Luke Shaw eyes Southampton return: Man Utd exit could spark three more major deals

Show/hide article…

Manchester United defender Shaw has failed to win over Jose Mourinho since the Special One arrived at Old Trafford last summer.

Shaw has not played a minute of Premier League football this season and any potential future with United under Mourinho looks bleak at best.

The Mirror report that the 22-year-old is now eyeing a shock return to Southampton when the transfer window reopens.

The England ace left St Mary’s in a £30m deal in June 2014 but it yet to make 50 appearances for United.

He is now reportedly keen to move back to the south coast to help reignite his career ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

Saints set for vital match

Show/hide article…

Saints know they must make the most of tomorrow’s crunch St Mary’s clash with Burnley to give themselves some breathing space ahead of a nightmare run of fixtures.

Though the team are comfortably midtable with 13 points from their first 10 matches, with the majority of games having been at home and only one top six side faced there is no room to rest easy.

After the upcoming international break Saints enter a run of fixtures that sees them take on all of the Premier League’s top six before the turn of the year, with five of those matches away from home.

Saints know that if they can beat Burnley then they have the chance to approach those games in a more relaxed manner, playing as the underdogs against the division’s big guns, and that might just help them pull off a few shocks.

But should they fail to defeat Burnley and suddenly feel they have to get points against the top dogs to stop a potential slide down a very closely fought table, it could be much harder.

When asked if this was a pressure match, Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino said: “This game is really important for us because we need to keep going and get points. We have in the last three games and it’s another opportunity to keep going and convert this performance into points.

“In the future we will play against the biggest teams in the Premier League but we don’t know.

“I am really happy about that because for me as a manager to play against the biggest teams is something to enjoy.

“I would like to see from my players something like against Man U when we play really well and you don’t know in football. It is an opportunity to show how we are and we have to show every single week.”

Given the way the fixture list is this season, Saints always knew they would ideally like a fast start to set themselves up for a good year.

It has been a bit more up and down than Pellegrino would have liked, but he insists their fate remains very much in their own hands, no matter how hard the upcoming run appears.

“I think we deserve to have more points, minimum two or three points, but the reality is we have 13 points and we have to keep going,” he insisted.

“Nothing changes if we have two or three points more or two or three points less. We have to try and improve and win games.

“The stats and the figures are important at the end of the season, but obviously to be honest I would like to have more points.”

Southampton legend picks his ultimate Saints team

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have been asking supporters through a survey who would make the grade in an Ultimate Saints XI – and here legend Francis Benali picks his.

The results of the survey will be revealed when the SeaCity Museum in Southampton opens a major exhibition about the club on 29th March 2018.

Here, the Daily Echo, has asked Saints legend Benali who makes his Ultimate Saints XI ahead of the survey’s deadline 8pm on Sunday.

“The whole selection process was a tough one,” said Benali. “The names in it and the players who weren’t in the selection list, you could have almost picked three full teams and still had headaches, so picking 11 players was tough.”

With the help of historians, Saints have selected a shortlist of players to pick from to make up each team.

The club state: “To qualify, players need to have represented the club after 1945 and have made 150 or more appearances, unless they are deemed to have made a particularly special contribution or significant impact during their time with Saints. Current players are not included in the vote.”

Here is Benali’s team and his explanation to why he’s made his selection decisions.

I learned something from all the managers I played for and I tried to take something from them. There were a number of managers I could have picked but Lawrie, for me, was the right pick. The fact that he signed me as a school boy at 14 when he was manager of the first team and the fact he’s the only manager who has brought a major piece of silverware to the club in all these years, means I’ve got to choose him.

Tim gets the nod because I played with him and I know what it was like to play in front of him, how good his communication skills were and what a good goalkeeper he was technically. He was a great all-round goalkeeper that you’d be willing and happy to have in any team. That’s why Tim got the nod and he was a great character in the dressing room as well. On and off the pitch he was a great personality.

He was just so reliable and steady. By his own admission he wasn’t the quickest of players but he could read the game so well. He had that passion and commitment again and he was a character on and off the pitch. He was someone who was so reliable and never let you down. He was captain for many years, so in a way he was an obvious choice for my 11.

I played against Mark Wright when I was a youngster as an apprentice at the club. He was in the first team at the time and I just remember playing as a striker, as I was back then, in training games and practice matches and finding it so hard to get past him and beat him in the air. He had an incredible career, he was a wonderful player and he was an England international as well. He was just one of those players who looked comfortable in possession. He wasn’t just a big battering ram. He was a competitive player.

Nicknamed ‘Silky’, which said it all really. He was so composed and comfortable on the ball. He carried the ball out of defence and created an attack with ease. Considering he was from Scandinavia, he fitted in and was just one of the guys. He fitted in with the dressing room culture, the humour and he was a brave defender as well. For that reason he gets the nod alongside Mark Wright at centre-back.

I’d like nothing more to play in this team but I don’t think it’s for me to choose myself in this line up. I’d obviously love to play in the team but Bridgey was someone who came through when I was at the club. I played on the same side as him on the left with him ahead of me and it was nice to hand the reigns of my place in the team over to another local boy and someone who had come through the club. I managed to fight off a few over the years who I was competing with but to eventually hand that over to the Bridgey was good with me as I knew he was such a great player, and someone who would be a world class international player. He was the first breed of the modern full back. He could attack and defend and for that reason he gets in my team.

I remember watching Alan stood on the terraces as a young boy when I used to watch Saints at The Dell. I just remember how simple he kept the game as a football player – it was one or two touch football. He had that passion and desire and love for the game that I saw close up when he joined the club as a manager and I played under him in the side. That enthusiasm just rubbed off on everybody and ultimately when you’ve got a World Cup winner walking through the door he commands that instant respect. He was an obvious choice for the line up.

A senior figure in my time when I was coming through as a youngster, he was the senior pro in the team, the enforcer of the team. Nobody took liberties with Jimmy. He wasn’t just a fierce competitor, he was also a wonderful footballer and could pass the ball around from anywhere. He was that good old head in the team that we needed as youngsters coming in as well as being a bit of a minder for us as well.

Again someone I watched as a youngster from the stands. The goal celebration was always memorable and I think someone who plays that amount of games for the club, and the amount of goals he scored, he just couldn’t be left out the side. He had to be in the 11.

He’d always make my team. He’d be any greatest team. Anything, five-a-side or 11-a-side. He was an absolute genius and the goals he scored, set pieces he could score from and just the ability to create something out of nothing was amazing. You’ve got to have him in the team.

Rod came through the youth system with me. Blistering pace, lightening fast but would also do his bit defensively as well. I played behind Rod during the time he had at the club, so I saw first-hand what a benefit he could be going forward and defensively. He could score goals as well so he is the man for the left side of the three.

It was another tough choice on who to pick but look at what Rickie did for the club. His goals were so valuable and off the pitch he was a wonderful person. His journey through football was incredible and then to play in the Premier League in his 30s and become a full international and score on your debut … it’s almost like Roy of the Rovers stuff. He’s a lovely guy and a fantastic footballer. Again, set pieces, free kicks and penalties he’s pretty lethal from, so it would have been an interesting conversation for Matt and Rickie to decide who were on penalties.

Inside Track: Burnley

Show/hide article…

It’s been a fantastic start to the season, what’s the mood like at the club at present?

The mood is always good to be fair, but enhanced by an excellent start to the season. The only black cloud is the speculation surrounding the manager Sean Dyche, which isn’t going away just yet. There was a story on Tuesday morning that an approach from the Toffees was imminent, which we quashed, but there have been more stories, and until Everton appoint someone else or retain David Unsworth, there will be that element of anxiety among the support.

Their home form was so strong last season, but they seem better equipped on the road having amassed eight points. What do you think that is down to?

A number of things really, another year’s experience at this level, and the fact away performances were improving last season, without getting the results until the penultimate away game at Crystal Palace. But Burnley have added to their impressive framework and organisation, and are looking after the ball better - as a central two of Jack Cork and Steven Defour would suggest - and the 24-pass move that led to the winner at Everton emphasised that.

Who have been the key men for Sean Dyche’s men thus far?

Cork and Defour, as mentioned, have been pivotal, while you could go right across the back four, but particularly the centre backs Ben Mee and James Tarkowski. It was all too easy for pundits who didn’t know Burnley to suggest the sale of Michael Keane would hurt them, but Tarkowski has seamlessly slotted in, and Mee has maintained his excellent performance levels. They are in and around the top clearances and blocks in Europe’s top five leagues.

What sort of a game are you anticipating?

It should be very interesting, certainly tactically. Both sides have scored and conceded a similar number of goals,

Burnley can hurt teams in a variety of ways, they won at Chelsea playing on the front foot after the dismissal of Gary Cahill, and soaked up pressure to claim a point at Spurs and Liverpool, before scoring a superb team goal to win at Everton. But Saints look difficult to penetrate and I like Manolo Gabbiadini, and, if fit, Charlie Austin just scores goals, as Clarets fans know well.

Southampton must find right balance to improve, says Romeu

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton must find the right balance between a fast-paced offence and a solid defence that prevents counter-attacks if they are to improve results, midfielder Oriol Romeu said ahead of Saturday’s Premier League game against Burnley.

Southampton are 10th in the standings after winning three and drawing four of their opening 10 games but the Saints have struggled to score, notching just nine goals in the competition so far.

Former Chelsea midfielder Romeu believes that the team are restricted by the fear of giving away goals on the counter.

“Whenever we play against these teams we know how good they are defensively,” Romeu was quoted as saying by the Daily Echo.

”They (opponents) are clever, they are ready to run and recover and go for the counter-attack and that’s hard, because if you try and attack too much you can get killed by a counter-attack.

“We need to find that balance between being creative and offensive and not being punished by a counter-attack.”

The 26-year-old urged his team to be quicker on the ball to drag opposition players out of position and capitalise more on their goal-scoring chances.

“We’d love to all be more creative and make a difference in the last third, but that’s difficult,” the Spaniard added.

“We need to be quicker with the ball, make them (opponents) run and pull them out of place. That will give us a bigger chance to get to the box and get more chances.”

Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina, who missed last week’s 1-1 draw with Brighton due to an ankle injury, has been ruled out of Saturday’s clash, while forward Charlie Austin could get his first league start of the campaign.

Transfer Rater: Charly Musonda to Arsenal, Luke Shaw to Southampton

Show/hide article…

Things change in the blink of an eye in football. The Football Whispers Index takes the latest transfer rumours and gives them a score out of five; the higher the score, the more realistic and reliable the whisper.

Here are today’s top five emerging whispers. And keep an eye on Transfer Talk for all the latest gossip.

Barcelona target Tah could leave Bayer Leverkusen for £22.3 million thanks to a release clause. The 21-year-old centre-back has been heavily linked with a move to the Catalan club after scouts were spotted watching him earlier in the season. Tah has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s finest defenders since joining Bayer from Hamburg in 2015. Ernesto Valverde is keen to bolster his backline with Thomas Vermaelen and Javier Mascherano tipped to leave the Camp Nou in the summer.

Arsenal are plotting a raid on their Premier League rivals as they weigh up a bid for unsettled Chelsea youngster Musonda. The 21-year-old midfielder has reportedly told Antonio Conte that he wants to leave after growing frustrated at a lack of first team opportunities and hit out at the club last month on Instagram. Musonda has run out of patience and is keen to jump ship, with the Gunners monitoring his progress closely.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is prepared to let Shaw leave on loan but the out-of-favour left-back would prefer a permanent switch to Southampton. The 22-year-old left the Saints for Old Trafford in 2014 but has fallen down the pecking order under the Portuguese coach, who has publicly questioned his attitude.

Shaw has been restricted to just two Carabao Cup appearances this season and does not figure prominently in Mourinho’s plans. A return to Southampton has been mooted as a possible solution, with currents Saints left-back Ryan Bertrand emerging as a Manchester City target.

Newcastle are ready to battle Arsenal in the race to sign highly rated Atlanta United playmaker Almiron. The Paraguay international has emerged as one of the hottest properties in MLS, scoring nine goals and adding eight assists in 30 appearances. Although the Gunners remain interested, Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is keen to steal a march on rival Arsene Wenger. The Spaniard has been deploying Ayoze Perez in an attacking midfield role this season but is determined to sign a more naturally creative player.

Newcastle are also interested in signing Liverpool striker Ings. The former Burnley man has been plagued by injuries since joining the Reds in 2015, but the Magpies may be willing to offer the 25-year-old a chance to resurrect his Premier League career. Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Dominic Solanke are all ahead of Ings in the Liverpool pecking order and it is thought Jurgen Klopp will not stand in his way should he decide to leave. Newcastle need fresh impetus up front, having managed just 10 goals in as many games this season.

Guardiola to swoop for Bertrand with Mendy out until April

Show/hide article…

Manchester City have relaunched their interest in Ryan Bertrand as Pep Guardiola targets a replacement for their injured summer signing Benjamin Mendy.

Just days before the announcement of Kyle Walker’s signing - for £54million - Sportsmail revealed that Guardiola was also targeting a move for Southampton full back Bertrand.

But instead, the City boss opted for Walker and former Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy, who cost Guardiola a further £52m before he suffered a knee ligament injury in only his fourth Premier League appearance.

Mendy’s injury has packed a bigger punch than Guardiola first perceived and the Frenchman is set to be sidelined until April at least, leaving City without a natural left back to fill the void, with Fabian Delph the only contender for the spot of late.

Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam was Guardiola’s original choice, but with the Algerian also sidelined indefinitely, the Sun has reported a source revealed Bertrand may yet again be at the top of Guardiola’s wish list come the January transfer window.

‘Ryan Bertrand is back on the radar of City with Napoli refusing to budge on Ghoulam at present,’ the source said.

'Bertrand is a player City have ran the rule over before, but his transfer fee could be an issue, it all depends on what they ask for again.

‘His homegrown status is also attractive. The issue they have is Benjamin Mendy is expected to be out for the season.’

City were originally set to offer £25m for the left back, but with their desperation to find a replacement clear, the Saints may well try to empty the Premier League leaders’ pockets a little more.

‘We will see if we can add players in January,’ Guardiola said in October. ‘The problem we have is the Mendy injury.’
