Virgil Van Dijk transfer update: This club are in pole position to sign Southampton star

Show/hide article…

The Southampton star has not played since January due to an ankle injury sustained against Leicester. But that issue has not stymied interest in prising him away from St. Mary’s come the end of the season. Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton have all been linked with swoops for Van Dijk.

“Chelsea are in the driving seat to sign Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk this summer.” And Bleacher Report say Antonio Conte has emerged as the manager most likely to secure his services. They say City’s hesitancy to seal a deal until they offload top-earners has handed Chelsea an advantage. And that’s despite the fact that Etihad chiefs apparently held promising talks with Van Dijk’s representatives.

Arsenal are believed to be willing to make the 25-year-old Dutchman one of the best-paid players at the Emirates. However, Van Dijk is said to be concerned by the direction the Gunners are going in as they look set to drift out of the top four. Bleacher Report claim the former Celtic man is open to a move to Stamford Bridge and that that switch is most probable.

Oriol Romeu lands awards double

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu won Saints’ Players’ Player and Fans’ Player of the Season prizes at the end of campaign awards ceremony this evening at St Mary’s.

The Spaniard was handed the double of gongs, while Maya Yoshida was also rewarded for his fine season, as he won the President’s Choice award, which was chosen by Saints legend Terry Paine MBE.

Sofiane Boufal landed the Goal of the Season prize for his strike against Sunderland.

Jake Vokins was awarded Young Player of the Season and Phoebe Williams picked up the inaugural Player of the Season for the Girls’ Regional Talent Club.

"It has been an amazing season, I have enjoyed it a lot,” Romeu said, after landing the two awards.

"I’ve felt everyone’s support and need to thank my teammates for valuing the work I have done since I came here. I couldn’t be any happier.

“Also the fans as well because their support gives you another strength to carry on and fight for every single ball. I need to say thank you to the fans because without them sometimes it would be much harder.”

“Playing at Wembley and St Mary’s has been amazing this season,” he continued.

“It was an unreal atmosphere at Wembley and we will never forget that day. We couldn’t get the title but we took many things from that day – it was amazing.

“Also Longy’s goal at Anfield. That was one my happiest moments as a footballer – seeing him put the ball in the back of the net and then all the fans and players celebrating getting to Wembley. It was amazing.”

Double award for Romeu at Player Awards

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu was the man of the moment at Southampton Football Club’s Player Awards on Thursday evening.

The Spanish midfielder picked up both the Fans’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season following an excellent Premier League campaign.

Romeu, who joined in 2015 from Chelsea, was voted Saints’ player of the season by both the club’s supporter and his teammates on a special night at St Mary’s.

Maya Yoshida was also rewarded for his fine season, as he won the President’s Choice award, which was chosen by Terry Paine MBE.

The Japan international took on a lead role across the Saints backline in the absence of Virgil van Dijk and recently made his 100th Premier League appearance against Hull City.

Sofiane Boufal also picked up an award during his first awards ceremony with Saints, as his Sunderland strike was awarded Goal of the Season.

The Moroccan received 31% of the voting to see off Jay Rodriguez’s AFC Bournemouth strike, which got 29%.

Elsewhere, youngster Jake Vokins was awarded Young Player of the Season, following a fine season for the Under-18s and Under-23s.

Vokins, who was unable to collect the award due to being at the European Championships with England Under-17s, made huge progress throughout the year and penned his first professional contract in March.

Phoebe Williams picked up the inaugural Player of the Season for the Girls’ Regional Talent Club.

As well as being the Under-16s captain, Williams has moved to represent England Under-17s this season and made a huge impact off the field during Southampton Regional Talent Club’s first year.

Will Maya Yoshida get your vote for Player of the Season?

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida is an unexpected contender for the Daily Echo’s Southampton FC Player of the Season award.

But he certainly deserves the recognition.

This time last year, the very suggestion that, 12 months on, Yoshida would be a candidate for the player of the season would have likely drawn nothing but disbelieving laughter.

Back then the Japan international was considered a liability and was likely at his lowest ebb during his spell at St Mary’s, having committed a few costly gaffes that harmed his reputation and drained him of all confidence.

The 28-year-old wasn’t helped by Ronald Koeman’s decision to select him at right-back - a position which he clearly wasn’t equipped for.

All of that is history now, but also acts as a reminder of just how far Yoshida has come this season, especially in the second half of the campaign.

Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk were superb together at centre-back in the early part of the season but, after the former had departed for West Ham and the latter suffered a foot ligament injury, Saints had to turn to their long-serving alternative, Yoshida.

He and Jack Stephens have together performed admirably at central defence during a difficult period.

Yoshida has had to be very patient for his chance, having prominently been a back-up since his arrival in 2012, and now he’s got it he’s really proving what a top professional he is.

He’s found consistency, having had a decent run in the team, and has moved away from his previous error prone ways.

“I have been waiting for this chance for a long time,” he said. “Now I have to show everyone who I am.

“I’m showing it now, but if it’s not enough I will understand and I must keep showing a good performance until the end of the season and even more, for the next two or three years.”

He may return to his third-choice berth at some point, but he should be recognised for his efforts this term and that is why he’s a contender for the Daily Echo’s Player of the Season Award.

Austin set for Saints return in relegation showdown

Show/hide article…

CHARLIE Austin is set to make his long-awaited return to action tonight as Saints’ under-23s take on Manchester City in a crunch season finale.

The nine-goal striker, who remains Saints’ top-scorer, has been out injured since early December with a dislocated shoulder.

The 27-year-old had surgery on the problem and, following more than four months sidelined, returned to full training last week.

Saints boss Claude Puel has been monitoring his progress and targeted tonight’s game at the City Football Academy as an ideal time to give Austin some minutes.

The former QPR frontman hasn’t played since December 8, when he landed awkwardly on his right shoulder in the first half at St Mary’s during Saints’ Europa League group stage game against Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

The shoulder is same one Austin dislocated three times in 14 months while at Burnley and has previously twice had surgery on.

He headed out to America to see one of the world’s leading shoulder surgeons in December, before heading back to Staplewood to begin his rehabilitation programme.

After returning to first-team training, Austin said: “It’s been tough. I’ve had to mentally grind. I’ve not had an injury for this long before. It’s mentally tough, but I’m delighted that I see the light at the end of the tunnel now and I’m part of the first-team again.”

Austin’s potential return comes in a massive game for the under-23, who sit precariously on goal difference alone above the relegation zone in Premier League 2 Division 1 ahead of tonight’s fixture.

Martin Hunter’s side have not won any of their last six games and must match Derby County Under-23s’ result against Chelsea’s youngsters to stand a chance of avoiding the drop.

They face a second placed City who won 3-0 at Staplewood in the reverse fixture back in October.

Bertrand talks Puel ‘rift’ and Saints future

Show/hide article…

RYAN Bertrand has strongly dismissed claims of a rift in the Saints camp and addressed question marks over his future at the club by insisting he’s not thinking about a move away.

Stories were rife in the press earlier this week that St Mary’s chief Claude Puel had lost the dressing room, with Bertrand and Nathan Redmond said to have fallen out with the Frenchman.

It led to claims that left-back Bertrand was seeking a move away, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City monitoring his situation.

But the England international insists “there have been no bust-ups” and that it has “never really crossed my mind to start thinking about football elsewhere”.

“There’s nothing to make a story out of,” he said. “There have been no bust-ups.

“From the outside looking in you’d think [there was a crisis],” he continued. “There’s this news and that news, but, if you come away from that, we’re sitting 9th, we’ve been in a cup final and we can increase on where we are at the moment.

“We’ve got all to play for and come the end of the season we’ll be sitting here saying what a great season it has been.”

The 27-year-old, who signed a new five year contract last July, takes it as a compliment to be linked with a switch to one of the Premier League’s leading clubs, but stated that he’s happy and not thinking about life away from St Mary’s.

“As long as my football’s consistent and I’m enjoying it there’s no real need to start thinking about your future,” he said.

“I’m happy, my family is happy, so it’s never really crossed my mind to start thinking about football elsewhere.”

“You can take that as a compliment to be honest, but I don’t really get carried away about what’s written in the papers and that too much,” he added, referring to the speculation.

“It’s important to focus on my game and you know that will come. If you’re playing consistently well in the Premier League and internationally, you’ll naturally be linked to various teams.”

Newspaper gossip is not something that Bertrand takes notice of.

“I learnt from a young age to stop reading so much tabloid stuff and just focus on my game,” he said.

“Naturally it’s nice to get that recognition and I suppose that will come if you play consistently in the Premier League and internationally.

“But I learnt a long time ago not to get carried away with anything.”

Contrary to reports of unrest in the Saints camp with Puel’s management of the team, Bertrand couldn’t have been more supportive of his under pressure boss.

The former Chelsea man believes Puel has had to manage huge expectations after Saints’ record breaking 6th place finish last term under his predecessor Ronald Koeman.

“It’s been a full on season and it’s hard to come to your first job in English football, to follow what we’ve done last year and to cope with the demands of all the games,” he said. “But I think he [Puel] has come in and done really well.

“If you step back and look at it, we’ve been in a cup final, were on the edge of history there, and we’re still in contention to finish in a respectable position in the Premier League.

“I guess those frustrations come when you have a bad result against a team you’re expected to beat and that comes with the success we’ve had – the expectation to go out and continuously deliver.

“So when that doesn’t come it’s natural for the fans to be a bit upset.”
