Slattery features in big England win

Show/hide article…

Slattery was introduced as a 54th-minute sub in France for Neil Dewsnip’s team, which is a mixture of players from the under-18 to under-20 age groups.

England were already 3-1 ahead when the Saints midfielder was brought on for Ronaldo Vieira, after two goals from Harvey Barnes and a strike from George Hirst.

Hirst added another shortly after Slattery’s introduction, before David Brooks struck the fifth.

First then completed his hat-trick in the 70th minute, ahead of Martell Taylor-Crossdale completing the scoring shortly before full-time.

The result maintains England’s perfect start, after their 1-0 win over Angola in their opening group match.

They will finish their group stage campaign next Tuesday, when they face Japan, as they look to advance to the semi-finals.

Southampton slap huge valuation on big-guns’ target Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton have slapped a whopping £70million price-tag on their sought-after skipper Virgil van Dijk .

Liverpool and Manchester City are among the clubs battling to sign central defender Van Dijk, who has also been linked with Arsenal and champions Chelsea , in the upcoming transfer window. But the Saints are ready to play hard-ball to keep the 25-year-old Dutchman, who only signed a new six-year contract last summer.

Van Dijk is currently rehabilitating after missing the final four months of the season with an ankle injury.

The former Celtic star is understood to be relaxed about his situation and has so far not informed Saints of a desire to leave after two years.

Southampton have become a selling club in recent summers – but it’s a tag owner Katharina Liebherr is keen to shake off.

The club believe Van Dijk’s value will only increase the longer he stays with them.

Speaking last month, chairman Ralph Krueger said: “We do not need to sell any players. Whether the ownership changes or not, it is not going to change our strategic position.

“We have the backing of Katharina and/or any potential change which we as a management team feel extremely comfortable with.

“We have a strategy which is being fine-tuned, but the base is in place. We are pre-positioned for the transfer window and we do not have to sell any player. That will be our decision and whether it is in the best interests of the club or not.”

Stephens doesn’t “want to see anyone leaving” as Van Dijk rumours hot up

Show/hide article…

JACK Stephens is desperate not to see anyone leave Saints this summer as the whirl of speculation regarding the future of Virgil van Dijk reaches fever pitch.

As reported by the Daily Echo, interest in talismanic defender Van Dijk is high, with Liverpool preparing to start the race for his much sought after signature.

But Saints are preparing to dig their heels in as they look to keep the Dutchman, who also has Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City after him.

“We don’t want any of the boys leaving,” said Stephens.

“We’ve got a really good group of players here and a really close changing room.

“It’s a really good place to come in to every day, so from my point of view I don’t want to see anyone leaving and hopefully we don’t.

“But that’s the way football goes sometimes and if it does then we have to react and keep moving forward.”

The 23-year-old central defender believes that Saints could “bridge the gap” between them and Everton next season if the squad is kept together.

The Toffees finished 15 points ahead, but just one place above of eighth placed Saints in the Premier League last term.

The England Under-21 international reckons that the St Mary’s outfit have the quality in their ranks to compete with the Merseysiders, with consistency key to catching up Ronald Koeman’s men.

“You look at the games like Stoke, Hull at home, West Ham, they’re the type of games we want to be winning [to catch Everton],” he said.

“There’s not a massive gap between us and Everton, they’ve just been fairly consistent over the season. They’ve not got anywhere near the top six either.

“They’re firmly in seventh, but there’s not a massive gap.

“It’s just a few tweaks here and there and we’ll bridge the gap.”

Reflecting on the season just gone, he added: “If you look at some of results that we’ve had we could have had more points and be closer to Everton in seventh and maybe above them.

“Apart from Everton, this league’s very difficult when the top six perform so well and spend so much it’s difficult to break that.

“So we’re disappointed that we’re not closer to Everton or above them in seventh place.

“But we got to a cup final, which was fantastic for the club. It was disappointing to lose but it was a great occasion and it’s given all the boys and everyone at the club the motivation to try and get back there and win a trophy for this club. As for the league it’s mixed feelings because we feel we’ve done well. Eighth is a respectable position but we wanted more.”

Davis set for New Zealand clash

Show/hide article…

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis is set for action with Northern Ireland tonight, as they host New Zealand in a friendly.

Davis, who skippers his country as well as being club captain with Saints, is set to lead Michael O’Neill’s team at Windsor Park (7.45pm BST).

The game acts as a final tune-up ahead of Northern Ireland’s big World Cup qualifier away to Azerbaijan, on Saturday 10th June.

The Irish are currently second in Group C, with ten points from their first five games, behind only world champions Germany at the halfway stage.

Davis is looking forward to this evening’s clash with New Zealand.

“We don’t get the opportunity to come back here too often and play,” he said.

"There’s going to be a good crowd at Windsor Park, so we want to put on a good performance first and foremost for them, and carry the momentum into the game against Azerbaijan.

“You want to make the most of these opportunities, we don’t get too many days together throughout the year and the players will be desperate to impress the manager.”

Steven Davis says Southampton should build their team around Virgil van Dijk

Steven Davis has urged Southampton to build their team around Virgil van Dijk despite continued transfer interest in the defender.

Sky Sports News HQ revealed yesterday that the south coast club are wanting more than £50m for the Netherlands international with Manchester City and Pep Guardiola known to be targeting defensive reinforcements.

Chelsea and Liverpool are also believed to be weighing up a potential move for the 25-year-old, who hasn’t featured for Southampton since injuring his ankle in January’s Premier League fixture against Leicester.

But Davis hopes Southampton will be able to keep hold of Van Dijk and believes it would send a statement of their intent should the Dutchman remain at St Mary’s.

“He is a huge player,” Davis told Sky Sports. "Obviously a huge miss when you get injured in the second half of the season.

“He is a top quality player - hopefully we can do our best to keep hold of him and build the team around him.”

He added: “It will be a huge statement. We all know the qualities that he has got. He is still at an age where he is going to get better so we know there will be teams looking at him such is his quality but hopefully we can keep hold of him and go and have a strong season.”

Van Dijk joined Southampton from Celtic on a five-year contract in September 2015 for a fee in the region of £11.5m.

He has gone on to make 55 appearances in the Premier League, but he only featured in 21 league games last season after his campaign was brought to a premature halt through ligament damage to his foot which required surgery.

Neil Lennon, the Hibernian manager, signed Van Dijk from Groningen in 2013 when he was in charge of Celtic and believes the centre-back can go right to the top.

“He could play in any club side in Europe now,” Lennon told Sky Sports. "He has got everything you want in a modern day centre half - he is powerful, quick, technically brilliant, reads the game well and superb in the air.

“It doesn’t surprise me all the clubs are coming now. It’s just surprising they have waited so long.”
