READER LETTER: Saints, enough is enough - go and get Sam Allardyce

Show/hide article…

ENOUGH is enough. Saints are going backwards – and what’s worse it’s with a very capable group of players.

You published my previous letter regarding Saints three weeks ago in which I gave Pellegrino the benefit of the doubt. I said Forster was a liability, Tadic hides and the tactics were inexplicable.

After more dismal performances (despite having a season ticket I would be less depressed by not going at all) I now dread going to home games.

This is a situation which should worry the board – I suspect I am not alone in thinking something has to give. We now face a substantial uphill climb after taking five points from 12 against lesser teams and scoring just six goals in seven games (not to mention the hideous no-scoring run we had to endure in the latter months of last season).

Les Reed and the board now need to take action. Pellegrino is clueless. His selections range from blind faith (Tadic, Forster, Redmond) through panic (Boufal, Holjberg, Hoedt, Yoshida) and finally to the bizarre (JWP on with three minutes remaining – or just maybe he noticed we had won a corner and had screwed up every other one).

Pellegrino has wasted an easy start. Now it gets harder and I have no idea where the next goal is coming from.

Conversely, however, I also feel that every time the opposition gets one on target it will go in. I never thought to hear myself say this but go and get Sam Allardyce before it’s too late. At least he will steady the ship because, make no mistake, we are heading for the bottom three, with our only hope that there will be three teams worse than us at the end of the season.

If not, Les, please can I have a refund on the grounds of failure to provide any value for money or even faulty goods?

Austin’s message to Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

CHARLIE Austin sent a three-goal message to Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino by netting a hat-trick in a 5-1 win over Championship side Fulham in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Staplewood.

The 28-year-old striker, who was the club’s nine-goal top-scorer last season, has played just 103 minutes of Premier League football this season and has mainly been used as a late substitute by Pellegrino.

Austin’s longest run-out so far this season came against Burnley when he played 25 minutes in the 1-0 defeat at St Mary’s last weekend.

Pellegrino has often looked to him as an impact player but he has struggled to make his mark in those cameo outings.

The former QPR man’s only start came in a 2-0 defeat to Wolves in the League Cup and has been really only a bit-part player despite Saints often struggling for goals.

Manolo Gabbiadini is viewed as Saints’ first choice striker so far, while Shane Long, who hasn’t scored in 27 games now, has often been preferred to Austin too.

That has left the ex-Burnley man on the periphery.

However, Austin, who also scored against the Cottagers in a friendly in the last international break, has once again given Pellegrino some food for fought over his attacking selections.

The frontman hit in a poachers finish to make it 2-0 after Oriol Romeu opened the scoring for a very-strong Saints XI in the first minute, before making it 3-0 from the penalty spot before the half hour mark.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, another forgotten man in the Saints ranks, made it 4-0 just before half time, hitting home from Matt Targett’s cross.

Austin completed his treble with a superb glancing header soon in to the second period.

That will be very encouraging for Pellegrino, having watched on frustrated as his strikers failed to find form in the Premier League this season.

Gabbiadini is Saints’ top-scorer on three goals so far this term, while Steven Davis has netted twice. Austin has struck once, hitting a last minute penalty in the 3-2 win over West Ham in August.

It will now be fascinating to see if Austin’s goals in this friendly will allow him to get a run of games.

Certainly, he has proved a very competent Premier League marksman in the past, scoring 18 goals for a struggling QPR side in 2014/15.

He missed much of last season with a dislocated shoulder injury and is clearly needing a run of games this term to find match sharpness.

Brazil too much for Yoshida’s Japan

Show/hide article…

In a rampant performance, Tite’s side ended the game as a contest in just over half an hour. PSG forward Neymar had already scored one penalty and seen another saved another before Marcelo’s thumping drive put them 2-0 up on 17 minutes.

Saints’ Yoshida curled a free-kick onto the crossbar from 25 yards via a slight deflection off the head for Fernandinho only for Gabrlel Jesus to add a third shortly afterwards, rounding off an excellent team move from close range.

Tomoaki Makino’s header gave the Samurai Blue hope on the hour mark but that was as good as it got for Yoshida and co. at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Virgil van Dijk: Kieran Tierney should stay at Celtic for now

Virgil van Dijk: Kieran Tierney should stay at Celtic for now

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk says former Celtic team-mate Kieran Tierney should be in no rush to leave the Hoops as his impressive progress continues.

Tierney, 20, reached another milestone in his fledgling career when he donned the Scotland armband in a 1-0 friendly defeat against Van Dijk’s Netherlands on Thursday night.

The young defender has also captained Scottish champions Celtic and is closing in on a 100th first-team appearance for his boyhood heroes after signing a new long-term contract last week.

Van Dijk was playing when Tierney came on for his debut at Dens Park in April 2015 and has watched his former team-mate’s career take off since then.

“He’s been doing very well and I think Celtic are very smart to tie him down for the next six years,” the Dutchman said. "It’s good to see him as the captain as well.

“I can remember that day he made his debut at Dundee. Since then he has been progressing every game.”

Van Dijk refused to speculate on how far the left-back, who impressed in central defence against the Netherlands, can go in the game.

“That’s not up to me but it’s good to see he’s making progress,” he said. "He was the captain of his country and that’s very special at 20-years-old.

“I don’t even know if he wants to go to the Premier League. Celtic is an amazing club for him as well and I don’t think there is any rush for him to leave.”

Tierney has been a key part of Celtic’s record 63-match unbeaten run in domestic football and Van Dijk believes their achievement has been underrated by some pundits.

On Celtic’s run, he said: "It’s amazing and I don’t think people really understand how big an achievement it is. They should get all the credit for it because it’s not something that happens a lot.

“I’m happy for the club and the fans, and also for the players of course. It doesn’t matter if it’s Scotland or anywhere else, it’s an amazing achievement and people don’t really understand how big it is.”
