Saints awarded Premier League Equality Standard

Show/hide article...

The club’s equality group recently submitted its evidence from the past year to a Premier League panel made up of experts, including Garth Crooks, who was particularly impressed by “the professional data and evidence-driven approach” and “the attention to detail in following up on fan feedback”.

Following the award of the Preliminary Equality Standard in 2016, the club has worked tirelessly to achieve the Intermediate Equality Standard and join an elite group of seven clubs to have reached this level.

A lot of the work that led to the award was carried out under the One March banner and includes:

• The installation of a Changing Places facility at St Mary’s Stadium and other improvements to accessibility

• The development of eight key milestones for improving diversity across Southampton Football Club

• The participation of staff in unconscious bias training

• The collaboration of the equality team with partnering organisations and the associated next steps

• The celebration of diversity during our One March week and Rainbow Laces match

• The introduction of the Mx honorific across our online platforms

• Ongoing work with the Saints Disabled Supporters Association

• Maintaining and improving robust reporting procedures and policies, including the introduction of our One March text number (60060)

Ali Wallace, equality and diversity coordinator at Southampton, said: “Achieving the Intermediate Equality Standard is the culmination of 18 months of work and action to promote inclusion at the club. It is a reflection of the commitment of the equality team and other staff members we have collaborated with to develop the high-quality submission required.”

Managing director Toby Steele, who is a member of the equality team and led the panel presentation, commented: “A big thanks from me to everyone in the equality team and those across the club who gave their assistance during initiatives over the past 18 months. It’s been a team effort and this work is an incredibly rewarding part of what we do at the club.”

What does the Premier League Equality Standard Intermediate Level mean?

The Premier League Equality Standard was revised by the Premier League in 2015 to replace, and build on, Kick it Out’s Equality Standard for Professional Football Clubs.

The standard covers all areas of a club’s activity, including its role as an employer, and the work of the Community Trust or equivalent (Saints Foundation). To achieve the intermediate level, Southampton Football Club has:

• Committed to achieving equality across all areas of operation

• Shown awareness of its current profile and position in terms of equality and its policies seek to advance equality

• Created a stadium free from incidents of discrimination, abuse and harassment

• Demonstrated that it is implementing and reviewing the Equality Action Plan and has collected updated profile data

• Ensured its strategies, plans, programmes, activities and key policies consider the impact on people who share protected characteristics

• Advocated equality and improved and developed through consultation with key partners, stakeholders and under-represented groups

The club will now be working to achieve the coveted Advanced Equality Standard by Autumn 2019.

Jaïdi previews PL Cup clash

Show/hide article...

Saints have begun this year's competition strongly, with wins over both Blackburn and tonight's opponents, and will solidify their position at the top of the group if they're able to secure another victory at Staplewood tomorrow evening.

Praising his young side's developing maturity, Jaïdi has revealed how the Under-23s' renewed focus has initiated an upturn in recent results.

"The boys have showed their mature side in recent games," Jaïdi commented. "The hard work we've put in since the beginning of the season is starting to reap rewards.

"You just need one or two to start picking up the finer details and that effects the team as a whole. We still have younger players that need to continue working, keep the work ethic and concentration levels at a maximum.

"The way we're playing is always an attacking style, nice to watch. We have pace up front and it's hard for defenders to deal with that tempo.

"But we need to keep concentration levels for the whole 90. We create a lot of opportunities that we don't always execute, so that's something we're focussing on.

"The cup is a competition we want to progress in, as high as possible. There will be some rotation, to keep it fresh but we try to keep the core group the same. Keep the winning ongoing."

GW27 Ones to watch: James Ward-Prowse

Show/hide article...

The Scout is selecting five Fantasy Premier League players set to make an impact in Gameweek 27.

The Southampton midfielder is the most in-form player in Fantasy.

Ward-Prowse has scored 37 points over the last four Gameweeks at 9.3 points per match (ppm).

Not even the game's top-scoring player can better that, with Mohamed Salah (£10.4m) averaging 9.0ppm over the same period.

Three goals, two assists and eight bonus points have arrived over his last four matches, with Ward-Prowse thriving from more pitch time.

Indeed, he is enjoying his most consistent run in the Southampton XI, starting seven of the last eight matches in all competitions.

Pinpoint deliveries, both from set-pieces and open play, are key to his appeal.

The midfielder has supplied 10 successful crosses and corners over the last four Gameweeks, a tally matched only by Chris Brunt (£5.0m).

Ward-Prowse's goal threat has also become a factor.

He has fired 10 shots with four finding the target over the last four matches, at least double that of any team-mate on both counts.

Despite his recent flurry of points, Ward-Prowse remains overlooked in Fantasy.

He ranks only seventh for transfers in among midfielders ahead of Gameweek 27 and is owned by just 2.3% of managers.

That makes him an ideal differential ahead of a St Mary's Stadium encounter with Liverpool on Sunday.

The Reds have struggled on the road, recording only three clean sheets from 13 away matches.

They could be the latest to fall victim to Ward-Prowse's supply and eye for goal.

Deliver in Gameweek 27, and the Saints midfielder will finally soar as a target for FPL managers.

Virgil van Dijk a future Liverpool captain, say Phil Thompson and Matt Le Tissier

Show/hide article...

Virgil van Dijk has the potential to be a future Liverpool captain, according to Phil Thompson and Matt Le Tissier.

The 26-year-old, who became the world's most expensive defender after joining Liverpool for £75m in January, joined a list of players including Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane and Dejan Lovren who have swapped St Mary's for Anfield in recent seasons.

Le Tissier and Thompson believe the deal suited all parties as Van Dijk prepares to return to Southampton with Liverpool on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

Thompson believes that while it may take until next season to see Van Dijk's true potential, the Netherlands international can go on to be a captain at the club.

"Dare I say it, he looks a future captain material," Thompson told Sky Sports. "The way he plays, with his presence, I'd like to think he could grow into that role in another 12 months.

"He needs to be a better organiser, which will come with experience, because you need to have that ability to make sure everybody is organised, even when you're not having a good game yourself."

Le Tissier is in agreement that the potential is there if Van Dijk can improve his concentration, suggesting he is one of the Premier League's best defenders.

"He has captaincy potential, but there's also part of him which just switches off when it is a bit too easy, which if he's going to be a captain he has to eradicate from his game," Le Tissier said.

"There's definitely more to come from him. Before his injury he was right up there with the best centre backs in the Premier League, although Toby Alderweireld is perhaps a fraction better all-round defender because of that consistency."

After recovering from the ankle injury which ruled him out of the second half of last season, the Van Dijk missed much of Southampton's pre-season as he trained alone after insisting on leaving the club.

As a result, Thompson thinks it will take some time for the player to get up to speed.

"I agree with the comment that we'll see the best of him next season when he's had a full pre-season after his injuries and his head not being in the right place for so long," Thompson said.

"I think he's absolutely fantastic when at his best, a Rolls Royce of a defender, reading the game very well and certainly a huge presence at 6'4'' with plenty of speed."

Van Dijk's quality was put to the test on Super Sunday when he came up against the Premier League's leading goalscorer Harry Kane. The Netherlands international had seemingly helped weather a second-half storm from the visitors, only for a late foul on Erik Lamela to allow Spurs to snatch a point from the spot.

"I thought he was quite exceptional against Tottenham with the way they played Kane, who had one of his quietest games," Thompson added. "He was top class in that first half. In the second half he was more under pressure and was unlucky as he didn't see Lamela."

However, while believing the deal suits both parties, Le Tissier warns Liverpool need more than Van Dijk if they are to fix their backline, which has conceded seven goals more than any of the rest of the Premier League's top five.

"I think the deal suits both parties as Liverpool desperately needed a defender and we (Southampton) got a world-record fee for a defender," said Le Tissier. "In terms of the price I think it is pretty good business.

"Van Dijk won't be a one-man fix for their defensive errors alone and [Dejan] Lovren has escaped a bit of criticism for his error which led to Kane's first penalty because of the controversy.

"I think if Liverpool have realistic ambitions of the title then I think they need a better centre-back partner and goalkeeper. Joe Gomez has the potential to be a top defender but Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan don't look up to it."

Liverpool will be hoping to take all three points on Sunday as the battle for a top-four finish continues, but one thing that looks certain is the frosty reception awaiting Van Dijk when he returns to St Mary's.

"I wouldn't expect it to be that great to be honest," added Le Tissier. "I've not seen too many players who have basically gone on strike to force a move be rewarded with a warm reception, so I'd suggest he doesn't expect too much appreciation on Sunday."
