The squad player from each Premier League club ready to break into the first XI
Show/hide article…
We are now almost a third of the way through the 2017/18 Premier League season and managers are beginning to look towards the winter transfer window.
Those who failed to secure all of their summer targets will be hoping to make further moves in the new year.
But should top flight coaches be looking to their fringe players before spending money in January?
Why shell out tens of millions of pounds on players when the man you need could be waiting on the fringes of the first team?
Here, Mirror Football picks one player from each team that is ready to prove a point and break into the first XI.
The midfielder has worked his way back into the Arsenal fold but is yet to start a Premier League game this season.
He has impressed in Arsenal’s Europa League campaign and can’t be too far away.
Wilshere will be hopeful of being in Arsene Wenger’s first XI before the end of the season.
Fraser started four of Bournemouth’s first five matches after an impressive end to last season.
He has only played three minutes since then though after losing his place to Jordon Ibe.
It appears it will only be one of the two young wingers but the Scot will hope to get another crack under Eddie Howe.
The Chelsea loanee would have hoped for some more game time on the south coast.
He was excellent at Huddersfield last term but has struggled for starts under Chris Hughton.
Brown hasn’t been helped by Pascal Gross’ excellent form but still has plenty to offer if called upon.
Barnes has been at Turf Moor since 2014 but has dropped down to third-choice this term.
Burnley splashed the cash on Chris Wood during the summer with the former Leeds striker making a real difference.
Barnes did make a difference off the bench at Southampton, along with Sam Vokes who headed the winner.
It appears most of his opportunities will be in a similar capacity.
The midfielder was a surprise mover in the summer as he left Leicester for Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea splashed around £35m on Drinkwater - but he was always going to be on the fringes.
But the sale of Nemanja Matic could lead to him getting more opportunities.
Neither Tiemoue Bakayoko or Cesc Fabregas appear to have the discipline to play in the two alongside N’Golo Kante.
Drinkwater didn’t do bad alongside him at Leicester…
It remains to be seen if the former West Ham defender can work his way into Roy Hodgson’s first-choice defence.
Tomkins was involved against his former club a few weeks ago - before being dropped for the defeat to Spurs.
Hodgson is still searching for his best side so Tomkins shouldn’t be too worried yet.
Everton splashed the cash to bring in Lookman in January and he enjoyed a dream start, scoring on his debut against Manchester City.
He has struggled since though with Ronald Koeman continuing to overlook him.
Lookman was thrown on against Watford last weekend and played a key role in the dramatic turnaround, setting up Oumar Niasse.
Everton’s side is crying out for some pace and ingenuity and Lookman can provide just that.
Williams signed a two-year deal with Huddersfield in July after rejecting Reading’s offer of an extension.
But the German-American midfielder has struggled to establish himself in David Wagner’s side.
The 28-year-old was a key figure as Reading battled their way to the Championship play-off final and could yet play an important role for the Terriers as they scrap for survival this season.
Neither Claudio Ranieri nor Craig Shakespeare managed to get the best out of Slimani — who cost £29million —during their time in charge, but will Claude Puel have more luck?
The Tunisian is physically suited to the Premier League and has shown, both with Sporting and internationally, that he can score plenty of goals. Unlocking that goal scorer could be crucial to Leicester’s season.
Slimani scored 32 goals in 44 appearances the campaign before he joined the Foxes, even two thirds of that total would be invaluable.
Alberto Moreno has regained his place both at Liverpool and with Spain this season after earning Jurgen Klopp’s trust, but have the flaws from his game actually disappeared?
Understandably, Klopp has not wanted to throw Robertson straight into the staring XI considering he is still relatively inexperienced.
But should Moreno’s form take a turn for the worse, Liverpool now have a left-back with the ability to step in.
Injuries have hampered his career and even he admits he will likely never be the same player again.
But Gubndogan remains a world class midfielder who can anchor an attacking midfield.
If Pep Guardiola can keep ther German fit there is no reason why he cannot make a name for himself as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders.
Shaw’s relationship with Jose Mourinho, frosty before this season, looks close to breaking point. But with Mourinho, relationships are rarely beyond repair and he uses this tactic to get the best out of his squad.
If Shaw is capable of rising to the challenge there is no doubt he could establish himself as United’s first choice left-back.
A 19, Shaw had England’s best teams competing for his signature and he showed glimpses of his Southampton form under Louis van Gaal.
In there, somewhere, there is a brilliant attacking full-back waiting to be brought out.
Not many wingers hit double figures for their clubs but that is exactly what Murphy did for Norwich last season.
He contributed 10 goals playing out wide while also finding the net for the England U21s.
If Newcastle are to re-establish themselves as a top flight club they will need to find goals from all voer the pitch, not just their strikers.
Murphy is an untapped resource for Rafa Benitez.
Austin’s first season in the Premier League saw him net 18 goals in a terrible QPR team. The following campaign he scored 11 in 23 during an injury-hit period of his career.
Since then, Austin has struggled for form but he is a proven goal scorer at this level.
Mauricio Pellegrino must help the 28-year-old rediscover his confidence.
Stoke are averaging just over a goal a game in the Premier League this season and have a goal difference of -9.
At 31, Adam may not be the midfielder he was at Blackpool but his long passing is still brilliant, as is his delivery from set pieces.
Mark Hughes has worked hard to change Stoke’s image in recent years but perhaps it is time he took things back to basics and utilised Adam’s particular talents.
Bony’s demise has been nothing short of remarkable in recent years.
Signed by Manchester City for £28million just two years ago, he now finds himself unable to get into Swansea’s team on a regular basis.
But underneath the poor and often immobile performances lies not only a goal scorer but a forward that Paul Clement can build his team around.
The left-back was a stand-out performer for Mauricio Pochettino last season — but now cannot get into the team after revealing his desire to leave.
But if Pochettino can get Rose to focus, perhaps with the promise of a summer move, he can once again prove a huge asset.
Okaka made his name at Anderlecht, hitting 17 goals for them, including one against Spurs, in 2015/16.
But the 28-year-old, who should now be in his prime, is struggling for game time under Marco Silva.
His two appearances this season have yielded one goal, perhaps it is time to let him reproduce that ratio in a greater number of matches.
When RB Leipzig signed Burke from Nottingham Forest he was billed as one of the best young talents in British football.
He scored on his debut but ultimately struggled to live up to his billing and was sold just one year later.
Burke is now back in England but devoid of confidence, can Tony Pulis bring the best out of him?
Sakho’s botched move away from West Ham during the summer won’t have done much for his confidence but the change in management could signal a fresh start for the striker.
The Senegal forward has been out of favour since the beginning of last season but he has also shown glimpses of real form during his time at the club.
He will have to work a lot harder under David Moyes than he did under Slaven Bilic, but he should be approaching the prime of his career and still has a lot to offer this team - although he definitely doesn’t hide the fact that he wants to leave.
