Southampton to consider bid for Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart

Show/hide article…

Southampton will consider a bid for Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart if they lose Fraser Forster this summer.

Forster is a target for Everton who also have Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford and Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel on their list.

Hart, 29, is on loan at Torino but likely to be sold for £15million this summer after falling out of favour with Pep Guardiola.

England’s No 1 insists he is happy to remain in Serie A but is also keeping his options open in summer.

Speaking at a sponsorship event in Turin earlier this week, Hart said: 'I am truly happy for this fantastic welcome. I’m very grateful to the fans for everything they are giving to me.

'I’ll take that into account. I keep everything in consideration for the future, but for now I remain concentrated on Toro and what I need to do.

‘There is nothing I don’t like about Italian football, from the fans to the coach, Serie A and the culture of Italian football. I like all of it.’

Both Hart and Forster have been included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad to face Germany and Lithuania later this month.

Can Man City rebound vs. Liverpool? Wenger under pressure at West Brom

Show/hide article…

Manchester City and Arsenal are both coming off the back of embarrassing European exits, but City’s will hurt more as they were ahead against Monaco. Pep Guardiola has to rouse the troops against Liverpool, who tend to disappoint against smaller clubs but should be perfectly comfortable against the Catalan and his style of play.

Arsene Wenger is under major pressure, so has to get the fans back on his side with a big win over West Brom, while Manchester United’s Europa League exploits might see them tired against a team who just sacked their manager, Middlesbrough.

Champions-elect Chelsea, meanwhile, can show they can do it on a wet, windy day in Stoke. Predict all the weekend scores below.

MAN CITY: City haul their Champions League hangover back to Manchester with one of their historically most difficult opponents waiting for them at the weekend. Can they maintain their encouraging domestic form – unbeaten in league and cup games since Jan. 15 – or will the most recent setback weigh heavily on the mind?

Prediction: Manchester City 3-2 Liverpool – Simon Curtis

LIVERPOOL: With both sides struggling to stay solid defensively, it’s assumed there will be plenty of goals. Liverpool’s excellent record against the better sides will be tested against a team humbled in Europe and looking for revenge. This challenge may just be a step too far for the visitors.

Prediction: Manchester City 3-2 Liverpool – Steven Kelly

WEST BROM: West Brom will be looking to get their season back on track after two consecutive losses but face a tricky fixture against Arsenal at The Hawthorns. James Morrison and Chris Brunt should return to the starting lineup and add quality in the final third that was lacking against Everton.

Prediction: West Brom 1-2 Arsenal – Matthew Evans

ARSENAL: It’s been over a month since Arsenal last won a league game but the 5-0 FA Cup win over Lincoln restored some balance; expect a good showing against an impressive West Brom side. Mesut Ozil could start and is overdue a big game.

Prediction: West Brom 1-2 Arsenal – Tom Adams

STOKE: Having played so well for a much-deserved point against Manchester City in their last match, Stoke go into their home game with Chelsea in high spirits. A returning Marko Arnautovic offers his side their best chance of getting a goal, but the Blues are unlikely to slip up and will continue their march to the title with a comfortable, if not narrow, victory.

Prediction: Stoke 0-2 Chelsea – James Whittaker

CHELSEA: Flying high, there seems to be little to stop the Chelsea train at the moment. Victor Moses is a major doubt to face his former club but the Blues should still have enough firepower to battle through. It may be tough going, but that’s exactly where the likes of Diego Costa thrive.

Prediction: Stoke 0-1 Chelsea – Phil Lythell

TOTTENHAM: Southampton may have been the last visitors to win at White Hart Lane, but that was 10 months ago and Tottenham have won their past 12 home games in all competitions, scoring 39 goals in the process while only conceding eight. Harry Kane may be absent but Spurs can get the job done without him.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-0 Southampton – John Crace

SOUTHAMPTON: Saints have been superb in each of their last three games and manager Claude Puel finally seems to have found a settled team and system. The absence of Tottenham scorer Harry Kane gives the visitors a great chance to extend their unbeaten Premier League run.

Prediction: Tottenham 1-1 Southampton – Alex Crook

MIDDLESBROUGH: It’s been six weeks since Middlesbrough last scored a Premier League goal and many wonder if they will hit the back of the net again this season. If United suffer fatigue from three games in a week, the result may be slightly kinder on the Teessiders who sacked manager Aitor Karanka.

Prediction: Middlesbrough 0-3 Manchester United-- Catherine Wilson

MAN UNITED: Tiredness could be a factor here as United have come off a Europa League fixture, but they should still have enough for lowly Boro. Without Zlatan, and with striking woes up front, goals will likely have to come from midfield – however, Jose Mourinho will show no mercy to the team that dispensed with his friend and former assistant Karanka.

Prediction: Middlesbrough 0-3 Manchester United – Scott Patterson

WEST HAM: A month ago, West Ham would have been facing relegation candidates here. Now, they are facing Champions League quarterfinalists. The Foxes have been rejuvenated, while the Hammers are limping towards the season’s end. Another home defeat wouldn’t be a major surprise, but the home crowd might just inspire a draw.

Prediction: West Ham 2-2 Leicester – Peter Thorne

LEICESTER: The Champions League is where it’s at, but the Premier League still needs attention too. Under Craig Shakespeare, things have turned around and the Foxes look something like the team of last season. An away trip won’t be easy after their midweek exploits, but things seem to be going the way of the defending champions.

Prediction: West Ham 1-2 Leicester – Ben Jacobs

EVERTON: A seemingly routine home game against Hull has been livened up by a week of speculation and furore regarding Romelu Lukaku. Any upturn or drawbacks from his comments will be keenly observed on Saturday. A sixth successive home win would lift Everton into sixth (at least until Manchester United play on Sunday).

Prediction: Everton 3-0 Hull – Luke O’Farrell

HULL CITY: The recent Lukaku situation could give Hull a glimmer of hope, but realistically the Tigers are coming up against a team in good form and would be perfectly happy to take another 2-2 draw like the one from December. Travelling to Goodison Park will be a major test and if they can avoid defeat in any way, and continue to boost their chances of escaping relegation, then it will be a success.

Prediction: Everton 2-0 Hull – Phil Buckingham

SUNDERLAND: Unless Sunderland can beat Burnley at the Stadium of Light, relegation – while mathematically far from sealed – will appear the inevitable outcome of a miserable season. In three previous encounters in cup and league play, Sunderland have lost two and drawn one against the Clarets this season. If a home win seems implausible, it is indispensable.

Prediction: Sunderland 1-0 Burnley – Colin Randall

BURNLEY: The Clarets are still awaiting their first away win of the season and they will not get a better chance than this weekend’s game against the worst team in the Premier League. Burnley have already beaten Sunderland in league and cup matches this season and the long-awaited victory on the road will surely come here.

Prediction: Sunderland 0-2 Burnley – Jamie Smith

BOURNEMOUTH: The Cherries demolished Swansea on the road last time the two sides met on Dec. 31 and with home advantage in Eddie Howe’s favour here, there surely can only be one outcome: another Bournemouth win. Josh King is on fire and it’s highly likely we’ll see his name on the score sheet again.

Prediction: Bournemouth 3-1 Swansea – Will Kent

SWANSEA: Swansea let themselves slip last Saturday in a miserable 2-1 loss to Hull. The last time the side put in a sub-par performance under Paul Clement, losing 3-1 to Chelsea, they came back stronger than ever, hammering Burnley 3-2 in a game that was far more one-sided than the scoreline suggests. Clement’s motivational skills should be enough to provide at least a point this Saturday.

Prediction: Bournemouth 1-1 Swansea – Max Hicks

CRYSTAL PALACE: Crystal Palace’s revised tactics won the Eagles an unlikely three points at West Brom, and a continuation of that performance should see Palace get the three more points they desperately need.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 3-1 Watford – Rob Sutherland

WATFORD: This is a pivotal game. A loss will see Watford sucked into the relegation mix, while a win should see safety all but secured for another season. With Roberto Pereyra and Mauro Zarate sidelined for the season and Nordin Amrabat still doubtful, creativity is where the Hornets are falling short, but a patched up back four has also failed to cope in recent weeks. A resurgent Palace are likely to cause problems and a draw would represent a decent result.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 2-2 Watford – Mike Parkin

While Chelsea look to be running away with things at the top, there’s still plenty to play for down below. Bournemouth and Swansea will face a massive game to determine who gets dragged into the relegation battle, while struggling Sunderland may feel they can kick off a revival against Burnley. There’s all to play for.

Saints stars get what they “deserve”

Show/hide article…

JAMES Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond “deserve the opportunity” to prove themselves with the England senior team after their surprise call-ups, according to manager Gareth Southgate.

The Three Lions boss knows the Saints pair very well, having managed them during his spell as England Under-21s boss.

Already well aware of their abilities, Southgate was also persuaded to pick the St Mary’s duo because of their recent form at club level.

“They are players we’ve worked with before and they are players who are in excellent form with their club,” Southgate explained.

“Both performed very well in a pressured environment of a cup final with Southampton.

“We are aiming for those guys to go to the Under-21 Euros this summer, but we didn’t want to hold them back.

“They deserve the opportunity. They’ve been performing well in our junior age groups for a long time and they are two that we wanted to introduce to a senior environment and see how they get on.”

Redmond and Ward-Prowse, who will both hope to make their debuts in the coming internationals, join St Mary’s team-mates and regular England representatives Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster in the 26-man squad.

Southgate’s side play Germany in Dortmund next Wednesday in a friendly before facing Lithuania at Wembley on Sunday 26 March in a World Cup qualifier.

Ward-Prowse and Redmond were not the only Saints men celebrating call-ups.

Academy graduate Sam McQueen was named in the under-21s side for the first time.

The Southampton-born full-back joins team-mate Jack Stephens in manager Aidy Boothroyd’s squad for games against Germany and Denmark.

McQueen and Huddersfield’s Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown have been handed maiden under-21s call-ups, while Joe Gomez, Solly March and Cauley Woodrow all return to the fold.

Boothroyd said: “Izzy did well on loan in Holland, he came back and now he’s thriving in the Championship.

“Him and Sam deserve their chance, just like Tammy Abraham deserved his chance when I picked him last year.

“As for Joe, Solly and Cauley, they are three players that have been in the squad before so it will be nice to welcome them back. They all deserve to be here.”

McQueen Tweeted: “An amazing feeling to get my first international call up. thank you to everyone for the messages and support!”

The Young Lions face back-to-back away internationals against Germany (on Friday 24 March) and Denmark (Monday 27 March) as preparations continue for this summer’s European Championship finals.

After an astonishing day of England selections, the Daily Echo has charted those Saints stars heading for potential national team debuts.

As a fresh-faced 13-year-old, having already been at Saints six years, Ward-Prowse was recorded for a club video.

Within the grainy footage, along with revealing his favourite subject at school was geography, he stated that his long-term target was to reach the England squad.

Now, nearly ten years on,Ward-Prowse has achieved his dreams by getting into the Three Lions team.

For those who have followed the midfielder closely it will come as little surprise.

Not only is the 22-year-old the longest-serving Saints player in the current squad, but he has also been England Under-21s captain for nearly a year.

Despite being still so young, Ward-Prowse has already played 160 times for Saints, having made his debut as a 16-year-old in October 2011.

He has played through England age group levels for the under 17s, 19s and 20s, but made his biggest impact under Southgate in the under-21s.

Southgate named Ward-Prowse in his first-ever England Under-21s team in August 2013, making his debut against Moldova.

Then, last year, the now England boss handed him the captaincy of the Young Lions side and further recognition came when former Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson labelled the Saints man a “big prospect”.

Alongside Saints team-mates Jack Stephens and Nathan Redmond, Ward-Prowse helped the under-21s to Toulon Tournament glory last summer, which was the first time England had won the competition since 1994.

Despite all the successes, Ward-Prowse had still yet to fully forge himself a permanent starting role at Saints - a real run in the team had never been forthcoming.

However, he has started the last three games for Saints and is showing excellent form under Claude Puel.

Those recent displays and Southgate’s already close relationship with the player has clearly persuaded the England boss to give him the nod.

The 23-year-old has had an up and down start to life at Saints, but is really hitting his stride now.

Since the Thierry Henry comparisons have died off and Redmond has started to play in a more familiar wide attacking area in the 4-2-3-1 formation, he’s started to really impress.

The Birmingham City man, who Saints bought from Norwich for £10m last summer, netted a brace in the 4-3 win at Watford last time out in the Premier League.

His movement and ball-carrying abilities are a real weapon for Saints and that is clearly something Southgate wants in his England team.

Redmond has played for England through age group levels, collecting 72 caps with the under 16s, 17s, 18s, 19s, 20s and 21s, and, like Ward-Prowse, is another of Southgate’s disciples from the under-21s.

He was part of the successful Toulon Tournament side of last summer and was voted England Under-21 player of the year for 2016, narrowly beating Saints team-mate Ward-Prowse to the crown.

McQueen started this season pondering whether or not to make another loan move to Southend United.

But that never transpired and boy how things have changed since.

Claude Puel gave him a go at left-back during a training match in pre-season and spotted something special in the academy graduate.

The Southampton-born 22-year-old then played pre-season games at left-back and was given more opportunities to hone his skills there in the under-23s.

When Ryan Bertrand and then second-choice left-back Matt Targett were sidelined through injury in October, McQueen stepped up.

He made his full Saints debut in the San Siro of all places as Puel’s side took on Inter Milan in their showpiece Europa League group stage game.

The midfield-cum-defender didn’t look out of his depth at all and continued to blossom from there.

His first Premier League start then came at Manchester City, where again he took his baptism of fire in his stride.

McQueen, who went to Mountbatten School in Romsey, has not looked back since and is a bona fide senior option at left-back.

England Under-21s boss Aidy Boothroyd has stated that he “deserves” his chance.

Premier League Fantasy Football: The top players for week 29

Show/hide article…

Arsenal kick-off week 29 of Fantasy Football when they visit West Brom on Saturday. There’s a full Premier League fixture list this weekend with key games at both ends of the table.

It’s not too late to join in on the action, and you can play monthly to win some fantastic prizes. Play for free now on iOS and Android .

Arsene Wenger will be hoping his team can regain some ground on the teams above them in the Champions League places. Once again, they will look to Alexis Sanchez to lead the way, but can he continue his goal scoring form when the Gunners meet the Baggies at the Hawthorns?

The Chilean has been overtaken at the top of the Fantasy players list by Everton’s Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker is now on 163 fantasy points - one point ahead of Alexis Sanchez.

Fantasy managers need to be aware of some key players who will be out of action this weekend. Harry Kane suffered ligament damage in the cup tie with Millwall and is expected to be out for up to six weeks. Manchester United have doubts on the fitness of both Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss United’s trip to Middlesbrough through suspension, as he is currently serving a three-match ban for his altercation with Tyrone Mings. The Bournemouth defender on the other hand, received a five-match ban and will miss the game against Swansea.

Our Fantasy Football scout looks ahead to the Premier League fixtures and picks out three top players you should consider for your team.

Marcus Rashford played well against Chelsea on Monday night and it looks like he will be restored to the starting line-up this weekend as United’s other strikers are side lined with injuries and suspensions.

The English forward is a bargain at £6.7m. He has 52 fantasy points this season, scoring three goals and recording two assists from just ten games.

Son Heung-Min was the star man for Spurs in the cup last weekend, filling in for the injured Harry Kane. The South Korean has fallen under the radar of most fantasy managers but with Kane injured it could be a good time to add him to your team.

Son is just £6.8m and has started 14 games in the league, collecting 97 points, with seven goals and six assists.

The big game of the weekend will be at the Etihad, as Manchester City look to bounce back from their Champions League exit. Liverpool are the visitors on Sunday, who won the reverse fixture at Anfield with Georgino Wijnaldum scoring the only goal.

The Dutch international is one of the first players on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet, having started 23 games in the league this season. He is a good value midfielder, scoring five goals with four assists and collecting 91 fantasy points.
