📽 Films I have seen

Watched Sicario last night and enjoyed it. Thought story was too linear but it didn’t detract too much.

Film also notable for use of ‘finger in ear’ technique of extracting confession. It made me want to see how far I could get my own finger into an ear but haven’t tried yet. Will update if this should happen.

It also made me remember how great A Prophet is - I will now watch this again.

Suicide Squad.

Yeesh, what a mess. I was really looking forward to this, but it was badly written, horribly directed and edited and was incredibly disappointing.

Studio pressures didn’t help at all but this could have been so much better. There are good bits, but they’re massively overshadowed by the gaping holes in the film’s pacing and structure.

It’s a sad, sad story. The problem for DC is that they’re years behind Marvel in getting a coherent universe together. I guess their execs felt that they simply didn’t have the time to put a connected universe together. A huge shame, and unnecessary too.

DC has arguably got the most iconic characters, but has far fewer household names. They simply didn’t need the run up that Marvel did. Their films are disjointed, with little heart, soul or characterisation. The shame of this particular movie is that they might have actually had something decent a year ago, showed it to a test audience, and started reshooting.

They don’t know what they’re doing.

It’s more a case of risk aversion and profit driven motives. Disney Corp have an agenda to buy up movie franchises (Star Wars Lucas Films, Marvel Films, Pixar) and release movies that propagate others. It’s a business management model. There’s limited space in distribution (ie cinema seats), so fill them and reduce other companies access. Warner Bros are now desperately trying to create a franchise.

It’s risk averse for these idiots because a comic book movie has a built in audience of the demographic they like. Hence the great opening weekend numbers and then the major drop off after 3 days when word of mouth (social media, reviews etc) kick in.

Movies are now more tailored towards China for obvious reasons. Warcraft, made only $50m but huge in China because of the MMO gaming history. There’s a huge trend in blockbuster films now of less plot/dialogue and more big CGI action.

They’re going about it completely the wrong way, and with the wrong movies. Suicide Squad is a decent case in point. Does anyone really give a shite about many of these characters? Harley Quinn is the most famous, and she was retconned into the DC Universe after making her first appearance in Batman: The Animated Series.

I realise that having a director like Nolan handling a property like Batman has fucked them up, particularly as he had no interest in his universe being a part of anything else. A real shame. Bale’s Batman was perfect for what they’re setting up. They could have done a decent Man of Steel II, covered Wonder Woman, done a Flash movie, and they’d have been good to go.

By incorporating other players in these movies as significant, but not overpowering presences, like Marvel have done with Falcon, Hawkeye and Black Widow, DC could have been ready. Most people who’ve seen Marvel films know who those characters are, and they haven’t had their own films yet. Same deal with Nick Fury.

Downey Jr posted a teaser for Marvel’s Infinity Wars. It’s got an insane roster of pre-established stars from both the film and TV universes. It’s joined up. DC fucked up, and there really is no good reason for them to have done so.

There is room for more originaliy and slightly more adult stuff.

Ted just seen your posts on Guilty Pleasures fred … I guess you will have seen “Control” but in case you haven’t you really must.

Really moving… great sound track … left me not wanting to talk to anybody straight afterwards I felt so sad at the waste of such talent.

Yeah i’ve seen it Eric. One of the best British musical biopics in recent years  If not any Brit film recently. Anton Corbijns first movie. I’m not really old enough for Ian Curtis to have some relevance, but it looks amazing and recreates the world and draws you in.

Will watch it again tomorrow

I watched the Jason Bourne film last night. It was as expected, exciting, chases, fighting. I enjoyed it.

I watched Finding Dory yesterday. It was pretty poor by Pixar’s standards. My kids enjoyed it though.

Finally got round to watching Sicario and enjoyed it thoroughly.

I watched Creed for the second time and wanted to mention it. If the purpose of a Rocky-llke film is to pull the heart strings, show a boxer on a journey and show some good fights, then it hits all of those things for me, better than many of the actual Rocky sequels. I love the reworking of the running scene. It does of course, also feature quite a few shots of Liverpool.

Bellew did alright as the antagonist, but his boxing was better than his acting. I still probably wouldn’t say that to his face. Looking forward to the sequel when as predicted, Adonis Creed becomes the future of that division.

Perhaps in Creed IV, he’ll fight Russia or China’s best boxer, depending on who the US likes least at the time :lou_sunglasses:

Cartel Land (also on Netflix) worth watching if you enjoyed Sicario.

I feel like I’m missing something with that movie, cos i thought it was shite, but i’ve heard quite a few bros recommend on it, and not all of them was dumbass like u

I watched a movie yesterday. It was a black and white movie from Olden Times. It was about this bro, and he was on a Ship, and there was a bird, and she was trying to trick him to get all his Money. And then he found out, and he was Angar. And then she found out that he had found out, and she was Angar, so what she done, was she give it a few months, and then went back and put on a Posh Accent and pretended to be Someone Else, and he didn’t realise it was same bird and so he Married Her. It was quite good film, far as I could tell, even tho it didn’t make complete sense. He wasn’t blind or anything. I would watch it if I was you, see what you think. I don’t know what it was called.

Edit: The bird also had a dad, if that helps. He was one of the other characters.

Edit2: There was a snake in it also, but he was not one of the Main Characters.

I thought the film itself was above average to good, but that fight with Bellew at the end is fucking incredible. Maybe one of my favourite scenes in a film of recent years.

It’s better than most of the Rocky films.

The first one is the best. Rocky Balboa (the film) recreates the heart of that movie. I like the other movies, but they’ve all got major problems. Creed came through the mix without them.
