Premier League predictions: Lawro v comedian Nish Kumar

Show/hide article…

Sam Allardyce will begin his stint as Everton manager against Huddersfield on Sunday - but how will he get on at Goodison Park?

BBC Sport football expert Mark Lawrenson says: "The Toffees have conceded plenty of goals recently but, if Allardyce can stop that, then they should have enough firepower to pick up some points even before the transfer window opens in January.

“My worry for Huddersfield is that when they concede the first goal they struggle. It can blow their gameplan wide open.”

Lawro is going for a 2-0 Everton win - do you agree? You can make your own predictions now, take on Lawro and other fans, create your own league and try to make it to the top of the table by playing the new-look BBC Sport Predictor game.

Lawro scored 60 points in week 14, which meant he slipped to 2,760th place out of more than 280,000 users.

He will be making a prediction for all 380 top-flight games this season, against a variety of guests.

Lawro takes on comedian Nish Kumar for this weekend’s fixtures.

Kumar - who appears in the new series of ‘Live at the Apollo’ - is a Manchester United fan.

He told BBC Sport: "I became a United fan because I grew up in the tradition Mancunian suburb of Croydon.

"My best memories of United growing up are the Treble in 1999, Eric Cantona for both his goals and his martial art skills, and Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole tearing it up in the Nou Camp.

“In terms of my footballing skills they often say the most limited players become the best managers - so I think I would be an unbelievable manager.”

A correct result (picking a win, draw or defeat) is worth 10 points. The exact score earns 40 points.

All kick-offs 15:00 GMT unless otherwise stated.

I was impressed by the way Newcastle came from 2-0 down to get a point against West Brom on Tuesday - especially because the Magpies had lost their previous four games.

Rafa Benitez’s side will feel like they won that game, but following that by getting something at Stamford Bridge will be a huge ask.

Chelsea did not play well against Swansea on Wednesday but they still got the win in the end, against a side who defend in numbers.

I think they will do the same on Saturday too.

Nish’s prediction: Having watched Newcastle against Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend, I think they will give a good account of themselves and it will be tight, but I still think Chelsea are going to have too much. 2-1

Liverpool were slightly fortunate with their 3-0 win at Stoke in midweek because Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet could easily have been sent off with the score at 1-0.

But Jurgen Klopp’s side made sure of victory late on when Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score twice.

That kind of strength in depth they have in their squad will be very useful in the coming weeks when the games come thick and fast.

Brighton are another of my old teams and it is great to see them taking on Liverpool in the top flight again for the first time since 1983.

The Seagulls will sit in even though they are at home, which will make things difficult for the Reds, but I am still expecting them to come out on top.

I am expecting Sam Allardyce to make a good start as Everton manager.

Toffees caretaker manager David Unsworth finished off with a really good win over West Ham on Wednesday, with Wayne Rooney taking the headlines with his hat-trick.

And you just know Sam will do absolutely fine there. His way of looking at it will be ‘right, we start from the back’ and he will make sure he improves his defence first.

Huddersfield were beaten heavily by Arsenal on Wednesday but the good thing about them is they will not dwell on that.

In a very Allardyce kind of way, Terriers manager David Wagner will identify the fixtures where they have to pick up points.

I am talking about games like this one, not against Manchester City or the Gunners.

Huddersfield will be tough to break down, but I think Allardyce will find a way.

Leicester manager Claude Puel continues to impress, and the Foxes’ win over Tottenham means he has now taken eight points from his first five games in charge.

The Clarets just keep rolling on, though.

They are a team with a lot of talent and, at the very least, they give you everything - which is so important because it means they can play poorly, and still nick a result.

Stoke are still hovering above the relegation zone after their defeat by Liverpool, but Swansea are in much deeper trouble.

Swans boss Paul Clement must decide whether to stick with his usual defensive approach away from home - look to limit Stoke and play for a draw.

Or does he go for it a bit more because the Potters are in a sticky patch and confidence is low?

I think we will see a bit of a reaction from Stoke, though, which is why I am backing them to win.

Nish’s prediction: I am not banking on this being the game of the season, but I think Stoke will shade it. 1-0

Tottenham have thrown in a couple of iffy performances recently, with the latest coming in the first half of their defeat by Leicester on Tuesday.

Some of Spurs’ stars have not hit the heights of last season, but at least they have good memories of Vicarage Road - when they took the Hornets apart here on New Year’s Day.

It could be an open game which would suit Tottenham, although I think it will be a lot closer than their last visit.

Nish’s prediction: This is exactly the sort of game Spurs will slip up in. 0-0

Wherever he has gone, new West Brom manager Alan Pardew has generally done a good job.

He is a good coach and a good appointment, and I am expecting him to steer the Baggies out of trouble.

Pardew is up against his old club on Saturday, and so is Palace boss Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson just keeps on picking up points here and there and it will not be long until the Eagles are off the bottom of the table - but I think Pardew will come out on top in his first game in charge.

Nish’s prediction: I have been very bullish saying Hodgson is going to turn it around for Palace, so I have to back them. 2-1

This is a huge game, between two sides in the top six who are in good form, so you know what I am going for here - a 1-1 draw.

The Gunners, in particular, are flying but I am still waiting for the moment where they slip up.

United are on a good run too of course, but it is the sort of fixture where you look at the way Arsenal are playing and think Jose Mourinho would take a point.

That is what I think he will play for and I don’t think Mourinho will care if a draw means Manchester City extend their lead at the top of the table.

He will look at this game in isolation, and see a point as a good result.

Nish’s prediction: I would love to say this is going to be a really open, blockbuster of a game - but Mourinho is going to park the bus, and park a couple of tanks in front of it. 0-0

Southampton did well against Manchester City in midweek, and it took Raheem Sterling’s 96th-minute winner to beat them.

But Saints just sat in at Etihad Stadium and did not really have to worry about trying to get forward, other than at set-pieces where they were a threat.

This game is very different for Mauricio Pellegrino’s side - I think we will see them with a more attacking mindset, and I am backing them to leave with the points.

Bournemouth have been on a good run but their defeat by Burnley on Wednesday showed that well-organised teams can turn them over.

West Ham collapsed against Everton in midweek, and they are another team that needs to see December as a kind of damage-limitation period, and then try to solve their problems in the January transfer window.

Their forthcoming fixtures are not exactly helpful from that point of view, though, starting at Etihad Stadium and then with home games against Chelsea and Arsenal.

Southampton and Huddersfield have shown in the past week how teams can make it difficult for Manchester City, even if Pep Guardiola’s side still beat them both in the end.

I don’t think the Hammers have got the personnel to do that, though.

From the last round of games, Lawro got four correct results, with one perfect score, from 10 matches, for a total of 70 points.

He beat Tailenders host Felix White, who got three correct results, but with no perfect scores, giving him 30 points.

*Foster and Cram both provided predictions on week one, but only Foster’s score contributes to the guest total.

**Anderson and Moeen both provided predictions on week nine, but only Anderson’s score contributes to the guest total.

Lawro’s worst score: 40 points (week four v Umenyiora and Bell, and week five v Non Stanford)

REVEALED: What Pep Guardiola REALLY said to Nathan Redmond

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond was left stunned by the Pep Guardiola lecture that marked the end of Manchester City’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Southampton on Wednesday night, Sportsmail can reveal.

Still reeling from Raheem Sterling’s late winner, the Saints winger was suddenly on the receiving end of an astonishing rant from City’s manager as the pair walked off the Etihad pitch.

Guardiola prodded Redmond several times, tapped the 23-year-old’s chest and told him in animated terms how much he admired him and what he needed to improve on.

A source close to the England player told Sportsmail: ‘Pep said, “You’re a good player, you destroyed us last season and I’ve been watching you ever since. But you need to play with more confidence, with your head up. You need to believe in yourself”.’

Redmond took to social media on Thursday night to expand on what Guardiola had said. ‘Yes he was very passionate, intense and aggressive but he was only very complimentary and positive to me,’ he said.

'He commented on my qualities as a young English player and how he wanted me to attack his team more during the game in a similar way to last season.

'I told him I was doing what my manager had asked. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less.

‘Nothing negative or offensive was said towards me from Pep. Losing the game the way we did after working so hard for 90 minutes was very disappointing, but when one of the world’s best managers compliments you or gives advice in any way, you listen.’

After the match, Redmond returned to the Southampton dressing room to relay what had happened to team-mate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who was at Bayern Munich when Guardiola was there. Hojbjerg told Redmond such behaviour was not unusual and, if Guardiola liked a player, it did not matter whether they played for his side.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola said he told Redmond ‘how good a player he is’.

He added: ‘Southampton have some super-talented players. Redmond is so good one against one. But they didn’t want to play, they were time-wasting from the ninth minute. I just wanted them to play.’

Guardiola expects to find out on Friday if he faces FA action over the confrontation.

The governing body charged Chelsea manager Antonio Conte on Thursday night after he was sent to the stands in the 1-0 victory over Swansea on Wednesday.

The Italian was dismissed by referee Neil Swarbrick for protesting to fourth official Lee Mason when Swansea were awarded a goal-kick.

He apologised to Swarbrick and Mason after the match and admitted he had made a ‘mistake’. Conte has until 6pm on Tuesday to respond to the charge. He faces an £8,000 fine, but not a touchline ban.

FAN VIEW: Guardiola’s Southampton comments are ridiculous

Show/hide article…

As a Southampton fan it was gut-wrenching. Ninety-plus minutes of sheer hard-work, determination and organisation, only to be defeated by a moment of simply undeniable class.

But after taking a step back from the drama of it all, I could see that it was a fantastic battle between two sides with two entirely different approaches.

Southampton could walk off that pitch with their heads held high, despite City leaving as the deserved winners.

But following the post match press conferences, the game had suddenly been given a whole new narrative, as Pep Guardiola proceeded to blast Southampton for their negative tactics and time-wasting.

‘They didn’t want to play. We were the only team who tried to win. We deserved it by far’ said Guardiola.

The Spaniard then went on to slander Southampton for having ‘10 men behind the ball’ and that ‘their striker was man-marking Fernandinho.’

Now at this point I must confess that I myself am a huge admirer of Guardiola, and certainly not an advocate of time-wasting.

But these comments regarding Southampton’s tactics are quite frankly ridiculous.

Guardiola might say that defending deep with the aim of rarely breaking forward is unfair, and that’s reasonable enough.

But I can guarantee you that if we asked Guardiola whether it’s unfair to recruit world class talents like a hacked Football Manager save, and spend over £200M on building a new backline, he’d shoot your question down before you could even finish your sentence.

The point I’m trying to make is that whilst both are frustrating and unfair to others, they are perfectly legal in the game, and that’s all part of football.

Mauricio Pellegrino didn’t come off the field lambasting the ludicrous amount of money that Guardiola’s spent, so how is it any different that Guardiola moaned about the way Southampton tried to combat his side?

Contrary to what Guardiola may believe, there’s no one way to play football, so please don’t kick up a fuss because we gave you a challenge.

It’s worth noting at this point that the teams who caused City the most frustration this season – Wolves, Huddersfield, and now the Saints – all conceded possession and deployed a deep block.

The post-match comments would leave anyone to believe that Southampton posed no threat in the oppositions box, but this was far from the truth.

Oriol Romeu’s goal was worked wonderfully, Wesley Hoedt cannoned a header off the crossbar, and Maya Yoshida missed an open goal.

However, I’m under no illusion that Southampton played a very defensive style of football.

But is it really any wonder when we had to be wary of Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling charging at our defence, let alone a fresh legged David Silva who’d just been substituted on.

Of course Guardiola would love everyone to push forward and go toe-to-toe with City – he’d simply watch on with joy as his team proceeded to wipe the floor with their sorry opponent, before praising them in the post match presser for giving it a ‘good go.’

Anyone knows that gifting space to any of City’s world class forwards is the difference between having a chance of picking up a result at the Etihad, and being completely and utterly humiliated.

Manchester City are an outstanding football team, and any mid-table side naive enough to think that they can beat them at their own game will simply be picked off at will.

The style of this piece was exactly the route that I didn’t want to go down following such a thrilling game.

Manchester City were an absolute joy to watch, and as far as I’m concerned, each one of those Southampton players can go into their next fixture with their head held high.

Only last week Guardiola stated that there is no copy and paste in football with regards to football tactics, due to every squad boasting different strengths and weaknesses.

So in the same way that Guardiola deployed an incredibly attacking side to secure all three points, Southampton fielded a strong and resilient defensive unit to frustrate and battle.

There’s no right or wrong in how a team wishes to pick up their points, especially when it’s against the most expensive side in Premier League history.

Nathan Redmond defends Pep Guardiola over heated on-field discussion

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond moved to defend Pep Guardiola on Thursday night over the Manchester City manager’s heated discussion with the Southampton forward.

Redmond insisted he had no problem with the way Guardiola aggressively confronted him at the end of City’s dramatic late 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, which restored the Premier League leaders eight-point cushion at the top of the table.

Guardiola had thrust an arm around Redmond’s neck and then jabbed him in the chest as he shouted at the 23-year-old. The Catalan later claimed he had been complimenting Redmond before launching into a diatribe about Southampton’s negative tactics and time-wasting.

And Redmond, who angrily ridiculed one newspaper claims that Guardiola had called him a “w-----”, said the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach had told him “how he wanted me to attack his team more during the game in a similar way to last season” when Southampton drew 1-1 at the Etihad.

Redmond said he had responded by telling Guardiola “I was doing what my manager [Mauricio Pellegrino] had asked me to do in the game”.

The Football Association were deliberating on Thursday over whether Guardiola should face any disciplinary action for the way he confronted Redmond after wildly celebrating City’s win. A decision is expected tomorrow but Redmond was supportive of Guardiola.

Nathan Redmond explains ‘passionate’ Pep Guardiola outburst

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond says Pep Guardiola was complimenting and not offending him during the Manchester City manager’s fiery outburst towards the Southampton striker.

The pair were captured on camera exchanging words in a heated exchange with Guardiola gesturing wildly in Redmond’s face at the end of Manchester City’s dramatic 2-1 win over the Saints on Wednesday.

Despite later insisting he was telling the forward how good a player he was, a report claimed the Spaniard was offensive towards Redmond - but the 23-year-old insists that was not the case.

Taking to Twitter, Redmond wrote: "Yes he was very passionate, intense and aggressive but he was only very complimentary and positive to me.

"He commented on my qualities as a young English player and how he wanted me to attack his team more during the game in a similar way to last season.

"I told him I was doing what my manager had asked me to do in the game.

"That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less.

“Nothing negative or offensive was said towards me from Pep and that’s what makes him one of the best managers in world football.”

“Losing the game the way we did in the last kick of the game after working so hard for 90+ minutes I was very disappointed, but when one of the world’s best managers complements you or gives advice in any way, you listen.”

Raheem Sterling scored a sensational 96th-minute winner to send his side eight points clear at the top of the Premier League, setting a new club record of 12 Premier League wins in a row.

Meanwhile Southampton sit 11th in the table with three defeats and one win from their last four games.

Nathan Redmond: Guardiola ‘only complimentary’ in postmatch chat

Show/hide article…

Southampton winger Nathan Redmond says Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was “only very complimentary and positive” following their bizarre confrontation at the end of the Premier League clash on Wednesday night.

Guardiola appeared to to gesticulate at the player in an aggressive manner following City’s 2-1 victory after a 96th-minute Raheem Sterling strike.

However, the Catalan explained in his postmatch news conference that he was simply letting Redmond know what an admirer he was of his talents and that he was wasted having to defend.

And in a statement posted on Twitter on Thursday, Redmond, 23, confirmed that Guardiola had not said anything negative to him.

“Yes he was very passionate, intense and aggressive but he was only very complimentary and positive to me,” Redmond said. "He commented on my qualities as a young English player and how he wanted me to attack his team more during the game in a similar way to last season.

"I told him I was doing what my manager had asked me to do in the game. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less.

"Nothing negative or offensive was said towards me from Pep and that’s what makes him one of the best managers in world football.

“Losing the game we did in the last kick of the game after working so hard for 90-plus minutes, I was very disappointed but when one of the world’s best managers compliments you or gives advice in any way, you listen.”

There have been calls for Guardiola to be charged with improper conduct but that is only likely to happen if the incident is mentioned in the referee’s report.

The City boss also jumped on the pitch to celebrate Sterling’s late strike that maintained City’s eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League. He apologised for going onto the pitch but admitted he couldn’t control his emotions.

“I said [to the referee] I apologise because I couldn’t control it, I was so happy like all the fans and players,” Guardiola told a news conference.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was sent off during a 1-0 win over Southampton in September after encroaching onto the pitch. However, the Portuguese was not charged by the FA over the incident.

Who has the toughest December fixtures in the Premier League?

Show/hide article…

How difficult are your club’s Premier League fixtures this December? From toughest to easiest, we rank each team’s schedule ahead of this month’s action.

Sky Sports Premier League will bring you 19 live games this December, and with seven rounds of fixtures on their way before the year’s end, struggling clubs have the opportunity to turn their fortunes around - though for some it could become a month to forget.

Before December’s Premier League action kicks off this weekend, who does have the toughest run? Michael Hincks ranks each team’s run-in to 2018 based on the current average league position of the clubs they are up against…

With matches against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United to come, Southampton statistically have the toughest month ahead. The Saints have only won one of their last five league matches, and Mauricio Pellegrino will target a morale-boosting victory over Bournemouth this weekend before their tricky run begins.

Brighton are not far behind, with five of their seven matches against top-half opposition. The Seagulls host Liverpool this Saturday, while trips to Wembley and Stamford Bridge will pit them as underdogs against Tottenham and Chelsea respectively.

David Moyes is yet to taste victory with West Ham after three games in charge, and the prospect of facing Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal in their next three games means the Hammers boss will have to rally his side, who have not won in the league since September.

A dramatic 2-2 draw at West Brom helped Newcastle end their four-game losing streak, but it does not get any easier for Rafa Benitez’s men, who are ranked joint-third in the list based on the fact they face Chelsea, Arsenal and leaders Manchester City, among others.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are fifth overall, with Jose Mourinho’s side facing a huge eight days when heading to Arsenal this Saturday before hosting Manchester City on December 10, live on Sky Sports Premier League.

At the other end of the spectrum, Chelsea have the easiest December based on the current table. The reigning champions do not face a single side who occupy a top-nine spot.

Leaders Manchester City face all three sides who sit in the relegation zone ahead of the weekend’s action. Having dropped just two points all campaign, Pep Guardiola’s side can dare to dream of taking their unbeaten run into 2018, but facing teams fighting for their lives, as well as Manchester United and Tottenham, makes it a mammoth task for the odds-on title favourites.

Liverpool have a Merseyside derby to look forward to against Everton on December 10, live on Sky Sports Premier League, while their December 22 trip to Emirates to face Arsenal is also live on Sky. But despite those two tricky fixtures, the Reds statistically have the third-easiest December, as those clashes are offset by games against West Brom, Bournemouth and Swansea.

A trio of teams - Arsenal, Everton and Watford - find themselves locked together in terms of their December fixtures. The Gunners will look to carry their momentum into Saturday’s match at home to Manchester United, while Sam Allardyce is set to head to Anfield for his second match as Everton boss. For Watford, it’s a case of trying to keep touch with the current top four.

Inside Track: AFC Bournemouth

Show/hide article…

It’s a trip to AFC Bournemouth this Sunday! Ahead of the game, we got the lowdown on Cherries from Bournemouth Echo reporter Ned Payne…

How would you sum up Bournemouth’s season so far?

It’s been a mixed bag. They started the season disappointingly, and one win in the first eight Premier League games was a big worry. The victory at Stoke City proved the catalyst for a mini revival, and a run of three straight clean sheets in November certainly helped. But Eddie Howe’s men were well beaten by Burnley this week, so they need to bounce back.

After a good run, how is the mood following that loss to Burnley in midweek?

The manager and the players commented on their disappointment at the performance, and rightly so. It was far from their best this season. But this is a positive group and it will be out of their minds by the time they line up against Southampton.

What sort of a style of play and set-up can Saints fans expect to see from them this weekend?

Bournemouth have used a back three against the Premier League’s big guns this season, but I would expect them to utilise their more-favoured 4-4-1-1 formation. As usual, they will play an attractive passing game.

Who have been the team’s top performers this season?

Nathan Aké is starting to hit his stride, following his permanent move from Chelsea in the summer. His reading of the game is excellent and, if he continues to apply himself, he could go on to be really special. Another former Chelsea player, goalkeeper Asmir Begović, has also done well.

What do you think the keys to the game will be, and who will be the key men for Bournemouth if they are to get a result?

Bournemouth have to make sure they provide their frontmen with enough service, so the creative players will be particularly important. Assuming they keep their places, the likes of Marc Pugh and Jordon Ibe will need to produce their best.
