Arsenal set to sell Theo Walcott: Southampton look to beat Everton and West Ham to signing

Show/hide article…

Theo Walcott has been limited to just two starts this season - both in the Europa League

The Gunners want to raise funds and are preparing for a January clear out at the Emirates.

Mesut Ozil is also in line to be sold with his contract expiring next summer.

And while Walcott’s current deal runs until 2019, Arsenal have no intention of extending it.

Arsene Wenger wants to reshape his side and Walcott is not in his future plans, having struggled for game time this season.

According to the Daily Express, Southampton would pay between £12m and £15m for the 28-year-old.

Saints outcasts give Pellegrino food for thought

Show/hide article…

SAINTS’ outcasts have given Mauricio Pellegrino plenty of food for thought after a friendly win over Fulham at Staplewood.

The Cottagers match was set up for those fringe players and players not on international duty to get some game time and impress the St Mary’s chief.

And it was certainly mission accomplished for two of those out in cold, with Charlie Austin and James Ward-Prowse both scoring in the 2-0 triumph.

Striker Austin has not started a single Premier League match this season, playing just an hour of league football this season so far.

But the 28-year-old gave his manager plenty to think about as he slotted in Nathan Redmond’s cut back in the win over the Championship side.

Saints’ attack has been misfiring this season, with just five goals in total and three from open play in eight games in all competitions.

So it would have been a real plus for Austin to show the Argentine, who was celebrating his 46th birthday by watching his side in this behind-closed-doors match, what he can do.

The former QPR man, who netted a last-minute penalty against West Ham in August but has been restricted to just one start in the Carabao Cup defeat to Wolves, will now hope to get his first league start of the season a week Sunday when Saints welcome Newcastle United to St Mary’s in the Premier League.

Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini have been Pellegrino’s first picks upfront so far this campaign, but the goals have yet to start flowing.

Ward-Prowse, who has been also out in the cold after initially being a part of the starting side at the beginning of the campaign, took his chance to impress too.

The midfielder has started just two Premier League games this term, but he laid down a marker with a goal against Fulham, slotting home after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s shot was parried by goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.

Danish midfielder Hojbjerg, who Saints signed from Bayern Munich for around £12.8m last summer, himself hasn’t been involved at all for Saints this term but would have hoped to catch his manager’s eye in an attempt to force his way into contention.

That seems unlikely at this stage with Mario Lemina and Oriol Romeu very much first choice in the holding midfield department.

Pellegrino will also have run the rule over academy graduates Matt Targett and Sam McQueen as well as forgotten central defender Florin Gardos, who all started this game against the Cottagers.

Meanwhile, an undoubtedly frustrated Jack Stephens will have liked to remind his boss that he is still very much in the first team picture at centre-back, after losing his place following Wesley Hoedt’s arrival and Virgil van Dijk’s comeback.

Stephens was first pick next to Maya Yoshida at the start of the campaign, but has slipped down the pecking order to make way for £15m signing from Lazio Hoedt and Van Dijk, who came back to the fold after his transfer stand-off.

He played the full match at Staplewood.

Saints quartet set for international action

Show/hide article…

Already guaranteed a place in the World Cup finals, Maya Yoshida’s Japan host New Zealand in a friendly at the Toyota Stadium this morning (11.20am BST).

Four Asian nations have already booked a place, with Iran, South Korea and Saudi Arabia all joining Japan on the bill of the 21st edition of the tournament next summer.

Dušan Tadić is also set for international action (7.45pm BST), as Serbia lead the way in Group D. They will secure automatic qualification with a victory away to Austria tonight, or have the buffer of a home tie with Georgia on Monday to gain the necessary points.

Striker Shane Long is set to play at the Aviva Stadium (7.45pm BST), where the Republic of Ireland can keep their play-off hopes alive by defeating Moldova, ahead of a big home game against Wales.

Manolo Gabbiadini also features in tonight’s schedule, as Italy host FYR Macedonia at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino (7.45pm BST).

Italy will be favourites for the win, having already secured at least a play-off place, but trail Spain by three points heading into the final two qualifiers.

Arsenal’s Theo Walcott wanted by Southampton

Show/hide article…

Theo Walcott could become the next high-profile star out of the door at Arsenal, with Southampton keen on a reunion with their former youth product in January.

The 28-year-old is yet to start a Premier League fixture for Arsene Wenger’s side this season, and has had to settle for action in the Europa League and League Cup.

And his struggles for first-team action this campaign could see him leave the north London outfit alongside fellow stars Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

With just 18 months left on his current £110,000-a-week deal at the Emirates, the Daily Express report that Arsenal have no plans to extend his contract.

That news has alerted Southampton, who sold the England forward to the Gunners in 2006 as a £10million teenager — and are understood to be willing to pay around £12-15m when the transfer window reopens.

The Saints have struggled for goals under Mauricio Pellegrino, managing just five goals in their opening seven Premier League fixtures.

And Walcott — who became the youngest player to play for Saints when he made his debut, aged just 16 years and 143 days, in 2005 — would provide much-needed firepower.

However the St Mary’s outfit face competition, with Inter Milan keen while fellow top-flight clubs Everton and West Ham are understood to have shown an interest.
