Klopp ‘eyes another Southampton star to give Keita the perfect midfield partner’

Show/hide article…

The centre of Liverpool’s midfield could have a completely new look next season as Jurgen Klopp has reportedly identified the perfect partner for the incoming Naby Keita.

Unsurprisingly, the player on Klopp’s wishlist is another Southampton star - this time, Mario Lemina.

French publication L’Equipe , is reporting that “Liverpool Loves Mario Lemina,” suggesting that Arsenal - who tracked him in the summer - have now dropped their interest.

They go on to say that Klopp in now the front-runner in the chase to secure his man.

The German, it is said, wants to partner former Juventus star Lemina alongside the incoming Keita, who is set to join from RB Leipzig in summer.

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore believes the Reds should make an offer to Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon, writes Liam Prenderville .

The 40-year-old has been with the Italian side since 2001 and may well call it a day at the end of the current campaign.

But Mirror Football columnist Collymore thinks he still has plenty to offer and could make an impact at Anfield.

The goalkeeping position has been an issue for some time with Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet vying for the No.1 spot.

Karius has the nod as things stand but Collymore said: "What Liverpool need now is a top quality goalkeeper.

Virgil van Dijk reveals the big difference between Liverpool and Southampton and admits ‘I needed to step up my game’

"When people say what type of goalkeeper, whether young or old, I would say go for one with experience.

"A player like Petr Cech or Joe Hart, who has won the Premier League, can bring that experience into the dressing room.

"Gigi Buffon is talking about retiring at the end of the season.

“Why not go and make him a megabucks offer?”

Liverpool are looking to tie down Mohamed Salah to a ‘bumper’ new deal as they look to ward off interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid , writes Ben Rebuck .

The Egyptian has taken the Premier League by storm this season, having scored 23 times in just 27 games as the Reds look to secure a European place for next season.

After signing from Roma last summer for £31.5million, Salah has already attracted attention from footballing super-powers, with Real Madrid reportedly interested in signing the 25-year-old.

Madrid have made no secret they’re looking into a long-term replacement for the evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo, and see the Anfield front-man as a viable option.

According to the Daily Express , Liverpool want to offer him a huge new contract in the hope it will ward off any potential bids for their number one man.

This could trigger a series of deals being signed as it’s also reported that Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are close to putting pen-to-paper.

Tottenham plot move for Dortmund’s Reus; Liverpool in for Lemina

Show/hide article…

Clubs are slowly turning their eyes toward the summer window, and Transfer Talk has the updates on all the latest rumours.

Tottenham will chase an audacious move this summer for Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus, according to the Mirror.

The 28-year-old has been plagued by injuries at the Westfalenstadion and is stalling on a new contract with just a year remaining on his current deal.

The Germany international is back and firing, though, with two goals in his last two starts.

Liverpool have also shown interest, with Jurgen Klopp eager to reunite with Reus, a player he struck up a successful relationship with during his time in Germany.

Liverpool will return once more to Southampton this summer with L’Equipe claiming Mario Lemina is a target for Klopp.

Emre Can is likely to walk on a free transfer this summer, with Juventus keen, meaning a new midfielder will likely be signed, despite the impending arrival of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig.

Lemina has impressed since joining Saints from Juventus and would likely form a partnership with Keita.

A contract until 2022 means Saints will be able to command a huge profit on the £18 million invested in the Gabon international in 2017, but that will not dissuade Liverpool having already paid a world-record fee for Virgil Van Dijk in January.

Victor Wanyama’s situation at Tottenham is being monitored by Liverpool and Manchester United, claims the Mirror.

The Kenya international has three years remaining on his deal but is pushing for an extension after an impressive season under Mauricio Pochettino.

Jose Mourinho is in the market for a new midfielder, while Wanyama could emerge as a replacement for Can, who is set to exit Anfield when his contract expires.

Antonio Conte is a known admirer, though Chelsea’s interest has yet to develop.

Arsenal have highlighted the three areas to improve their team next season, the Mirror says. There’s a crisis brewing at the Emirates, with Arsene Wenger under serious pressure following two humblings at the hands of Manchester City inside four days.

The Gunners want to sign a new goalkeeper, a new centre-midfielder and a new defensive-midfielder.

Head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is scouring the market to identify targets, with an emphasis on value due to a lack of funds.

The team’s new £200m kit deal will not kick in until 2019, meaning the likes of Jonny Evans, available at just £3m should West Brom be relegated, will likely be pursued.

  • Chelsea are ready to bring Frank Lampard back to Stamford Bridge, with the former England international ready to try his hand at coaching.

The Sun claims the Blues will add the 39-year-old to the coaching staff no matter who is in charge next season, having spent 18 months studying for his UEFA “A” license.

  • West Ham are lining up a move for Harry Arter, with the Express claiming the Hammers will table a third offer for the Bournemouth star worth £10m.

David Moyes was eager to bring the Cherries midfielder to the London Stadium in January but had two bids, with the highest worth £8m, rejected.

The Premier League’s greatest ever hat-tricks… the top 10 is here

Show/hide article…

After a week of counting down the best ever Premier League hat-tricks, it is time to delve into the top 10 and find out which has been rated top of our star-studded list.

We’ve had plenty of big names in the first 40 trebles, and there’s a whole heap more in the final part of our countdown.

In the top 10, Sportsmail’s DAN RIPLEY includes magical moments from the likes of Robin van Persie, Luis Suarez and Alan Shearer… but whose hat-trick is rated No 1?

Few, if any, Premier League strikers have taken less time to endear themselves to a fanbase than Fabrizio Ravanelli.

Middlesbrough’s summer signing from Juventus took just one afternoon, netting three equalisers on the opening day against Liverpool. Each goal featured a rally cry in front of ecstatic Boro fans and of course two of the strikes were followed by the famous shirt-over-the-head celebration burning an iconic image in Premier League folklore.

Over the season Ravanelli and Boro kept scoring. It was keeping them out that was the problem. So much so that when relegation was confirmed on the final day of the campaign, Boro’s 50 goals scored were only bettered by five of the top six sides.

Combined with two cup final defeats and a three point deduction for not fulfilling a fixture (that ended up costing them their top flight place) it was a sting in the tail few would have expected given the White Feather’s 31 goals across all competitions.

Southampton’s prospects of staying up in the Premier League were looking bleak before this game kicked off. They certainly had not improved when they found themselves 3-1 down 10 minutes into the second half.

As ever it took another Matt Le Tissier masterclass to bail out a defence that had more holes than a sieve. His 15-minute hat-trick giving the Saints renewed hope by levelling the score at 4-4 (as well as his 100th goal for the club.

Ironically it was defender Ken Monkou who grabbed a last-minute winner for the Saints who would go on to beat relegation on the final day of the season by just one point.

A season that promised a fresh title challenge with the £15m world record signing of Alan Shearer was looking close to coming to a miserable and premature end during this game.

Having gone a goal up Newcastle were 3-1 down with 13 minutes to play and in danger of falling eight points behind league leaders Manchester United.

Shearer had been hopeless in a woeful attacking performance before his unstoppable free-kick nearly ripped the net to give the Toon hope. The striker suddenly found his usual goal scoring touch to equalise with a fine strike in the bottom corner before tapping in a stoppage-time winner.

Sadly for Newcastle the revival would not last. Only two wins followed over the next couple of months as hopes of re-igniting a title challenge were soon extinguished once again.

Manchester United went into this game knowing that victory would land them a record 20th league title. However, with such a commanding points advantage it was only a matter of when and not if Sir Alex Ferguson would land his final trophy as United boss.

Still opportunity knocked, and it was the night that Robin van Persie fully justified his controversial switch from Arsenal the previous summer.

The Dutchman was the difference maker in an extraordinary campaign and it was only fitting that the second of his treble against Villa to win the title was one of the great Premier League goals.

Van Persie tracked a high 30-yard pass over his shoulder from Wayne Rooney before thumping in a volley that effectively got the title celebrations underway at Old Trafford.

From a technical standpoint it is hard to find a hat-trick as good as this and that is not just restricted to the world of the Premier League.

Dennis Bergkamp’s display at Filbert Street was a warning to the rest of the division about the powerhouse he was to help Arsenal become. The Dutchman opened the scoring by controlling a short corner to the edge of the box before looking effortless as he picked out the far top corner with a looping shot.

His second had a touch of fortune with a ricochet bouncing over Kasey Keller. Leicester hit back with two late goals only for Bergkamp to control a long ball into the box with mesmerising skill before firing Arsenal back in front.

The high quality gloss of the Arsenal striker’s treble took a dent though as the Foxes went straight down the other end to rescue a point in an extraordinary finale.

Has one Premier League player ever terrorised a team as much as Luis Suarez did to Norwich City?

The Uruguay striker netted six Premier League trebles, half of which came against the Canaries - a hat-trick of hat-tricks you may say.

It is his last one that makes the list though in a season where Liverpool looked unstoppable as they went on to just miss out on the title.

Suarez opened the scoring with an outrageous 35-yard wonder strike that looped into the top corner, before doubling his tally with a close range finish.

The treble was complete with a fine piece of skill to lift the ball over a defender before finishing with aplomb across goal… oh and he added a fourth with a free-kick into the top corner.

Aside from four minutes and 32 seconds, very little else is remembered about this early season clash at Anfield.

But those few minutes saw a 19 year-old Robbie Fowler tear into the Arsenal defence. First with a poacher’s effort, then a perfectly placed drive across goal into the bottom corner and finally with a tap-in after taking the ball past a stranded David Seaman.

Fowler’s treble set the record for the fastest Premier League hat-trick and it took a little longer than four minutes to break it…

…it actually took 21 years and another current Liverpool player in Sadio Mane to set the new bar by netting a hat-trick that was timed at just two minutes and 56 seconds.

However, Mane’s record setting treble came with Southampton as he helped demolish Tim Sherwood’s hapless Aston Villa side.

It was not even against tired legs as two poacher’s efforts were followed by a well placed strike into the top corner to leave Aston Villa 3-0 down and well beaten inside 16 minutes.

Fifteen minutes to go at Stamford Bridge and this London derby looked finished following goals either side of the break from Chelsea by Tore-Andre Flo and Dan Petrescu.

Few could have expected what was to follow as the otherwise anonymous Nwankwo Kanu made a devastating impact on the game.

The striker pulled a goal back with a poked finish into the corner, before equalising with a near-post finish.

It was the winner that goes on be fondly remembered though, taking the ball past stranded Chelsea keeper Ed de Goey on the byline before lifting in a finish from an acute angle. Commentator Martin Tyler summed it all up by crying out ‘Kan-u believe it?!’

Now we come to the hat-trick that had everything. Technical brilliance, late drama, fierce rivalry, history making and one of the Premier League’s finest ever players to help tie it all together.

Dimitar Berbatov’s skilled header while diving away from goal opened the scoring for United against bitter rivals Liverpool before the Bulgarian doubled the lead with a stylish overhead kick.

But Liverpool hit back five minutes later with a Steven Gerrard penalty before the Reds skipper equalised 20 minutes from time with a deflected free-kick.

The tense finale in English football’s biggest fixture was set at Old Trafford and Berbatov seized the moment, heading home late on to become the first United player in 64 years to score a hat-trick against Liverpool.

Mario Lemina has been a shining light for Southampton this season

Since June 2014, the Reds have raided the Saints on multiple occasions.

Rickie Lambert, Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and, most recently, Virgil van Dijk have all made the move to Merseyside from the south coast.

Which Premier League teams have the toughest fixtures in the run-in?

Show/hide article…

Which Premier League teams have the toughest fixtures in the run-in?

There are just 10 rounds of Premier League matches left in the 2017/18 season - and the battles at each end of the table are heating up. But who has the fixture list on their side? And who is facing a tough run-in?

While Manchester City look near-certainties for the title, the race to join them in the top four and the Champions League qualifying places looks like it could go down to the wire. Arsenal face an uphill battle to make the cut but with just six points separating fifth-placed Chelsea and second-placed Manchester United, the difficulty of their remaining fixtures could be decisive.

The relegation battle is equally unpredictable, with any team in the bottom half of the table facing the prospect of being sucked into the drop zone, should results not go their way in the final part of the campaign.

So who has the toughest run-in? We’ve looked at the current league position of each team’s remaining opposition and calculated the average level of difficulty - and it’s good news for Liverpool fans, while relegation-threatened Brighton have a nightmare finale to their first Premier League campaign…

Liverpool have the upper hand when it comes to the race for the top four, in terms of their fixtures. Their remaining opponents have an average league position of 12th - only Leicester City (12.1) have a more generous run-in.

Jurgen Klopp’s side, who currently sit third in the table, four points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea, have just two games left against top-six opposition, with trips to Manchester United and Chelsea to come.

Fourth-placed Tottenham have the next best schedule, with the opponents they have left to play averaging 11.5 in the Premier League. Just two of their remaining fixtures are against top six sides - Chelsea and Man City.

Manchester United (11.1, with three top-six opponents - Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal) have a marginally tougher run-in than their neighbours Man City (11.2, with three top-six opponents - Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham).

However, it is Chelsea who have the toughest remaining tests of the top-four chasers. The average position of the Blues’ remaining opponents is 10.8 and they have crunch clashes against top-six sides Man City, Tottenham and Liverpool still to come.

At the other end of the table, bottom club West Brom are seven points from safety and have the fifth-toughest run-in of any club (with opponents averaging 9.5 in the league and featuring three top-six opponents).

But our run-in analysis also paints a sorry picture for Brighton. While the Seagulls are currently in an impressive 12th place in their debut Premier League season their four-point gap to the drop zone could come under threat through the toughest run-in of any side in the top flight.

Brighton’s remaining opponents have an average league position of 7.1 - and they still have to play FIVE of the top six. No other team has more than four games against the top six left.

Worse, Brighton have a terrible record against those leading sides this season. They are the only Premier League team without a single point against the Big Six and have lost their games against those sides by an aggregate score of 18-1.

Furthermore, in their reverse fixtures against their remaining 10 opponents, Brighton have taken a grand total of three points from a possible 30, failing to beat any of them.

West Ham are a point worse off than Brighton and have the second-toughest run-in, while second-from-bottom Stoke must overcome the third-hardest schedule to escape relegation.
