Martina future under threat

Show/hide article…

Cuco Martina is facing an uncertain future with his contract set to expire in the summer.

The Curacao international right back has yet to be offered a new deal by Saints and may find himself surplus to requirements this summer.

Saints could have a big decision to make in the right back department with increasing noises from Spain suggesting that Barcelona may table an offer in the region of £25m for Cedric Soares.

The Portuguese Euro 2016 winner is the undisputed first choice right back at St Mary’s.

Saints managed to convince Cedric to pen a new deal with the club until 2020, which protects his value, but they may struggle to hold onto him in the face of interest from the world’s most glamorous club.

The good news for Saints is that Jeremy Pied will be available again for next season.

The French defender is a trusted foot soldier of Claude Puel, but his first season at the club has been wrecked by an ACL injury which has ruled him out for the entire campaign.

Pied is building up steadily now ready to hit the ground running in pre-season and make a full first team comeback in August.

With no European football on the cards next season, Saints have no real need to have three right backs. Therefore, if Cedric stayed with Pied as his deputy then Martina is likely to be surplus to requirements.

Puel was willing to sell Martina to Everton last summer, but had to pull the plug on the deal at the last minute with Pied injured and no other options readily available in the transfer market.

However, he is highly unlikely to produce a repeat performance this summer.

Even if Cedric were to go then chances are Puel will still release Martina and search for another option in the transfer market.

Martina has been completely out of the picture at Saints since the fixture congestion has died down.

His only games in 2017 have been in the FA Cup ties against Norwich and Arsenal.

In total he has started just six Premier League games this season with a further three sub appearances.

His best run came in the Europa League. With Puel keen on rotation and protecting Cedric for top flight fixtures, Martina started the first five group games.

Which Prem team has the best chances of making the top 4? Bad news for Arsenal and Man Utd

WHICH Premier League team has the best chances of finishing in the top 4 and making it to the Champions League next season?

CHECK OUT OUR GALLERY ABOVE FOR MORE

According to the Sky Sports Premier Predictor, Arsenal and Manchester United could miss out on the Champions League qualifying spots.

That means the Gunners will probably not finish in the top four for the first time under Arsene Wenger.

Chelsea look to be on course of winning the title and their chances of making it to Europe’s biggest competition next season are greater than 99 per cent.

Starsport only concentrate on the teams who are ranked in the top 10 spots of the table.

Gabbiadini surprised by fast start to Premier League life

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini has admitted he has been stunned by his start at Southampton after escaping Napoli in January.

The Italian striker has hit six goals in his first four games for Southampton after a finding his opportunities limited at the Stadio San Paolo prior to his January transfer.

He has been highly praised for his first few appearances in England, especially after his brace in the EFL Cup final against Manchester United, but Gabbiadini did not expect to acclimatize so rapidly.

‘I’ll be honest, even I didn’t expect a start like this,’ Gabbiadini told Sky Sport Italia. 'I am in a completely different style of football and everything is different here, from the city to my team-mates. I didn’t think this would happen.

‘I have to thank all my team-mates and the coach, who have been extraordinary and really helped me. The important thing is to give my all to make the fans happy.’

Even though Gabbiadini only made 13 appearances for Napoli this season, the majority of them came out of position.

And the £17million-man admitted he was left feeling low after a lack of game-time in Italy.

‘I could not carry on like that,’ he said. 'I finished games and came home and felt really sad, because I didn’t feel that I was involved, it was a bad feeling.

‘When I left, I told myself that I had to start over and I had to prove to myself that I was still capable of playing. Waiting six months would have been really hard.’

Southampton’s next game sees them travel to Tottenham Hotspur on March 19.

Yoshida: We must keep the focus

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida says Southampton must continue to display the sort of attitude they did against Watford as they move forward this season.

Saints responded to their EFL Cup final heartbreak in impressive fashion when they travelled to Vicarage Road last weekend, winning a thriller, 4-3.

While he was disappointed with the number of goals they conceded, Yoshida was proud of the spirit and character that the players produced.

“It was a really important game for us,” he said. "We showed a good reaction. It wasn’t the best performance from us, but we fought for our lives and we fought to win.

"I was very happy to get the three points, but still we have very important games coming, especially in April we have many games.

"So we just have to be focused on the game against Spurs, then we go into the international break and come back with a good mentality and be ready physically and mentally.

“We are enjoying it, but we still need to improve a lot. We have to stop conceding goals now.”

Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini wins PFA Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month

Show/hide article…

Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini has won the PFA Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month award for February.

Over 40,000 votes were cast in the poll, which was held on the Sky Sports website and apps, with Gabbiadini claiming victory with 16,226 votes, beating Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

Kane, who scored four league goals in February, came second with 11,665 votes, while Lukaku was third with 5,081 votes.

Rounding off the top six were Manchester United forward Henrikh Mkhitaryan (4,873), Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus (1,876) and West Brom defender Gareth McAuley (1,237).

The six candidates were chosen by our expert panel, which included Sky Sports pundits Peter Beagrie and Paul Merson, Mike Riley - general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials, and Malcolm Clarke - chairman of the Football Supporters’ Federation.

And it is Gabbiadini, who has come out on top thanks to your votes, which have been verified by an independent party.

The Italian moved to St Mary’s in January for £14.5m from Napoli and has hit the ground running, scoring four goals in his first three Premier League matches.

He has played four matches in all competitions for Southampton and scored six goals, including a double as Southampton lost 3-2 to Manchester United in the EFL Cup final last month.

The 25-year-old has also scored in each of his last seven successive matches for Napoli and Southampton.
