so far!

Hi Sfcsim! Glad you are enjoying it. Try and get to Jardin Majorelle too, and Le Tobsil restaurant for a blow out!

I second the Jardin Majorelle. It’s so beautiful and a calm oasis compared to the market. We’ve had a few meals and sunsets on the roof at Cafe Arabe (book for the roof).

They have made the list! We are trying to get as much in as possible. Going to the Atlas Moutains tomorrow, should be fun!

No idea what I am eating most the time, but fantastic food. Got to get lots of spices and go haggling. Cannot wait.

Got a taxi tonight, that was experience in itself. They wanted 100 we wanted 20, settled for 50. But the journey was well worth the money and we lived… Just!

Loving it!

Went to the Altlas Mountains today… I did not know you actually climb the mountain, but what a fantastic experience.
