Saints players help to sell Big Issue

Show/hide article…

The two organisations have joined forces to provide new opportunities for Big Issue vendors at the heart of their local community.

The four Saints stars took up a different kind of pitch in Winchester city centre, trying their hand at selling the special edition of the award-winning weekly entertainment and current affairs magazine alongside local Big Issue vendors.

The special edition of The Big Issue is being sold by vendors for £2.50 across Southampton and the surrounding area, including Portswood, Lordshill, Bitterne, Ringwood, Lymington, Eastleigh, Romsey, Winchester, Salisbury and Isle of Wight (Newport, Ryde and Cowes) and is also being distributed as the official matchday programme at the club’s first game of the season, against Swansea City, on Saturday. For those who live outside of this area, it is also available to buy from The Big Issue online shop.

As part of the initiative, Big Issue vendors, in collaboration with The Big Issue Foundation, will also be provided with the opportunity to enroll in an eight-week employability programme, run by Saints Foundation, which will equip them with job-ready skills and offer work placements across the club. Upon completion of the course, vendors will then be able to apply for long-term appointments with Southampton Football Club.

Saints midfielder and England International Nathan Redmond said: “I could see how hard these guys have to work – they’re out in all weather. It’s not easy and I have huge respect for them. It was great to meet the guys and be involved in a partnership where two great organisations like Southampton FC and the Big Issue can achieve so much together.”

Greg Baker, Head of Saints Foundation and Community Partnerships at Southampton Football Club, said: “We’re incredibly proud to partner with The Big Issue. The launch of a special-edition magazine, which is on sale throughout the week and at Southampton’s Premier League match against Swansea City, marks just the start of our relationship, which will also see existing vendors undertake an employability programme, delivered by Saints Foundation, with the end goal of them gaining suitable and long-term employment at Southampton FC.”

Big Issue vendor Lee Barnes said: “It’s been amazing to meet the players, and the day has been full of lots of handshakes and smiles. I have never sold as many Big Issues in such a short period of time. It’s been absolutely class.

“What we’ve done today has brought a lot of focus to the Big Issue and hopefully that focus will carry on throughout the partnership. I am excited to be selling at matchday this Saturday and, having met some of the players, it means even more to me now.’’

Fellow Big Issue vendor Mark Morgan said: “I enjoyed it today. It was nerve-wracking, but I’m glad I did it. The players made me feel at ease and that was a big part of it for me.

“The public loved it and explaining to them what it all means, about the partnership… it seemed to come across well. I’m looking forward to matchday. It’s going to be a one-off experience, something I have never done before.”

Kev Collick, who is a local vendor in the area, said: “It’s been amazing. It’s been great to have professional football players come and join us selling today.

“A lot of people don’t realise what we need to do to sell copies and it’s been great to open people’s eyes to what it takes and to raise awareness of the Big Issue in the local area.”

EFL Cup second round draw: Southampton to host Wolves

Show/hide article…

Last season’s losing finalists Southampton will host Championship club Wolves in the EFL Cup second round after Thursday’s confusing live draw.

League One side Blackburn host Premier League rivals Burnley in a Lancashire derby, with the draw regionalised.

Newcastle will host Nottingham Forest, with Bournemouth away to Birmingham, among six ties with Premier League sides facing Championship opposition.

The draw initially left several sides unsure whether they were home or away.

The second-round ties will be played in the week commencing Monday, 21 August.

The seven Premier League teams involved in European competition will enter at round three.

Amid confusion during the live broadcast, four second-round matches were announced with the incorrect team away from home.

The ties involving seeded sides Brentford, Crystal Palace, Watford and Norwich City were initially read out with the seeded team at the opposite venue.

Further compounding matters, the television hosts appeared to forget that West Ham and Newport County were guaranteed away games, owing to being unable to play at their home grounds.

The Hammers - whose London Stadium home is being used for the World Athletics Championships - will visit League Two team Cheltenham, while Newport - whose pitch is being relaid - travel to Leeds.

Confusion also reigned in the first-round draw in June, which was streamed live from Bangkok, as Charlton were drawn against two clubs, while AFC Wimbledon were also wrongly recorded as being at home to Swindon in that round.

*These ties were initially announced with the other team at home

**West Ham and Newport County could not be drawn at home, as per a pre-draw agreement

Carabao Cup second-round draw sees Leicester face Sheffield United

Show/hide article…

Sheffield United will face Leicester and Blackburn will host local rivals Burnley in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Sunderland beat Bury 1-0 at Gigg Lane to become the penultimate team to secure their place in the draw, which took place on Sky Sports News and was made by John Salako and Alex McLeish.

Grimsby and Derby County will have to meet again to decide who travels to Barnsley in the second round after their original tie was abandoned on Tuesday because of waterlogging.

West Ham will face Cheltenham in the second round, with the League Two side hosting that game despite being drawn away - the London Stadium will not be ready for football in time.

Similarly, the newly-laid pitch at Rodney Parade means Newport County will play their ‘home’ tie against Leeds United at Elland Road.

Elsewhere the draw saw a couple of tasty derbies come out of the hat - Blackburn Rovers will host fierce rivals Burnley while QPR and Brentford meet in a west London derby.

Martin Keown’s guide to every club ahead of the 2017-18 Premier League

Show/hide article…

It’s been three months since Chelsea lifted the Premier League title for a fifth time, securing the triumph in Antonio Conte’s debut season in England.

And now we’re just hours away from the 2017-18 curtain-raiser, with a number of teams aiming to challenge the champions this season.

Both Manchester clubs have spent big this summer while Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham will all look to end their long wait for the top-flight trophy.

At the other end, new boys Brighton, Huddersfield and Newcastle will hope to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Ahead of the new Premier League season, Sportsmail’s Martin Keown breaks down every club in the top flight.

From title hopefuls to relegation candidates, the three-time Premier League winner runs you through all you need to know about the runners and riders.

Jamie Redknapp’s 10 Premier League players to watch

Show/hide article…

Every year I select my 10 players to follow for the Premier League season.

I try not to go for all the obvious players and my picks aren’t necessarily the best, either. They are the players to look out for to see if they can make a big impact.

In my 10 last season I included Leroy Sane at Manchester City and Liverpool’s Sadio Mane — who were both simply sensational to watch — and a few who were notable for how they disappointed!

This year I’ve gone for a mixture of big-name signings, exciting prospects and players with a point to prove. Have a look at my list, then use the comments below to reveal yours.

As a player who suffered several injuries I know how frustrating the last few years have been for Vincent Kompany. He will have had those dark days when you doubt whether you will play again.

Kompany will restore steel to a defence that was unsettled for large parts of last season.

John Stones will thrive playing alongside him and his presence will help new goalkeeper Ederson settle in. If Kompany can remain fit for 85 per cent of the season, City will win the league.

This will be a massive year for Van Dijk. He is the heir to Vincent Kompany as the Premier League’s best centre back and the time is right for him to leave Southampton.

Chelsea and Liverpool are in the hunt for him and while I think he’ll choose Anfield, I can’t wait to see where he goes.

If Liverpool do sign him and manage to keep hold of Philippe Coutinho, Jurgen Klopp’s side would have a great chance of winning the title.

It shows what a nuisance Diego Costa must have been for Antonio Conte to want rid of him but I still think freezing out Chelsea’s top scorer is a massive gamble.

Morata scored 15 La Liga goals in 14 starts for Real Madrid last season but will be under enormous pressure. If he does not succeed, it will be Conte’s reputation on the line.

This move has largely flown under the radar but it could turn out to be one of the signings of the summer.

Artur Boruc is a good shot stopper but was far too susceptible to errors last season. Eddie Howe’s side gave away too many goals and this goalkeeper is exactly what they needed.

The signings of Begovic, Nathan Ake and Jermain Defoe take Bournemouth’s squad to another level — and is yet another sign of just how far this club has come in recent years.

There has been a lot of talk about Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic leaving but in the long term, Solanke’s departure could be the one Chelsea regret the most.

When I first met him two years ago he told me he models his game on Costa. He wants to be an aggressive centre forward and will be licking his lips at the chances Liverpool will create for him.

He may not start many games early on, but as the season progresses he will have a big part to play. Don’t rule out an England call-up.

Thierry Henry has been hailing fellow Frenchman Lacazette for a while now and it’s easy to see why. The striker has scored 91 goals in just 129 games for Lyon in the last three seasons.

He gives Arsenal another attacking dimension and if Alexis Sanchez stays at the club this summer, those two can wreak havoc on the Premier League defences.

My pick of the players coming up from the Championship. Knockaert is a powerhouse whose style is similar to Eden Hazard when he gets on the ball.

He won’t see as much of the ball as he did in the Championship and will have fewer chances to shine but will thrive against the better teams in the top flight.

I’m delighted he has chosen to stay in the Premier League — but the pressure is on him to succeed.

After spending large parts of last season on the bench, Rooney will have to deliver every week — particularly in filling the void left by Romelu Lukaku.

If he can remain fit and sharp, Rooney can write another exciting chapter of a great career.

I’m a big fan of this boy. For most of his West Ham career Lanzini was in the shadow of Dimitri Payet and only performed in fits and starts.

He started to come into his own when Payet left under a cloud in January and was sensational in the victory over Tottenham in May.

Now, Lanzini’s challenge is to establish himself as West Ham’s creator in chief.

With this battering ram up front, United will be very direct this year. Jose Mourinho will be looking to Lukaku to be his Didier Drogba.

There are times when the Belgian plays like a raging bull — but has appeared timid and disinterested at times.

Now he must ditch his reputation as a flat-track bully and terrorise every centre back in the League.

Lukaku is good friends with Paul Pogba and if they replicate that relationship on the pitch, they can be magnificent.

Southampton Premier League season 17-18 preview: Martin Keown’s guide

Show/hide article…

The Premier League season is now just hours away, and it is time to look ahead to how the 20 teams will all get on.

Sportsmail has recruited columnist Martin Keown to run through reasons to be cheerful and fearful, as well as the key player and major signings.

Here is the lowdown on Southampton…

Mauricio Pellegrino - The 45-year-old Argentine played most of his career as a centre back at Valencia before a brief spell at Liverpool in 2005. He worked as a coach under Rafa Benitez at Anfield and spent last season at Alaves, who he led to the Copa del Rey final.

After his cup exploits with Alaves, Pellegrino will be keen to take Southampton to another final following their trip to Wembley in the League Cup. Southampton failed to score in each of their last five home games and Pellegrino is looking for a more attacking approach with Manolo Gabbiadini and Charlie Austin playing together up front in pre-season.

Southampton took a huge gamble in getting rid of Claude Puel after he led the club to a League Cup final they were unlucky to lose to Manchester United. Their recruitment could have been better — though two-time Serie A winner Mario Lemina will improve their midfield — and it looks like they will have to contend with the departure of Virgil van Dijk.

Manolo Gabbiadini - If I was playing against Southampton, he is the player I’d be watching most keenly. The 25-year-old’s movement in the box is sublime — as he showed in the League Cup final, where he scored twice.

WHERE WILL THEY FINISH THIS SEASON?

Their players are good enough to keep them in the Premier League but I don’t expect them to improve upon last season’s eighth-placed finish.
