Liverpool and Southampton open negotiations over Van Dijk deal, claims lawyer

Show/hide article…

A former football lawyer claimed Liverpool and Southampton have opened negotiations over a deal for Virgil van Dijk… before deactivating his Twitter account.

The Reds almost signed the Dutchman earlier this summer but were forced to abort their attempt after Saints complained about ‘tapping up’, report the Liverpool Echo.

Liverpool were forced to offer a hasty apology to Southampton following the complaint before the Premier League ruled they would be taking the matter no further

France-based lawyer Daniel Vanderkamp worked alongside Liverpool during the deal to sign Christian Benteke from Aston Villa in the summer of 2015, and the South African has now claimed the Reds have held dialogue with Southampton over the transfer of their classy Dutch international.

Vanderkamp tweeted: "Got told things are moving along now with LFC and Southampton.

"I don’t know if he’s handed in a request, just that the clubs are back negotiating.

The tweets come after ex-Reds midfielder Danny Murphy claimed a deal between the two clubs was “close”.

Murphy said: “I think the van Dijk thing is close. That would be a phenomenal signing."

Jurgen Klopp was asked about the transfer after his side opened up their pre-season schedule with a 4-0 win over Tranmere at Prenton Park on Wednesday.

Klopp said: "Am I allowed to talk about this? I am not!

"Pretty much everything I could say would be a mistake. You or your colleagues wrote everything about this a few weeks ago.

“I was in Iceland by the way when somebody told me this was in the newspaper.

“Nothing happened since then, all good so far, so I can’t say anything about this."

Saints announce new Taylor contract in superb fashion

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have extended the contract of reserve goalkeeper Stuart Taylor by one year - and announced it in superb fashion.

The 36-year-old arrived at St Mary’s at the start of last season to provide back-up to Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy, signing on for a season.

He’s now been handed another term.

Vice chairman (Football) Les Reed said: “Stuart was a fantastic presence in the squad last season, and the support he offered to his fellow goalkeepers and his teammates as a whole was first-class.

“We are very pleased that he will again be part of the squad for the coming season."

Speaking about the new deal, Taylor said: "I’m obviously delighted to have signed for another year.

“It’s a great bunch of lads and a great group, and I’m looking forward to working again with a great goalkeeper coach and a great squad of goalkeepers.”

Saints delivered a video on social media to accompany Taylor’s extension. It’s worth a look.

It is a gentle poke at this summer’s trend of producing elaborate videos to announce new signings.

Southampton reach a new level with Taylor’s social media announcement

Show/hide article…

This summer has truly been the summer of the quirky, elaborate (some might say overelaborate) transfer unveilings, with clubs desperately trying to one-up their rivals while filling out their squads.

So far we’ve seen new players introduced with phone WhatsApp chats, staged English lessons, white smoke billowing from a takeaway, and even mini club shop sketches to break news of big arrivals and acquisitions.

However, Southampton may have just topped the lot by going meta with a full-on minimovie…

An exciting boat chase, a police raid, night vision scenes and a suitably intense, pumping soundtrack – just to announce that veteran reserve goalkeeper Stuart Taylor (who has made precisely zero competitive appearances for the club) has signed a new contract.

Well played, Saints. Well played indeed.

Chris covers the funny side of the game for ESPN FC in the Toe Poke blog.

Redmond valued at around £53m

Show/hide article…

NATHAN Redmond is the 55th most valuable player in Europe’s big five leagues and Virgil van Dijk is worth just over £40m, according research by the CIES Football Observatory.

The International Centre for Sports Studies research group have developed on a “scientific basis the value of professional football players”.

The algorithm which helps them calculate each player’s price tag is based on nearly 2,000 transfer deals involving a fee.

Their latest findings estimate the value of all players from the continent’s leading leagues: the Premier League, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1.

In the roster of 110 players who are worth more than 40m euros, two Saints players are listed.

Worth more than Arsenal’s new £52m record signing Alexandre Lacazette, as well as ex-Saint Toby Alderweireld and Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum, Redmond comes in at number 55.

The 23-year-old, who was bought from Norwich for around £10m last summer, now commands a value of 60.2m euros, or around £53m. That is more than Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus (56.3m euros), Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (51.1m euros) and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez (51.8m euros).

The former Birmingham City man played 37 times in the Premier League for Saints last season, scoring eight goals in all competitions and contributing one assist.

According to the Football Observatory’s algorithm, Redmond is worth more than Van Dijk, who slots in at number 85 on this list.

The 26-year-old has been calculated to be worth 46.6m euros, which Saints would certainly consider a huge undervaluation, with bids of around £60-£70m likely to get the club’s attentions for their talismanic captain.

The Dutchman has been attracting interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City this summer, but no deal has been struck to seal his exit, with Saints very keen to keep hold of the former Celtic man.

The top ten of most valuable players sees Barcelona’s Neymar top the list with a price tag of 210m euros, followed by Tottenham pair Dele Alli (155.1m) and Harry Kane (153.6m).

Lionel Messi (151.7m) comes in fourth, with Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann (150.3m), Barcelona’s Luis Suarez (140.8m ), Manchester United’s Paul Pogba (134.3m), Gonzalo Higuain of Juventus (120.2m) Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (117.2m) and Juve’s Paulo Dybala (115.3m) completing the top ten.

Pellegrino lays plans for Saints managerial debut

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino will be keen to show he’s already stamped his authority on Saints when he makes his debut as manager in a friendly against St Gallen tomorrow.

The Argentine’s main focus since taking his first training session nine days ago has been, along with the usual fitness programme that comes in pre-season, imprinting his style on the team.

Although, at these early stages, it will be very much the unfinished product, the friendly against the Swiss Super League outfit will be the first insight in to what can be expected from Pellegrino’s team next season.

The 45-year-old boss has been very keen to start building relationships in the camp and with just under a month until the beginning of the Premier League season will want to demonstrate the progress he’s so far made.

Pellegrino has been working with a young 28-man squad in Austria, where the team have been concentrating mainly on fitness and team bonding but with ball work increasingly involved in the sessions.

The opening pre-season match tomorrow (3.30pm BST), which Pellegrino is putting little impetus on the result of, more getting the shape and system right, will take place in Switzerland, in the low profile surroundings of Swiss lower league outfit FC Goldach’s Sportanlage Kellen ground.

The St Mary’s chief stated that he’s enjoyed working with a young side at the training camp, running the rule over what the academy has to offer.

It is expected that he’ll use a range of players in the friendly, as is commonplace in these preparation games.

But he’ll soon turn his attentions fully to first team players, with a number of them returning from breaks after international duties.

England Under-21s James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Redmond, Matt Targett and Jack Stephens, who were in action at the European Under-21 Championships in Poland last month, will soon return to the fold along with Cedric Soares, who was in action for Portugal at the Confederations Cup.

Saints will return to England ahead of further pre-season training on Monday, with a second friendly match booked in at Championship side Brentford a week tomorrow (July 22).

Following the Bees game, Saints head to Evian, France, for their second trip away, where they will face Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne at Stade Municipal de Chambery on July 29.

On their return to Southampton, Saints will entertain German side FC Augsburg and Spanish outfit Sevilla to round off their preparations at St Mary’s.

The Augsburg game will take place on Wednesday, August 2 (7.45pm), before Pellegrino’s men host La Liga outfit Sevilla on Saturday, August 5 (3pm).

The club’s main sponsor Virgin Media are offering a special deal for both home matches.

Tickets, which will give you entry to both matches, start from as little as £5 for Under-18s, with adults paying just £12.
