Obscure (or not) originals

OK, so we have the great covers thread and we have the shite covers thread. Now here’s one for original records which are generally less well known than a cover version. A few to start us off…

In these three cases, I’ve always liked the covers by the Specials and Madness. To give this post some balance, here’s the original of a cover I’ve already dissed in the other two threads:

Oh, and a final one for those who know the Beatles’ first LP. The boys do a pretty nice version of Anna, but it’s nothing compared to eh mighty Arthur Alexander:

It may seem odd to describe any song by the Zim as obscure (well, it does in my world anyway), but I’d be willing to bet that an awful lot of people would think of this purely in terms of Adele.

And another - the wonderful Big Joe Turner, with Fat Bill Haley nowhere to be seen…

Great thread Folly D.

I’ll contibute more fully when I’ve got my thoughts together, but I couldn’t let your reference to a track from Time out of Mind pass without saying that this is the best track on there…

Sorry for being OT, but all I’ve got is my Bletch avatar, three posts and the truth.

No worries on the OT bit, Balti - we’re not under heavy manners on this site. I’m inclined to agree with your choice too, though Not Dark Yet is also truly fabulous.

I often wish that Dylan had worked more with Daniel Lanois.

You’ve given me a real quandry there Wolfy, on any given day I might just change my mind.

Not Dark Yet, might just swing it as shows his voice in the best light for years, whereas Trying to get to Heaven has a great message.

Ask me tomorrow…

It’s for reasons just such as this that I can never pick favourites - my answer would depend so much on mood etc. at the time of being asked that it would be, in effect, meaningless.

Original to the cover I posted. Love both versions a lot, hard to pick between them.

Some good choices here Fowllyd. I love a bit of ska/rock steady. PB looking sharp in that penny collar too.
