Nightclubs

I’m guesing that most people on here don’t frequent nightclubs so much (if at all) nowadays, but back in the day, which ones in Southampton were you likely to be found in?..me, Floaters on a Tuesday night where I actually remember Tenpole Tudor doing a gig, and maybe Manhattans on the occassional Saturday.

Early college days it was Martines. “Graduated” to Burbanks, McCluskeys and New York New York. I eventually found some sense and spent many a Friday and/or Saturday over the years in Rhino.

I’ve not been clubbing in Southampton for, I reckon, 6 or 7 years now. On the (very) rare occasions I have an evening out in town I try to stay away from the old haunts; but on a visit to Orange Rooms I always feel like I’m the oldest man in the room (to be fair I usually am, which is why I stay away from those types of places). Having friends who are predominantly younger than I am does tend to lead to those sorts of nights every once in a blue moon, but in general its now quieter, more “mature” places for this 40 year old.

I moved on to Fridays (Burbanks), New York New York…once or twice to Streetlevel and Simons wine bar…the last time I went to a Nightclub was about 18 months ago. It was the opening night of a club somewhere near the Orange Rooms and The Cuban Brothers were performing…really good night!.

Kaos was the last resort destination if you still hadn’t managed to pull by then.

The only nightclubs I ever went to with any frequency in Southampton were Raffles (or whatever it has been called over the years), Kaos or Lennons. Rest were all “townie”, innit? Not really my cup of tea at all.

Went to popWorld recently. Dear god, if this is what nightclubs mean now, I am fucking out.

Used to go to the Dorchester ‘Dorch’ and to the Onslow/Lennons. Was not really into club/club music, so gave it a miss. More of a pub, live music person.

A few ‘works nights out’ have led me to Oceana which I saw at the weekend in now Icehouse. One time about a year and a half ago I went on one of these lovely nights out. I was stood by a table and felt something touch my leg to turn around and see about 10 men rolling on the floor fighting. Such fun. Another time two of use spent about half an hour trying to find the others.

But back in the day there was a lot of nights at Jesters, Kaos, Nexus and I did go to McCluskeys a few times (a DJ once gave me one of the records I still have).

Most of the places mentioned here I’ve never heard of.

I had real class back in the day and went to either Tangiers or Zoots, both at the arse end of St.Marys St.

Did occasionally go to Floaters (if finances allowed) and remember going to the hall at Marlands (where you could shag in the storeroom) on Friday nights. Wasn’t really a clubbie person and couldn’t dance for shit, still can’t.

Anyone remember some of the older pubs though? Scullards, the Running Horse, the beer Keller underneath the Sussex Arms. Loads more, but it’s probably been done to death elsewhere.
