Rangers to find out if they’ve got Ross Wilson in the next 24 hours

Show/hide article…

Rangers hope to know in the next 24 hours if Ross Wilson will accept an offer to become the club’s new director of football.

Currently Southampton’s director of scouting, Wilson has been offered the job of revamping the football operation at Ibrox.

Sources at the English Premier League club believe Wilson will stay after executive director Les Reed returned from holiday for crunch talks with his top talent spotter.

But Rangers remain hopeful of a positive response before Saturday’s Scottish Cup quarter-final clash with Hamilton.

Paul Mitchell of Tottenham has also been interviewed for the post, while Huddersfield’s Stuart Webber turned down an offer to meet Rangers directors last week.

The appointment of a director of football will come ahead of the announcement of the club’s new manager, which is expected next week.

Portuguese coach Pedro Caixinha remains the first choice of selection panel Stewart Robertson, Andrew Dickson and Graeme Park following interviews in London.

Former Birmingham boss Gary Rowett also met the Ibrox club this week but could hedge his bets on an offer from English clubs this summer. Alex McLeish is also in the running for the job along with another unnamed candidate.

Qatar club Al-Gharafa are prepared to extend Caixinha’s £2million-a-year contract beyond this summer. After working with the Portuguese during a successful spell at Mexico’s Santos Laguna, however, former Celtic midfielder Marc Crosas believes landing Caixinha would be a real coup.

‘He knows everything,’ said the former Parkhead star. 'Not just football. The physical side, the mental side, other teams. He knows everything.

'Even if I didn’t play as much at Santos because I had a lot of competition and he didn’t have me as a first choice, I think he was one of the coaches who I learned more from. He’s prepared. He works with his players to make them better.

'He absolutely made me a better player. The knowledge, the mental preparedness for challenges and insight into competition are all things any good leader needs to do his job in this game and Pedro had it all.

'In the year and a half that I was coached under Pedro, he never once played a defensive game.

'He always tries to get his sides to attack. No matter who the opposition is - his game is completely based on attacking.

‘He played a pressing game and wanted his sides to try and take advantage of any mistakes made by the opposition.’

Cainxinha was last week fined £2,500 by the Qatari FA for criticising referees.

Insisting that’s a key strategy of the former Saudi national team coach, Crosas added: 'Pedro is a very smart coach. You often hear him complaining about referees.

'But most of the time he did that to try and motivate his players because he got them to think everyone was against them.

'So his players went on to the pitch with extra motivation because they thought the referees were always giving decisions against them.

‘It was all about motivation for Pedro and any way he could help his players, he would try it.’

Rangers defender Rob Kiernan, meanwhile, could be free to play in next weekend’ s Old Firm clash with Celtic after the Ibrox side appealed his midweek red card against St Johnstone.

Dismissed for a late lunge on Saints substitute Graham Cummins, Kiernan faces an immediate two-match ban.

With a hearing scheduled for next Thursday, the defender is already free to face Hamilton in the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

And caretaker boss Graeme Murty believes he should also be cleared by the SFA panel to face Celtic.

'I have looked at it again and we will be appealing it. I think it’s a no-brainer actually that we go and do that.

‘I looked at his foot position, I looked at his intent and I looked at what happened and the mechanism of it, and I don’t think it was worse than some of the challenges that were put in on Barrie McKay.’

Puel says Cáceres could feature for Under-23s

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says Martín Cáceres could feature for Southampton Under-23s against their Chelsea counterparts on Monday night at St Mary’s.

The defender, who arrived at Southampton two weeks ago, has not played this season having worked his way back from an injury sustained while at Juventus.

With Saints not in action in the Premier League for another two weeks after Watford, Puel believes Monday night’s Premier League 2 game presents a good opportunity for the defender.

“He improves step-by-step every training session. I hope he continues this work,” Puel said.

“I don’t know if he can start the next game, or perhaps to see him also with the opportunity to play with the Under-23s against Chelsea on Monday.

“It’s perhaps an opportunity to make a good official game against the good young players of Chelsea and see him in this situation.”

And Puel adds that he does not feel pressure to play the experienced international in a first-team game right away, as he works his way back to full match sharpness, with the focus on the team rather than the individual.

“For me it’s important just to see good things for the team,” he explained.

“It’s not pressure for me, no obligation with any player. It’s important to see always the good possibilities, the balance of the team, the work of any player in training.

“For me a young player, an experienced player, all the players are important. I try to put on the pitch the best players in the team.”

It will be free entry at St Mary’s for Monday night’s Premier League 2 clash with Chelsea.

Puel laments “crazy” fixture schedule

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has labelled his club’s fixture calendar as “crazy” and believes it puts Saints at a disadvantage compared to some of their rivals.

Saints have just two games in March, having played a club record nine in January.

With postponements due to cup matches they are left kicking their heels with three games in 48 days, before what will be a jam packed finale to the campaign.

Saints will need to squeeze rearranged matches against Manchester United and Arsenal into midweek slots, and a trip to Chelsea could yet be added to that list depending on the FA Cup quarter-final results.

Puel, whose side take on Watford tomorrow, was already frustrated Saints had by far the hardest fixture run of any Premier League club over Christmas, and now feels a sense of annoyance over the way things are panning out again.

He said: “My job and my work was to prepare the team with the difficulty of the calendar, not just to play a final.

“When you see we have got to play two games in the month after playing every three days since the beginning of the season it’s crazy. It is crazy for us, and difficult.

“It is difficult to keep the good focus, the good concentration, with a game every two weeks.

“This game against Watford is very important for us when you see the table.

“You saw we cannot play against Arsenal and we lost two places on the table.

“After Watford we cannot play against Manchester United and that gives the other teams a chance.

“Then we play every three days to see the games rearranged. We have got to play against teams playing once a week.

“All this difficulties and a good challenge and we have to adapt to this position of the calendar.

“It is why this game against Watford is very important. When we play it is important to win.”

Puel was asked whether the fixture calendar was unfair, and reflected: “It is difficult. For example when we have had two weeks before the final it was a good thing because we played every three days since the beginning of the season.

“I can give players four days off, the first time this season, and fantastic for the staff and the recovery of the players. After we go on a training camp in Spain and it was fantastic work.

“I said congratulations for all the club staff around the team and for the players also, because all do fantastic, professional work to prepare this game and to put the players in the best condition.

“Now it’s different. Two weeks is dangerous because to keep the good concentration and focus on the training sessions, the good intensity and reason is very difficult.

“To keep all the attention of the players. We can train but a training session is not an official game. This is difficult.

“We played every three days and for Christmas five days, three games, was crazy. Just us. Now two weeks every time to prepare a game is very difficult.

“It is a real challenge for the next game to have good result in this condition.”

Southampton to battle Premier League rivals for Chelsea defender

Show/hide article…

The Saints are set to challenge their south-coast rivals Bournemouth for the 22-year-old, according to The Telegraph. Eddie Howe made a £18m deadline day move for the youngster but it was turned down by Chelsea. Ake was recalled from the Cherries by the Premier League leaders earlier in January after impressing for Howe’s side.

But the Dutch defender is yet to appear in the Premier League under Antonio Conte. Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger is adamant that they will not sell Virgil van Dijk this summer. But with a number of top European clubs courting the ex-Celtic man, the EFL Cup finalists could be fighting a losing battle.

And with a shortage of centre-backs at St. Mary’s, Ake could be able to cement a first-team position. Ryan Bertrand and Oriol Romeu followed a similar path from Stamford Bridge to the south coast and are now integral parts of the side. However, with the increasing likelihood that John Terry will leave at the end of the season it remains to be seen whether Ake could play a more prominent part in Conte’s future plans. Despite their January snub, Bournemouth are still sniffing around the player and could rival their south coast neighbours.

Puel: I don’t have to play Caceres

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insists he is not under pressure to play Martin Caceres, despite Saints forking out to bring him in for the rest of the season.

Saints failed to land a new centre half in the January window and so moved for the former Juventus and Barcelona man, who was a free agent.

Reports in Italy have suggested that Caceres will pocket around £850,000 for his brief stay at St Mary’s.

However, with only 13 Premier League matches now remaining, and the centre half still trying to get up to full fitness having not played for more than a year, he looks unlikely to play a particularly significant role in the season.

Indeed, Puel has suggested that rather than start him against Watford tomorrow he may instead give him game time for the under-23s on Monday night.

“He improves step by step every training session. I hope he continues this work,” said Puel.

“I don’t know if he can start the next game, or perhaps to see him also with the opportunity to play with the under-23s against Chelsea on Monday.

“It’s perhaps a good opportunity to make a good official game against the good young players of Chelsea and see him in a good situation.”

Puel, though, insists there is no pressure on him from the Saints hierarchy to play Caceres to justify the amount they are paying him.

“For me it’s important just to see good things for the team,” said the Saints boss.

“It’s not pressure for me, no obligation with any player.

“It’s important to see always the good possibilities, the good balance in the team, the work of any player in training, and to do the good solution for the team.

“For me a young player, an experienced player, all the players are important.

“I try to put in the pitch the best players in the team.”

Puel is facing a tough challenge to keep his squad motivated and happy during a run of three games in 48 days.

Having had all the squad so used to playing during the fixture laden first half of the campaign which saw such rotation, there are now players who are unlikely to play for a period of months.

That will inevitably cause some issues, and Puel admitted: “It’s difficult and I can understand some frustrations about some players. This is normal, we cannot make another thing.

“But for example when we go to play in April we need all the squad because we’ll have to play every three days, against a team with just one game a week.

“It will be important to keep all the players with good confidence and spirit until the end of the season.”

DAVID WOODS COLUMN: Chelsea fans have changed their tune, Saints robbed in EFL Cup final

Show/hide article…

That’s a fact - just like it’s clearly also true that Claudio Ranieri lost the dressing room and some of his stars were not putting it in for him. So much has been written slamming the players for the dismissal of the much-liked Ranieri. But much of it misses the point. Players are so powerful and self-important now because we - fans, the media, just about everyone - have made them that way. We have created the monsters. Paid wages of up to £300,000 a week for working just a few hours a day, idolised and adored and regularly hailed as heroes - sometimes for just tapping in a winner - what on earth do we expect to happen to them with all this gloating attention?

Last season it was laughable when the Chelsea crowd turned against the likes of Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard after the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December 2015. They valiantly gave them stick for one game, then, job done, went back to loving them as the Blues’ form picked up. Find me one fan at Stamford Bridge who has even given a passing thought lately about the supposed ‘betrayal’ - for the second time at the club - of Chelsea’s most successful manager and I’ll probably faint. The thought occurred this week about how long the ‘hairdryer’ style approach of the early Sir Alex Ferguson days would last if he was to arrive on the scene like that these days.

Manchester United’s current superstars would soon down tools, just like they did with the disliked ‘old school’ Louis van Gaal, and have him out. All this slagging off of players is boring and predictable. It is what it is. Stars have all the power these days and we’ve only ourselves to blame. If Leicester beat Hull tomorrow and then progress past Sevilla in the Champions League, it’ll soon be a case of Claudio Who?

MANOLO GABBIADINI ought to be running out tomorrow at Watford a true Wembley legend. Somehow it got lost this week just how much the Italian missed out on in the EFL Cup final on Sunday. His first ‘goal’ against Manchester United was incorrectly ruled out for offside and after that he scored two superb strikes for Southampton. But United, of course, won 3-2 and Zlatan Ibrahimovic hogged the headlines once again because he headed home from close range late on for his own double. Had linesman Stuart Burt not messed up, Italian Gabbiadini would have joined an elite group of just three players to have scored a hat-trick in a major Wembley cup final, with none other than Stan Mortensen and Sir Geoff Hurst the only two (I’m not counting David Speedie’s treble in the 1986 Full Members Cup final).

It was one of those ‘Sliding Doors’ moments, a point in Gabbiadini’s life where it could have all been so different. He could, and should, have scored a hat-trick. Southampton - who were excellent- would probably have won their first trophy in 41 years and qualified for the Europa League. The point of all this is to show how ridiculous it is we are still talking about video replays coming in. With technology so advanced it takes just a few seconds to double-check a decision and, to stop overuse, teams could be limited to three appeals a game, like in tennis each set for dubious line-calls. One day in the future the current refusal to use video technology will be seen as antiquated as heavy balls with laces are now.
