Southampton transfer news: Mauricio Pellegrino calls for ‘patience’ in pursuit of Arsenal forward Theo Walcott

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has urged fans to be patient with the club in their pursuit of Arsenal forward Theo Walcott.

The winger left the south coast club 12 years ago, but has now fallen well down the pecking order at The Emirates.

As a result, the Saints have been linked with a move with their former player.

But, Pellegrino has warned trying to complete business in the transfer window is never easy.

"I cannot talk about players who are not here,” he said.

"We know Walcott is a very good player but now it is not my concern to talk about players not in the club.

"The fans have to be patient; everyone at the club wants people to help us to be stronger, especially as Charlie Austin is out for a long period.

"We have to be optimistic, we have a couple of targets and we are working hard in this way.

"The priority now is to try to help, especially in the final third.

“But the market is really difficult. It’s about negotiations; we can control our side but not the other side.”

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino not fearing sack

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino insists he is not worried about being sacked even if the Saints lose to Watford on Sunday.

Southampton are currently fourth bottom of the table after a run of nine league games without a win, and are now out of the relegation places on goal difference alone.

Seven top-flight managers have lost their jobs since the start of the season but Pellegrino isn’t worried about becoming the eighth, even if his side fails to win at Vicarage Road this weekend.

“It is part of our job,” he said. "The biggest risk in football is to work in football. In football you need results, they are everything.

When asked if he had thought about losing his job, Pellegrino added: "I don’t think about that because it is part of our life. I try to do my best.

“Obviously in football there are three results possible. Everything can pass, and every week history can change. I understand the situation of the fans because we have the same feeling. We are responsible for our situation.”

Southampton suffered a 2-0 defeat to Watford at St Mary’s earlier in the season but Pellegrino believes his side are better equipped to face the Hornets this time round.

“It is a massive game for us,” he said. "We are better prepared than at the beginning of the season.

"Watford is a team that have qualities like us but now I feel that we have learned a little bit from this game and we have better preparations.

“The mood is good but we want to translate this onto the pitch.”

Southampton have scored just 21 goals in the Premier League this season and Pellegrino says the club will look to bolster their attacking options with part of the £75m raised from the sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool.

“I think the priority is to try to help the final third because Charlie [Austin] will be out and we don’t have his profile in the squad. That is one of our priorities.”

Pellegrino also expects to have Cedric Soares, Wesley Hoedt and Jeremy Pied available for the trip to Watford.

“All of them have been training today with the team,” said Pellegrino. "They are not 100 per cent but tomorrow I think they will be part of the team in training.

“Until we decide because one thing is the medical condition and the other is the football condition. We analyse and we decide. The good news is all of them are ready.”

Mauricio Pellegrino urges Southampton fans to be patient

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has warned Southampton fans to be patient as they continue their pursuit of Theo Walcott.

Saints are keen to bring England winger Walcott back to the south coast, 12 years after he left to join Arsenal.

However, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has insisted he wants Walcott to stay while Everton are also interested in the 28-year-old.

Saints boss Pellegrino said: 'I cannot talk about players who are not here.

'We know Walcott is a very good player but now it is not my concern to talk about players not in the club.

'The fans have to be patient, everyone at the club wants people to help us to be stronger, especially as Charlie Austin is out for a long period.

'We have to be optimistic, we have a couple of targets and we are working hard in this way.

'The priority now is to try to help, especially in the final third.

‘But the market is really difficult. It’s about negotiations, we can control our side but not the other side.’

Pellegrino is also lining up a move for Atletico Madrid playmaker Nicolas Gaitan.

The Argentinian has fallen out of favour at Atletico and is understood to want a move in order to bolster his World Cup chances.

‘I know him,’ added Pellegrino. 'But I will repeat, in the market you can talk about it when the players sign the contract.

‘But I don’t believe in only 50 per cent or 60 per cent (completed). I only believe in 100 per cent.’

Pellegrino is the latest top-flight manager under pressure with his side without a win in their last nine Premier League outings.

They head to Watford on Saturday lying outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone.

‘The pressure is part of the job for every single manager, the biggest risk is to work in football,’ said Pellegrino.

‘We need results, results are everything, I am doing my best. We are not in a good moment but everyone in the squad is conscious that we need to do more.’

Match preview

Show/hide article…

Southampton have Cedric Soares (ankle) and Wesley Hoedt (head) back in training but both defenders will be assessed to see if they can return.

Striker Charlie Austin (thigh) is still injured and Jeremy Pied (knock) is doubtful.

Watford’s only home Premier League victory against Southampton came in their very first such meeting against them, 3-2 in December 1999 (D1 L1 since).

Southampton are winless in nine Premier League matches (D4 L5); only West Bromwich Albion are on a longer current such run (20).

The Hornets have won 48% of their Premier League points in home matches this season (12/25), the lowest ratio in the competition.

Nathan Redmond has scored four goals and provided one assist in his five PL appearances against Watford, netting more against the Hornets than he has any other opponent in the competition.
