📽 Films I have seen

I thought it was very good.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it and it’s got a lot going for it.

Don’t know how many on here use a vpn to get e most out of Netflix, but I just watched '71 on the Canadian Netflix. It’s an excellent film starring the always outstanding Jack o’Connell as a squaddie in Northern Ireland getting trapped and injured in a hostile part of Belfast during the height of the violence.

It does a good job keeping a pretty neutral stance on the politics, portraying both parts as having a cause, but being riddled with internal problems and separations. Very tense and well worth watching.

If you’ve got kids, for some reason Netherlands Netflix is miles ahead of all the others. They’ve already got Inside Out, a superb animation that was still on at the cinema last month.

Great practical advice - and there are plenty of VPN solutions out there you can get for very cheap money. Think I pay $40 a year.

Shite that you have to do it, though.

Get Hard

I was not expecting much… and I was fucking right not to.

Now this is a blast from the past - tidying up old stuff came across old VHSsrecorded from the TV. Found a copy of ‘Salvador’. James Woods at his best in what is a tough film to watch but compelling nonetheless. Will try and dig out the old video player and a scart converter and see if it will still play.

It’s not a traditional Hollywood movie. Especially, the narrative isnt a traditional revenge story. It’s more of a cinematic experience, you have to watch it on the big screen.

How so?

Man kills other man’s son. Man follows killer relentlessly. Man kills killer.

It reminded me a bit of ‘A Man Called Horse’ right down to the ripping off of the recovery in the steamy tent scene. Maybe that was what the ‘being born from a dead horse’ scene was all about.

I do know what you mean and it’s a trend with modern directors to ignore story and character based stuff and focus on this visual experience. Gravity was lauded, rightly. But at the same time it’s almost like a theme park ride.

Not a film, but I’ve recently watched Oliver Stone’s Untold History of the United States. Superb documentary series, which not only shows the big turning points of the US’ post-war history, but also shows how interested Stone has been in the subject throughout. His entire career has been about documenting that period in movie form; Salvador is one of the many films from his own career that he is able to use.

Watched x+y last night and really enjoyed it.

It’s a UK production (BBC funded I think) that follows an autistic boy’s dream to compete in the Maths’ Olympiad.

Some wonderful young actors playing the parts of kids on the autistic spectrum, and Rafe Spall is superb as the depressed, MS-suffering teacher who tries to inspire the young lad.

You have to watch “Room” SaintBletch … Jacob Tremblay is just his character. Just an amazing performance. I really can’t recommend too much.

Bree Larson should win best actress oscar. I never know if its Bree or Brie? Or my love of soft french cheese gets in the way.

I watched Ex Machina and enjoyed it.

Wow, how much fun is Kingsman? (On our movie channel last night)

It even takes the piss out of itself forbeing a parody of early James Bond films, and Samuel L Jackson with a lisp… classic

In fact it probably is as close to what JB might have become IF Jason Bourne hadn’t turned up (and yes, loved that little call the dog JB joke as well) or possibly how an Austin Powers movie could have been if Mike Myers didn’t overact…

Very well worth watching over a TV dinner, and the Land of Hope & Glory scene has to be up there amongst movie tasteless bad joke cartoon comedy grossness classics.

“If you save the world you can *&^& my asshole” may not have been EXACTLY what the Swedish Princess said, but it has to go down as one of the best misheard lines in a movie.

Great old fashioned tosh that entertained for almost two hours.

I watched Joy yesterday. Not my sort of movie but very well acted and put together.

Fuck Sake DP, read back a couple of pages, Kingsmen has been done already, in fact you could have cribbed some of our comments line for line :lou_angry: :lou_wink: :lou_is_a_flirt:

Watched John Wick last night, dark and brooding Keanu Reeves does Matrix in real life with less dialogue to get in his way.

Cameo from Ian McShane made the film for me.

Forgot to say in John Wick the chap who plays the weasly and pathetic Reek in GoT plays a character who is weasley and pathetic, talk about type cast.

Unusually for me, I have seen three movies in quite quick succession: The Revenant, Dad’s Army and Foxcatcher. The first one I saw by choice; the second and third I was sort of coerced into seeing. Anyway, FWIW, this is what I thought about them:

The Revenant: I see that this has got mixed reviews on here; the review that comes nearest to mine - indeed, almost identical to mine - is that of Bucks above … although I did think that the story line was a little contrived in places; for instance, how was it that the fort spared so many men to search for LdC’s son yet (conveniently) only 2 men to track down the bad guy? Also, there was a point where I found myself questioning why the bad guy didn’t just kill LdC when he had the chance. But, you get this sort of thing in most films, and it didn’t detract from what I thought was an excellent movie, and one that gripped me throughout.

Dad’s Army. I didn’t want to see this movie because I suspected that it would fall into the category of There Are Some Things That Need To Be Left Alone And Not Repeated. Having now seen it, I still feel that way; but I’m happy to concede that the casting department did a good job with some of the characters, and that the film had one or two mildly amusing moments, and that Catherine Zeta Jones is still nice to look at.

The Foxcatcher. This film is based on a true story apparently. It’s quite slow paced and probably wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea - for instance, I overheard the fella in front of me describe it as ‘tedious’ - but I found it to be an enthralling human and psychological drama and an interesting study of what can happen when individuals come under the control of wealthy patrons. It also contains some good acting performances, imo.

Deadpool.

Hilarious from start to finish, great action, incredibly meta fourth wall breaking/references. Just go and see it, please.

Deadpool’s the Valentine’s Day plan for my girlfriend and I (tickets booked and everything). And she’s more excited about it than I am.

I’m really quite keen on her.

Pls don’t watch Deadpool, it only encourages them. It might be quite good film, I wouldn’t know, but if you watch Deadpool now, you’ll be watching Deadpool movies for the rest of your life, I guarantee it. You’ll be watching Deadpool 12 part 6: Stil Swimmin’ Still Dead, in 20 years time, starring RoboReynolds Unit #3.701a, and you’ll be bored out of your fucking skull. You’ll lean over to your bird, squeeze her arm, and say, “Remember when there were movies that weren’t capeshit?” and she’ll say, “No.”

I’m starting a movement. Join us! We’re called Justice League Squad Of Ppl Who Are Fed Up Back Teeth With Fucking Capeshit. It’s not a great acronym, but it’s all we’ve got so far. We’re a small gang of underdogs standing up against the overwhelming tyrany of capeshit. In many ways, we’re like superheroes.

One day they’ll make a movie about us, and it will be utter capeshit.

When JLS were on the X-Factor, I insisted to my family that their name stood for “Justice League of Southampton”, despite them not coming from Southampton, and despite them stating quite explicitly that it stood for “Jack the Lad Swing”.

Recently saw Dads Army and would agree with HS in that they have done a good job in casting and that there are a few chuckles in it, although I thought it would be funnier than it is. What you have is a warm homage to what was a classic TV sitcom and it is non the worse for that (get me, sounding all Barry Norman). A nice bit of nostalgia but not a must see.
