Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino warns Virgil van Dijk they will not yield to Liverpool offer

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino will attempt to personally broker a compromise between the Southampton board and Virgil van Dijk by telling the club captain that the stance over refusing a sale to Liverpool has not softened.

Van Dijk and the directors remain locked in a damaging stand-off that has left their star player having taken no part in any pre-season matches, or indeed full training, this summer. He now appears almost certain to miss the first Premier League game against Swansea City next Saturday.

Southampton had hoped that they could begin the process of reintegrating Van Dijk into first-team training after the club returned from a camp in France but, according to Pellegrino, the Dutchman does not want to play.

Liverpool transfer news: Chelsea want Van Dijk, Coutinho to Barca latest, angry Klopp

Show/hide article…

Liverpool face a fight on their hands to sign Virgil Van Dijk with Chelsea readying a bid of £50m for the Southampton defender. Jurgen Klopp has been frustrated in his attempts to sign the Dutch international so far this summer. Southampton complained to the Premier League earlier in the summer over Liverpool’s approach for the defender. But Van Dijk has made it clear he wants to leave the south coast club with little over a week to go until the Premier League season gets underway.

Southampton are reluctant to do business with Liverpool, but The Times claim Chelsea are ready to offer £50m for Van Dijk and are reportedly confident of sealing a deal in the next week. Philippe Coutinho is not Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde’s No.1 option to replace Neymar, according to reports in Spain. Barcelona are on the lookout for a marquee signing following Neymar’s £200m move to PSG. Coutinho was thought to be one of Barcelona’s main targets having had two bids already rejected from Liverpool.

But Spanish outlet Don Balon claim Valverde believes former Tottenham ace Paulinho would be a better fit. Paulinho currently plies his trade in the Chinese Super League with Guangzhou Evergrande after leaving Tottenham in 2015. Jurgen Klopp is happy to be portrayed as the bad guy at Liverpool, as long as they are able to keep hold of their star players. The Liverpool boss has continually been questioned over the future of Coutinho and has consistently denied the Brazil international will leave Anfield.

With Champions League football to contend with this season, should they win they play-off this month, Klopp will need to utilise his squad. And the German coach admits that he will be forced into some difficult decisions over squad selection. “Everybody thought ‘he’s going, he’s going, he’s going’ but so far nobody is going,” Klopp said. "If we stay together like this there will be a few hard decisions because they can’t start all together. Then we have to see how this works. “Be angry at me, no problem, stay confident, that is important, then three days [later] there is another game so let’s be there again. There are a lot of challenges.”

Chelsea to scupper Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk hopes with £50m bid: Reds will pay £60m

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have been the favourites to sign Van Dijk this summer with the Southampton defender recently stating his intention to leave the south coast club.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed Van Dijk continues to train alone with his future unresolved.

Liverpool was thought to be his favoured destination with the lure of working with Jurgen Klopp a big attraction.

But Southampton are reluctant to do business with the Merseyside club after they complained to the Premier League to investigate Liverpool over suspicions of tapping up.

Saints team up with The Big Issue to offer job opportunities

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have teamed up with The Big Issue to offer employment opportunities to those battling poverty.

The club has formed a partnership with the magazine which offers vulnerable people a way to earn a living and get back on their feet.

Vendors of The Big Issue will develop employment skills as part of the initiative which launches on Monday.

A special Southampton FC edition of The Big Issue will be sold by vendors across the city from next week and will be distributed as the official match day programme at the club’s Premier League opener next Saturday.

The Big Issue is a nationwide charity offering those battling poverty the chance to earn a wage through magazine sales.

Vendors will also be provided with the opportunity to enrol in an eight-week employability programme, run by Saints Foundation, which will equip them with skills and offer work placements across the club.

Greg Baker, head of Saints Foundation and community partnerships at Saints, said: “Southampton is a club built around tradition and family, and this partnership is an exciting way to begin the new season and help drive further positive change among our community.

“We’re delighted to help provide adults in and around the area with opportunities and skills they need to take the first step towards a fruitful career.”

The special Southampton FC edition of The Big Issue will be sold across the city and surrounding areas including Ringwood, Lymington and Winchester, as well as Salisbury and the Isle of Wight.

Vendor Lee Barnes said: “When I first started to sell the magazine, I’d hide behind it, but The Big Issue brought myself out a bit more, developed me and gave me a bit of confidence.”

Editor of the magazine, Paul McNamee, said: “This is a tremendous project to be involved with. It shows that Southampton FC and Saints Foundation share our ideals of building new ways to allow the poorest in society to fight poverty and work their way out of it.

“It shows that football can cut through in ways that other avenues can’t and it gives me and the team an excuse to hand around football grounds – which is a very good thing.”

Big Issue managing director Russell Blackman added: “The joining forces of Saints Foundation and The Big Issue reflects our shared values and commitment to a more equal society, supporting those whose lives have been blighted by poverty and a lack of opportunity.”

Pellegrino targets new signings

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is aiming for at least one new signing to freshen up his Saints squad.

With the new Premier League season little over a week away, Saints have so far only recruited £5m Polish centre half Jan Bednarek this summer.

Rather than lavishing cash on new players, the club’s recent policy has instead been to try and maintain the squad they have, tying star players down to expensive long-term contracts.

However, Pellegrino is still keen on bringing in a fresh face or two, and admitted that Saints thought they had a couple of deals done recently only for the players to end up moving elsewhere.

He said: “We are studying the market.

“We have got some options and always we can improve the squad.

“We will keep going and after we will wait to see what happens.”

Pellegrino, whose situation is not helped by the ongoing uncertainty over the future of Virgil van Dijk, continued: “We got a couple of players close to sign the contract but we lost them.

“The market is difficult, a lot of important teams are challenging for the best players.

“We are confident that someone can come.”

Pellegrino has been back at Staplewood working with his squad again and aiming to learn the lessons of Wednesday night’s chastening 4-0 defeat to Augsburg at St Mary’s.

Though the team Pellegrino fielded for his first home game in charge of Saints was not the strongest or the fittest he had available, he certainly expected better than such a heavy loss.

Pellegrino admitted after the game that he is getting nearer to knowing his likely starting line-up for the Premier League opener against Swansea a week tomorrow.

With that in mind he is expected to field the bulk of that team in tomorrow’s final pre-season friendly at home to La Liga side Sevilla.

After the midweek loss Saints could certainly do with a morale boosting victory, and performance, to gain some momentum to take into the new campaign.

“For me the game (against Augsburg) is a night where everything was wrong from the beginning to the end,” admitted Pellegrino.

“We couldn’t manage the game, and the only positive thing is that it was a friendly and we can make a lot of conclusion, in terms of model of play or how we can continue playing about some players at individual level.

“After we have to see the team in the next few games because the other day (St Etienne) the game was good, this was really bad and this is football.”

Liverpool given major boost in race for Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk looks set to miss the opening game of the season as speculation over his future rumbles on.

The Southampton defender remains linked with a move to Anfield despite the Saints’ efforts to keep him at the club.

And now the unsettled Dutchman could try and force through a move by sitting out of their first game of the season against Swansea next weekend, according to the Telegraph.

Van Dijk has not taken part in any pre-season matches or even full training as talks continue.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has admitted that he would like to keep Van Dijk at the club.

“I would like to persuade him that he’s important for us and the club will not sell him,” he said.

Liverpool supporters should not give up hope of their club signing Kylian Mbappe, report the Liverpool Echo.

French papers are claiming the French striking starlet has now decided to leave Monaco after feeling let down by the club failing to sort out a new contract and the continued sale of other top stars.

Liverpool have kept tabs on Mbappe and would like to be involved in transfer talks if the 18-year-old decides that England is right for his continued development.

But L’Equipe report a who’s who of top football clubs as potential destinations for Mbappe, with Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG and Man City all mentioned.

Jurgen Klopp wants his players to be angry with him… because it means he will have created a winning mentality.

The Liverpool boss has cut a frustrated figure in the transfer window so far, forced repeatedly to deny claims that Kop playmaker Philippe Coutinho is heading to Barcelona.

The German has been emphatic in his assertion the Reds will not sell a single player he wants to keep. His target is to have two equally-matched players vying for each position, and if that means some players lashing out at him, then he will gladly take it on the chin.

Talking about wanted-man Coutinho, Klopp said: “Everybody thought, ‘He’s going, he’s going, he’s going’ but so far, nobody is going.

It can’t be easy living and working in a country that doesn’t speak your natural born language.

And it must be even harder living in an area where the residents speak with a thick accent and slang.

Deciding to test how well some of Liverpool’s stars have been settling in, the folks at MBNA got Philippe Coutinho , Sadio Mane and Joel Matip to take on a brilliant Scouse phrase challenge.

The trio went head-to-head and were tasked with working out three different phrases.

Romeu: Sevilla will be a good test

Show/hide article…

The La Liga outfit finished fourth in the 2016/17 season and having already beaten Arsenal, are likely to provide stern competition for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men.

Romeu, who made his senior debut for Barcelona against Sevilla, said: “It’s the last test and probably the most important and the hardest one. It is very close to the first fixture in this season.

“It’s going to be nice. We’re going to have to compete a lot and do a lot of good things, mainly to get that good feeling to start the season well and finish pre-season in a good way.

“It will be important to give some extra confidence to start well in the league. We didn’t have a good result in our previous game and we want to change that.

“It will be an even harder game, a tough opponent but we’re looking forward and it’s going to be a great challenge. We need to do our best.

“It’s good to play against the best teams and see which point you’re at in this moment. They just beat Arsenal a week ago so they arrive in a good way and well prepared.”
