Who has the toughest December fixtures in the Premier League?

Show/hide article…

How difficult are your club’s Premier League fixtures this December? From toughest to easiest, we rank each team’s schedule ahead of this month’s action.

Sky Sports Premier League will bring you 19 live games this December, and with seven rounds of fixtures on their way before the year’s end, struggling clubs have the opportunity to turn their fortunes around - though for some it could become a month to forget.

Before December’s Premier League action kicks off this weekend, who does have the toughest run? Michael Hincks ranks each team’s run-in to 2018 based on the current average league position of the clubs they are up against…

With matches against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United to come, Southampton statistically have the toughest month ahead. The Saints have only won one of their last five league matches, and Mauricio Pellegrino will target a morale-boosting victory over Bournemouth this weekend before their tricky run begins.

Brighton are not far behind, with five of their seven matches against top-half opposition. The Seagulls host Liverpool this Saturday, while trips to Wembley and Stamford Bridge will pit them as underdogs against Tottenham and Chelsea respectively.

David Moyes is yet to taste victory with West Ham after three games in charge, and the prospect of facing Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal in their next three games means the Hammers boss will have to rally his side, who have not won in the league since September.

A dramatic 2-2 draw at West Brom helped Newcastle end their four-game losing streak, but it does not get any easier for Rafa Benitez’s men, who are ranked joint-third in the list based on the fact they face Chelsea, Arsenal and leaders Manchester City, among others.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are fifth overall, with Jose Mourinho’s side facing a huge eight days when heading to Arsenal this Saturday before hosting Manchester City on December 10, live on Sky Sports Premier League.

At the other end of the spectrum, Chelsea have the easiest December based on the current table. The reigning champions do not face a single side who occupy a top-nine spot.

Leaders Manchester City face all three sides who sit in the relegation zone ahead of the weekend’s action. Having dropped just two points all campaign, Pep Guardiola’s side can dare to dream of taking their unbeaten run into 2018, but facing teams fighting for their lives, as well as Manchester United and Tottenham, makes it a mammoth task for the odds-on title favourites.

Liverpool have a Merseyside derby to look forward to against Everton on December 10, live on Sky Sports Premier League, while their December 22 trip to Emirates to face Arsenal is also live on Sky. But despite those two tricky fixtures, the Reds statistically have the third-easiest December, as those clashes are offset by games against West Brom, Bournemouth and Swansea.

A trio of teams - Arsenal, Everton and Watford - find themselves locked together in terms of their December fixtures. The Gunners will look to carry their momentum into Saturday’s match at home to Manchester United, while Sam Allardyce is set to head to Anfield for his second match as Everton boss. For Watford, it’s a case of trying to keep touch with the current top four.

Inside Track: AFC Bournemouth

Show/hide article…

It’s a trip to AFC Bournemouth this Sunday! Ahead of the game, we got the lowdown on Cherries from Bournemouth Echo reporter Ned Payne…

How would you sum up Bournemouth’s season so far?

It’s been a mixed bag. They started the season disappointingly, and one win in the first eight Premier League games was a big worry. The victory at Stoke City proved the catalyst for a mini revival, and a run of three straight clean sheets in November certainly helped. But Eddie Howe’s men were well beaten by Burnley this week, so they need to bounce back.

After a good run, how is the mood following that loss to Burnley in midweek?

The manager and the players commented on their disappointment at the performance, and rightly so. It was far from their best this season. But this is a positive group and it will be out of their minds by the time they line up against Southampton.

What sort of a style of play and set-up can Saints fans expect to see from them this weekend?

Bournemouth have used a back three against the Premier League’s big guns this season, but I would expect them to utilise their more-favoured 4-4-1-1 formation. As usual, they will play an attractive passing game.

Who have been the team’s top performers this season?

Nathan Aké is starting to hit his stride, following his permanent move from Chelsea in the summer. His reading of the game is excellent and, if he continues to apply himself, he could go on to be really special. Another former Chelsea player, goalkeeper Asmir Begović, has also done well.

What do you think the keys to the game will be, and who will be the key men for Bournemouth if they are to get a result?

Bournemouth have to make sure they provide their frontmen with enough service, so the creative players will be particularly important. Assuming they keep their places, the likes of Marc Pugh and Jordon Ibe will need to produce their best.

When does the transfer window open? When is Deadline Day?

Show/hide article…

When does the transfer window open? When is Deadline Day?

Clubs will get the chance to buy, sell and loan players again in January - here are all the details about the window…

As the bongs ring out to bring in the New Year, clubs will be allowed to start signing players again as the window reopens at one minute past midnight on January 1, 2018.

Teams will have their fax machines running until January 31 at 11pm, which is when the window slams shut on Deadline Day.

The major European leagues also end their transfer window on the final day of January, meaning clubs in La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A and the Bundesliga will be working to the same timescales as Premier League clubs. Portugal’s window closes on January 2.

In recent windows, we’ve seen what the financial might of Chinese clubs can do in the transfer market, with the likes of Oscar and Ramires swapping England for the Chinese Super League. However, despite the Chinese window being open until February 28, it’s unlikely that we will see similar levels of spending from CSL clubs after a change in rules.

Now, if a transfer fee below £5.3m is paid for a player then the same amount needs to be invested in the club’s youth set-up. If the fee is higher than £5.3m then the club must give the same figure to the state’s football development fund, meaning all foreign transfer fees are now double.

This summer’s window resulted in Premier League teams spending £1.4bn on new acquisitions. As with all winter windows, it is highly unlikely that clubs will get anywhere near that figure, as January is a time for tweaking rather than major overhauls of playing staff. Last January £215m was spent by Premier League clubs.

Sky Sports News will bring you updates throughout January on the latest news and deals on channel 409.

Nathan Redmond: Pep Guardiola was complimenting me, says Southampton forward

Show/hide article…

Southampton forward Nathan Redmond has defended Pep Guardiola after the Manchester City manager was seen having an animated discussion with him at the end of Wednesday’s Premier League game.

Guardiola said he was telling 23-year-old Redmond “how good a player he is” on the pitch following at full-time.

“When one of the world’s best managers compliments you or gives advice in any way, you listen,” said Redmond.

In a post on social media, Redmond added: "Yes, he was very passionate, intense and aggressive - but he was only very complimentary and positive to me.

"He commented on my qualities as a young English player and how he wanted me to attack his team more during the game in a similar way to last season.

"I told him I was doing what my manager had asked me to do in the game. That’s it.

“Nothing negative or offensive was said towards me from Pep and that’s what makes him one of the best managers in world football.”

Redmond scored the opener when Southampton held City to a 1-1 draw at Etihad Stadium last season.

“Last season he destroyed us here,” said Guardiola. "I didn’t know him last season, I realised how good he is.

“[On Wednesday] he could not attack because they defend all the time, but that is what it is.”

WATCH & VOTE: November Premier League goals of the month

Show/hide article…

There were some superb strikes from around the Premier League in November, but which was the best?

We’ve picked some of the most stunning goals from the last month for you to choose from and Rajiv van La Parra kicked things off on November 4 with his strike for Huddersfield against West Brom.

November 18 was a special day for good goals with both Kevin de Bruyne and Mo Salah scoring brilliant strikes, against Leicester and Southampton, respectively.

Xherdan Shaqiri also makes the list for his goal against Crystal Palace on November 25 with Gylfi Sigurdsson’s powerful drive for Everton against Southampton on November 26 also included.

Finally, there are two Leicester inclusions after their 2-1 win against Spurs on Tuesday - with both Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez making the cut - and the shortlist can only be rounded off with Wayne Rooney’s audacious effort to complete his hat-trick for Everton against West Ham on Wednesday.
